I saw Mario 64 running on a videogame rental store back in 1996 and my mind was blown away. What's great about old footage like this is stuff you can't see in screenshots and magazines. Like Mario's awful acceleration curve and super touchy turn radius that would have made this game awful if Nintendo didn't change it. lol
pretty sure the "touchy turn radius" is because of the controller and not the game, as this version of the controller apparently used a square gate rather than an octagonal gate
12:16 Sheesh, the slowdown when the submarine is on-screen is even worse in the beta demo! Also, I hadn't noticed before, but there's mines in the water next to the sub. Man, this video is chock-full of beta content! The minimap, the level select, the hilarious voice clips...

New footage, and a lot of it. This is a pretty good day for the SM64 beta community. Some things i've noticed and will point out are: -SM64 once had a minimap. Which button was used to trigger it though? My bets are on the L button. -We have much more footage of the ice level now, including where the Tall Tall Mountain slide was in the beta. -The castle's layout is mostly revealed. Door on far left leads to the ice level, the one on the far right is Dire Dire docks, the one next to DDD is Lethal Lava land, so the door next to the ice level is Whomp's Fortress, probably. -When Mario has 2 HP or less, the entire HP meter turns red, if you look hard enough. This is also the first time we've seen Mario's HP go this low in the beta, I think. -If you listen as Mario grabs a star, he says 'Yeah!', obviously in a similar voice as the rest of his beta clips. -Mario flies when shot out of a cannon, as if having a wing cap. However, there's at least one thing we have yet to see: While we finally have footage of Mario going into the doors that would lead to the backyard of Peach's castle in the final version, we don't get to see Mario actually go into the door at the end of the hallway, which is a shame. What was back there in the beta version? Will that ever be answered?
one of the platforms has a red blob on it, referenced on TCRF, at around 4:06 all throughout: mario doesn't lean in the direction he's running, which makes me think its smoother ~ 5:16 mario gets tired a lot quicker 5:36 mario doesn't do a minuscule jump upon touching a damaging fire hitbox, instead immediately starting to run from the burn 6:14 bowser's face's silhouette on death seems to be different, with more prominent cheekbones? 6:16 mario's "getting up from losing a life" animation is a bit different 7:41 mario doesn't seem to get a special "landing from high height" from snow, and instead takes fall damage
So the Cool Cool Mountain slide was originally Tall Tall Mountain's? Interesting. I also liked the Japanese people's reactions to the penguin chasing Mario there.
+darkspire 17 Actually the map select calls it Mountain. You can actually translate it in the video, watch the menu that appears after he dies in the lava land.
About to turn 41 still gamer here. I first saw this in a magazine back in September 95. I wanted this console and game so badly that I held out against the PSX (though I got one in the end as swell as my n64). It wouldn’t be until February 1997 that I got to spend a whole day playing Mario on a pre release demo at toys r us. Finally got mine at a midnight launch party March 1st 1997 with my mum dad and brother present. One of the best nights of my life! When I first saw Mario 64 I was blown away and I have never wanted a game so much since. The Nintendo 64 and it’s controller were works of art to me too! This is awesome! [Also neat seeing how confusing 3D controls were at first to people haha X3]
They actually found the cartridge someone demo’d at the E3 show at Nintendo back then when they were talking about the unveiling of the game, it’s only one particular game in existance also as well, it was a Nintendo 64 “Disk Drive” game that was a entirely completed Disk for the Nintendo 64 add-on but it was used for demoing purposes at the E3 show back in 1996, the game was label titled a bit differently also, it said Super Mario 64 Disk Edition and was the only one they ever made because the N64 DD failed to sale in Japan, so they couldn’t produce more cartridges with the budget they earned then to make more of the cartridge, the cartridge was however found being sold on eBay from someone auctioning it, the guy who got the cartridge/disk knew how to dump Nintendo 64 games on to the internet for the n64 emulators, so he dumped the game onto the internet, just look up Super Mario 64 disk edition on TH-cam or else where and there may be a download link to download the disk for your own Nintendo 64 emulator. Nintendo’s not even going to break the links to the rom either, they were happy someone found the disk and are protecting the link so that it can’t be taken down :D
Genuinely fascinating to see how far along this game was when journalists at the time were told the game was only "half-finished". This looks incredibly far along for a 'half-finished' build of the game
Wow, this is amazing! I'm sure this prototype still exists in some form deep within Nintendo's vaults, but for so long we've only had a handful of pictures and a few short little clip. Now we have some actual clear video and a good idea of what this prototype was like.
I'm pretty sure all of their games and every single compiled prototype is waiting in those vaults to be leaked. We know that prototypes of Yoshi's Island and Mario Kart SNES were leaked so I think this just goes to show how much they hold behind those doors. We all hope we get our hands on the real beta someday, of all their games. Don't understand why they're so secretive about them tho

In the video most of the instruction board is not show, but I discovered we did get a photo of it here: www.gamezero.com/team-0/articles/industry/shoshinkai_1995/nu64-1.html If you look on the bottom right you can see it, unfortunately that image is too small (sized for 1995 web viewing). I do have the original photo someplace though and I've been looking for it. As soon as I find it I will scan it at a higher resolution and I will share it with everyone.
I have a few more scraps of footage that I need to put up that are side views of the screen or partial views of the screen but I just haven't had the time to focus on editing the video for upload. I'll get around to it as soon as I can.
What's bittersweet about this footage is that even though we may never play the early beta, we now know almost exactly how it would have played (not just tiny snippets). Amazing to see this footage is in such good condition after 20+ years, wonder if there's any for other beta games
This is incredible! For years I've wanted to see more footage like this. Super Mario 64 is such an important game, to be able to see more footage of it at this stage in development is fantastic, and it's something that should be preserved.
Wow, old Cool Cool Mountain is very different to what we ended up getting. And the minimap being there is surprising. Makes me wonder if 64 DS having a map on the touch screen was influenced by this in anyway instead of purely being there to make use of the bottom screen.
8:17 On the left there is b-roll footage showing more of the early tall tall mountain slide. 8:47 You can see the early bowser hallway for a few seconds before the player triggers the trapdoor and it cuts to the next footage.
I have no other way to put it: this is literal video game history. Definitely of the coolest things that I’ve ever seen on TH-cam, and this was uploaded WAY before the Wario Apparation or L is Real 2401 became widely recognized!
Me too however my n64 doesn’t load video to screen. Power light comes on but zero signal to the scart input. I have golden eye sat in the game slot too.

It's nuts how much more different Cool Cool Mountain is compared to other levels going into the final version, yet more similar in areas than first thought.
Hold up HOLD UP. I'VE NEVER SEEN ANY OF THAT ICE LEVEL BEFORE AND ITS FREAKING HUGE. AND I THINK THATS A MAP TO THE TOP RIGHT OF THE SCREEN ON THAT LEVEL, OMG

If you look on the bottom right you can see it, unfortunately that image is too small (sized for 1995 web viewing). I do have the original photo someplace though and I've been looking for it. As soon as I find it I will scan it at a higher resolution and I will share it with everyone.
that makes sense, just maps desinged to show the public, not to represent the final game
a techdemo realy
WOW, this is amazing. What an upload!! Upload more please!!
I have a few more scraps of footage that I need to put up that are side views of the screen or partial views of the screen but I just haven't had the time to focus on editing the video for upload. I'll get around to it as soon as I can.
I'll be filled with anticipation in the meantime, this footage gives so much insight on how the previous version differed, it's nearly unbelieveable!
Have you started working on the new video by any chance? :) I'd really love to see it. No pressure though!
7:37 yoooo the stage is massive
Massively boring
@@anterax4097 it's just like the original, but bigger
Yoshi4500 No it’s missing almost everything that made it special. Glad they redesigned it
What's bittersweet about this footage is that even though we may never play the early beta, we now know almost exactly how it would have played (not just tiny snippets). Amazing to see this footage is in such good condition after 20+ years, wonder if there's any for other beta games
That solid purple controllers though...
This is incredible! For years I've wanted to see more footage like this. Super Mario 64 is such an important game, to be able to see more footage of it at this stage in development is fantastic, and it's something that should be preserved.
That control stick is huge! 3:30
Dustin Zehner i notice that too
Wow, old Cool Cool Mountain is very different to what we ended up getting. And the minimap being there is surprising. Makes me wonder if 64 DS having a map on the touch screen was influenced by this in anyway instead of purely being there to make use of the bottom screen.
I've studied the old pictures many times in C+VG. This is like being there!
Imagine seeing this in 1995 and having to wait 1-2 years... I would have gone insane
Same
Okay, how long is the mountain in Cool Cool Mountain?! O_O
I swear it looked like Mario kept going down it forever!
Exactly what I was thinking
I think they shrunk the mountain in the final game because it looks way bigger.
8:17 On the left there is b-roll footage showing more of the early tall tall mountain slide.
8:47 You can see the early bowser hallway for a few seconds before the player triggers the trapdoor and it cuts to the next footage.
4:17 finally a video where people actually play the 1995 build
The first recording was so blurry in the beginning
I have no other way to put it: this is literal video game history. Definitely of the coolest things that I’ve ever seen on TH-cam, and this was uploaded WAY before the Wario Apparation or L is Real 2401 became widely recognized!
6:49 The first slide skip ever.
That's how sm64 shortcuts was born lol
Wow what a huge difference between this version of Mario 64 and the release version. Never seen any of this before
The N64 was still in development in 95 under the project name Ultra 64. I bought it in 97 and still got it.
Me too however my n64 doesn’t load video to screen. Power light comes on but zero signal to the scart input. I have golden eye sat in the game slot too.
Wow, it was so amazing to finally find out what was in those two doors, although it was kind of disappointing but at least I found out. And apparently, they DID have Whomps in the beta version (Didn't know that). Also, I didn't know that the Tall, Tall Mountain Slide was a prototype of the Cool, Cool Mountain slide.
Its crazy how much CCM improved from 1995 to 1996. The 95 version is interesting but the 96 version is iconic and really well designed.
I..I..I just love this version its so different some games get VERY interesting beta versions because of the amount of changes i hope Dudaw sees this i just HOPE the Super maio 64 revival is VERY close to looking like this
Speaking of Dudaw, I can't believe he was right about Mario flying after he got shot out of the cannon.
This message appeared on his main page of dudaw.webs.com

I wish I could go back in time to 1995 and play it
Koji Kondo didn’t need to revise any of the music apparently, it was perfect enough as it is. I imagine he was starting to work on ocarina of time around that time
@@sporligulous slightly
although, the title theme was completely redone
I was so sad when the video ended there, I really wanted to see the courtyard.
Me too :(
6:20 for the Early Level Select if you're here from tcrf.
I came from TCRF to see the early Mario crouch.
¡Gran narrador!
I wish I saw this in person
Nice thanks for the footage :)
You're welcome, I'm glad everyone is enjoying seeing it.
Looks very likely they rework the minimap concept for Super Mario 64 DS.
Man Sm64 is coming together really well. I cain't wait for the release.
Welcome to Shoshinkai 1995.
This is the birthplace of many Nintendo Games!
7:16 -- Sounds like the voice in the background yells "Happy boner, the burrito!"
When will time travel be invented? I wanna go back to 1995 to play this beta of the game!
i wanna time travel to steal the system and bring it back
I want to pay tons of money for the Nintendo 64 dd to come out in America
never.lol

omg the minimap slid into view? this is enough to make a full blown hack with that
Dude, that man in the helter skelter of cool cool mountain is a pro, that trick is wonderfoul.
If only the SM64 Beta was leaked or something FFS! :(

@@TFREAKYYY I think promo is more interesting, Jolly Roger bay and big boos haunt are in it
10:05 THATS A MINIMAP ON THE TOP RIGHT!!
It's nuts how much more different Cool Cool Mountain is compared to other levels going into the final version, yet more similar in areas than first thought.
ものすごいワクワク感を感じる…
14:00 that level never ran at full speed, did it..
I'm shook.. I wonder if we'll ever get the chance to get a rom dump from this.
It's very unlikely, but you never know.
Dash120z very unlikely, I think even Nintendo knows that it's really sought after and any leaks would be immediately taken down
That mini map though !!
This is pretty good quality for 1995. I assume whatever camera this was being filmed with was really expensive.
It looks a decent consumer VHS camcorder, so no, it wasn't "expensive", but it wasn't that cheap either.
It was recorded on a Hi8 camera, don't remember the model.

Looking at this, I think about how this video was taken before anyone knew the amazing classic that is Ocarina of Time. Kinda blew my mind thinking of it. And that glimpse of the Zelda 3D tech demo @ 8:49. :D

Shoshinkai 1995, Nintendo 64 and Super Mario 64 Demonstrations 😀
This is gold, my friends. This 1996 game's got us more excited than any game nowadays. And it's not the game itself, but its past. Very interesting. I wish I was alive by the time this happened. Does someone know if there exists a copy of the beta flying around internet?
There is no known copy of this ROM.
4:38 yo the movement is so different
people can now use this for mario 64 research. thank you
Seems there is some lag when stepping on the submarine. I'm sure grateful they fixed that and to quote mario: Yeah!
***** That sounds totally possible. I don't know much about the development of the n64 except it was originally called ultra sixty four and the dd drive that stayed in Japan.

The mini map feature reminds me of the new map/map leaflets of each world you visit in Mario Odyssey.

Rare showing Project Dream originally in the SNES and also this...
Now what if someone finds those BETA versions? (Or Rare releasing the Project Dream SNES rom)
Oh, and I noticed somewhere on the video a voice saying Super Mario Kart R, so I wonder if someone haves any footage of it in Shoshinkai like this it would be awesome.

To be honest, the original design for Cool Cool Mountain looks dreadful. I'm really glad the final game's level is better.
