When you were biasing it for tape, turning bias pots clockwise was there a drop off after a max point or did you just dial it back counter clockwise to the desired dB reduction level ?
Usually you would want a calibration tape with which you can set up the 0dB on the reproduce amplifier. Or at least have one relyable machine that can record a 1kHz tone at 0dB for you on the desired tape type and then do the same procedure set 0dB on the machine in the reproduce amplifier. After that you can now calibrate the recording circuit by recording a 1kHz tone on the same machine and set the record current to 0dB on playback from tape during the recording. Then set the bias according to the frequency response graph given by the manufacturer. I fixed a few czechoslovak Tesla reel to reel decks and I tune the bias on a 100Hz tone and a 14kHz tone at 19cm/s. The goal here is to set the bias so that you have the same dB level at the lower and higher frequency. After youre done you go back to a 1kHz tone and check if your 0dB is still set correctly. If no then set recording current again and re do the bias alignment. Once youre done set good your tape deck has been aligned :)

I know the video is a year old but I cannot restrain myself from having to note. The tape tensioning system needs a lot more work done. Eithet those are incredibelly heavy reels or the tensioning system its problematic.

Great job! I have two of the same model. What reference fluxivity did you use to set 0 on the VU meters? And what tape type did you calibrate it for?
