To all you ignorant people saying he doesn't deserve to be in the Hall of Fame, IT'S BASKETBALL HALL OF FAME, NOT NBA HALL OF FAME! This dude did A LOT in building the whole competitive basketball landscape in his home country of Lithuania! Take a moment and watch the movie "The Other Dream Team", you'd have to be an idiot to still think he doesn't deserve a spot in the Hall of Fame after watching that.

+jan279 i agree he belongs to hall of fame so as all nba pioneers from Europe.. last one who did not recived call to it is Toni Kukoc, 4 time MVP, 3 time Europe final four champion, world champion, 3 time nba champion and so on and so on i will not count 2nd and 3rd places....

This is the Naismith HOF, which includes international (Sabonis, Schmidt, Meneghin etc), amateur (Globetrotters, Rens etc) and collegiate (Walton, Sampson) candidates. He created the path for European players that exists today. He worked, and worked, and chopped a miles long path through thick woods metaphorically speaking. There had never been a European player that was any good before. Some had came, quickly couldn't cut it. And left. So the NBA had no ties, interests, or scouting over there. Euro players they'd seen were soft, couldn't play defense. And were jumpshooters without slashing ability. He came, and was a completely different animal. It was documented, and players heard pippen and Jordan arguing who would guard him. Because guarding him wore you out so much, it took away from the rest of your game. He drove past anybody. And banged you up doing it. He was euro stepping while driving before the NBA ever saw it. And guys were taken back by this move. And didn't know what to do to stop it. He enters a title contending team with superstars. And in a lot of ways the go to guy. Because he was so physical and scored at will. This was when the NBA decided they should develop a relationship over in Europe. and take a better look at recruiting over there. And in the Olympics we just had, with so many big name NBA talents playing for other countries. They simply walked through that path that this man cut through.
