Great video! I have a question about the track that you may have an idea about. After each station, I've noticed a short spur line to nothing (see 16:17). The line doesn't seem to have the infrastructure to have been double tracked in the past, so what are those spurs for? Another thing I noticed is at 34:40, when approaching Sasazu, the switch in the opposite direction is leading to that spur and there is a train waiting on the platform. Is it a safety system to make sure a red signal is showing? Or maybe to make sure the trains don't crash head on if the train in the station leaves early?
Sorry for the long paragraph, but I'm genuinely curious and a google search didn't lead to anything.

Those are for emergency "derailing" in case the train can't stop, I think.

The mechanisms you're hinting to are blind endings, aka "derailing points", meaning it's a switch for the protection of moving trains. As long as the signal for a leaving train is on red, the train will roll onto the short track after passing the red signal. The train will be stopped by a pile of ballast or a buffer or simply by derailing. It's an additional safety system to stationary electronic safety measures influencing the train control. Just watch some more videos and you might even see the switch moving before the signal shows green. These derailing points prevent (slanting) collisions and can be found on many railroad systems all around the globe.

@@mattifriedrich7201 that's what I figured, but I hadn't see it in videos from other countries. Do you know if it's mainly for single track lines?

@@josephj9828 No, it can also be found on double tracked main lines at stations as well as on side tracks at passing points.
