Dang! I feel your pain. I've had engine trouble at the worst time, too. Just a suggestion--a jib down haul is super easy to make, and will keep the jib pinned down to the deck, and will improve safety, as you won't have to go forward to douse it.
Duuuude. Glad you had someone watching over you. Could have gone bad. Take responsibility so someone else doesn't have to risk themselves to save you. Learn to sail with the main, set a reef, and add the jib. Learn to operate an outboard motor and troubleshoot. THEN head out. Take good care of your girl. Being captain is alot of responsibility. One of the things that makes sailing great is that it can get you killed real easy. The most thrills you can have under 10mph, I think. Wishing you the best going forward!
me mate doc and I are truly getting a good chuckle on this one. So much like us on our first sail. Doc looks stormy out there. Me: That's Where we are going lol. The funny thing is just like the two of you. Doc and I had our engine (Tohatsu) cut out on us as we approached the jetty to our slip. in the dark! It had been intermittently cutting out. Then I noticed there was a leak in the fuel line. I adjusted the line and we were back in business. just in time too.... Next day we had the jib break loose in the wind. Me: doc grab the tiller while I go secure that. Doc: What do I do? Me steer the course. all in all too much fun.
You can read all the books and watch all the videos you want, but until it happens to you, you can't learn. Congrats on getting it back in in one piece. Good on your friends for coming through in a tight spot. Did you guys discuss afterwards what you would have done if they weren't there? Would be a good exercise and a decent conversation with your group over dinner.
This is great advice and also exactly what we did. So we have a membership with Towboat U.S. which i could have radioed for also, I figured if we are in a jam again and nobody around to help we would drop anchor and then call for help!
Jib and main interact. Sailing with only one of them eliminates that interaction and and teaches poor lessons. A jib with no main does not trim like a jib with a main. And a main with no jib .... Learning the wrong lessons is counterproductive. If something had happened to your jib what would you have done then without a motor? Think wisely...think safety first.

Too bad. Sailing is much more fun when you use the main sail

Once you get your main going, practice heaving to. It's a great skill to have in your toolbox.
