Another item you might not be aware of - a few years ago there was a movement to flood this area to create a lake. It was seriously considered and debated and subsequently scrubbed. Several businesses decided to relocate. If you travel 2 to 3 miles south on Scatterfield road (the road the mall is on), you will find a thriving and growing business and shopping area surrounding I-69. Nothing like the heyday of General Motors who employed nearly 30,000 people in the 1980s, but growing.
I remember that mall pretty well. My mom worked at the Elder beerman store in the early 00s. (Where the Carsons store is now) I remember going there quite a bit before she quit working there.
Love that font cinemas used back in the day! I assume that old cinema became the dollar theater at some point. Popcorn and gum sticking to the ground was always waiting inside! 😆
Cinema I II closed down probably close to 10 years before the mall closed. The north view church used to be a cinema as well. The theatre at the back replaced the JC Penney they tore down so they could build the theatre
I sat one night at Garfields in the mall, waiting for a friend to get off work, one night drinking beer, and watched the first texas road house go up in flames, same location, I think maybe 2 years after they opened...
I dated a girl from Anderson that went to Highland High, we used to hit that mall every weekend, then go to Castleton/Keystone as well. Those places used to be 90s kids version of social media LOL
I dated a girl that went to Anderson high in 1990 as a teen going to the mall on weekends was the sh1t you right that was our social media what a years. The mounds mall was always pack on weekends specially in the winter.
I visited Anderson several times when traveling in my territory for work. It’s the only place that I have seen a Target close down. Everyone I met in Anderson was very nice, but the area was unfortunately very depressing. I’m not sure why I didn’t go check out the mall.
I remember every year going out to eat at Garfield’s every chance for my birthday such a shame the mall closed down I loved going here and now I’m sad I miss you mounds mall
Universal looks like it might have been a franchise brand family style or diner restaurant way back in the day. All these buildings just rotting away… very sad…
Cinema 1&2 was closed down in 2002, opened in 1974. The Northview Church used to be Showplace 4 the second theater the Mall had. For what I have been told Cinema 1&2 is scheduled for demolition later this year (2022) or sometime in 2023. The Mall was bought by someone who plans to reopen in 2023
I also read that up as well too. I used to work at the mall years ago from 2005-2008 at Sears, H&H Cleaning and Mounds Mall Cinema 10 . I was so fortunate back then, before I moved back to NYC.
I miss this mall. Grew up 20 miles away from this place and went there a lot as a kid. I really miss the Woolworths and the dining area in that store. Had a date with the girl that I wanted to marry at the movie theater back in the 80s.
So sad to see. Growing up in the 70s we were probably there at least twice a month. As a teen in the 80s my friends and I would go there to look for girls. Lol. We lived about 30 minutes away. There was a great Bonanza steakhouse there back then and the Woolworth with the lunch counter was the best. Malls are going the way of phonebooths, and Kodak film stores. Another era gone by.
I remember Mounds Mall in it's heyday way before the food court mentioned in this video. My grandmother worked at Montgomery Ward. On payday she had some extra money so would live it up by eating at the MCL Cafeteria inside this mall. She would turn over in her grave if she could see it now. What a dump!
This is happening all over Indiana. The malls in almost every city, Movie theaters and the city governments are allowing it with the silence of the population.
I miss it so much! me and my family always watched movies at it's cinema area. And at one point I had a membership for the bounce house as a kid.
The old cinema in the back. I remember going there to watch "The Towering Inferno" you had to wait in long lines.
Nice vid! Good walk around and some sweet department store shopping jamzzz in the background. 👍

Very interesting.
Should’ve flooded it.

I lived in Anderson from 1976 to 1985. The town pretty much went downhill after the Delco Remy plant closed.
Wow!!! These are among many stories I have been told since I first moved out there back in 2005.
Love that font cinemas used back in the day! I assume that old cinema became the dollar theater at some point. Popcorn and gum sticking to the ground was always waiting inside! 😆
Texas Roadhouse was abandoned because they built a new one near I-69 on the south side of Anderson.
Cinema I II closed down probably close to 10 years before the mall closed. The north view church used to be a cinema as well. The theatre at the back replaced the JC Penney they tore down so they could build the theatre
Garfield’s was just a restaurant at the front of the mall. The food court was in the center on the other side of Carson’s 3:22
I sat one night at Garfields in the mall, waiting for a friend to get off work, one night drinking beer, and watched the first texas road house go up in flames, same location, I think maybe 2 years after they opened...
@@tvann oh man! I remember when it caught fire! That was wild!
@bobbychance4601 IT was wild just sitting there watching it drinking beer
Hey Bobby! It's Mitzi. I've been watching some of these Anderson videos. Sad to see much of our town in not so great shape.
@@mitzirussell5786 it really is… the only part that the city is taking care of anymore is everything on south Scatterfield by the interstate

Also, you really missed a great local eatery if you didn't go 1 block west of the mall and have lunch at the Lemon Drop!
My mother works at the lemon drop actually (shree titley)
You are correct. That was indeed a Sears store.

Just wondering if it's the depression vibe that's effected the town in terms of how they ran their businesses.
Texas roadhouse moved closer down to I 69.

I went to that cinema the year it opened. I watched the Taking of Pelham 123. long time ago...
The food court wasn't by the Garfield its was on down the way
Update: Mounds Malls is back up for tax sale. I guess we'll find out the next steps are for our mall
I miss this mall. Grew up 20 miles away from this place and went there a lot as a kid. I really miss the Woolworths and the dining area in that store. Had a date with the girl that I wanted to marry at the movie theater back in the 80s.
I used to work there way back in the days as a sears worker.
Me too, hey Derrell whats up it's Junior! lol!!!

was my favorite place to go growing up

Cinema 1&2 definitely was an old theatre and the church used to be a theatre as well.
There's talk to turn it into a convention center of some kind (the mall)
This is happening all over Indiana. The malls in almost every city, Movie theaters and the city governments are allowing it with the silence of the population.
Its supposed to reopen in 2023
Hope so. 🤔
Not happening, the owner has no money
Sad 😞🥲
2nd mall in America now it’s nothing I lived three blocks south of it . Went there many times ..thanks General Motors for ruing my city!! And me
Sad
