Thanks again Rich! The first coat especially with metallic paints, is the most important. (opposite on a real car). It sets the the metallic flakes to a uniform consistancy and eliminates what can be patchy shades of dark and light. It is where you can get a more consistent finish with the metallic paints. Think of the tiny aluminum partictal and how they react to the heaviness of your coats. Wet coats flood the metallic particles and tend to be darker, less sparkle and can give you a mottelled or patchy paint finish. The flake is laying flat and is drowned by colour. A light dusting, for the first coat, I get out the better halfs hairdryer & make sure it's dry, then my next 2 coats would be getting heavier with each coat, then your back up paint to finish. The best part is you don't have to be careful with top coats of clear which can effect that last coat of metallic flakes on a real car. My advice, first coat should almost be a dusting of paint & dry before you apply more paint. All the surfaces should look the same and as you pointed out, try to cover all the nooks & crannies and even give areas you know are going to wear through an extra coat. Cheers Garszy
Hey rich, I'm having the issue of when I paint the first base coat, blue, then I back it with with a white, it does not change color, I do about 6 coats for the base, then 2 for the backing, are you supposed to lightly paint the blue on so it's a bit transparent?
My question is when you spray the body do you always have to spray the black for the final touch to make it dark or is that just for that color for an example I seen you spray a raptor body two-tone color like a blue and black with the white stripe I like that I just want to know after I'm done painting the body do I spray it with a black coat just to make it pop
If you goto that other video: th-cam.com/video/yrVkOuRbusI/w-d-xo.html at 4:41, I go over what it looks like if you use different color backers on that metallic blue. Typically, if you use black, it will deepen/darken the color, silver and white will lighten or make other colors like yellow or orange "pop"
I do not have a clear body - that said, how might I be able to achieve this same colour or what other paints should I use to achieve it? I have a 1979 model of the Jeep Wrangler CJ5 from the show "Mork & Mindy", which appears to be very close to this same colour (darker, if anything) based on shots from the show - if this helps. Because this model/kit is notably rare and is a collectible, I really don't want to screw this up and I only want to invest in the best for it. Any suggestions from anyone would be much appreciated! (Note: I am in no considerable rush to make it, since I want to do careful, thorough research for my materials. Thus, late replies are welcome!)
Thank you for explaining how to use as I normally use tamiya paints & warm the paint up in cold temperatures but I've experienced with pactra in the past & with its (window tint black & flouresnt red & flouresnt green) I find pactra paints oily were as in tamiya paints are matt. When spraying coats. But seeing how different backers/base coat changes the affect really makes a difference. Thank you for showing as I'm in middle of spraying a matrix Mercedes C25 body in pactra candy purple.
nice explanation of how metallic paints look after you spray it on your rc body! using different backers and things like that. thank you!!! but, what i have to do to let the paint look like on the cap of the spray can? at 5:27 you can see that none of the colours you sprayed match the colour of the cap.
So u spray the vehicle upside down with the Truck first blue then black thats how i want my 4s kraton clear body to look blue with black stripes sick looking paint JOB
Yes, everything is done on the underside of the body - and some paints need a backer to reveal the true color like this metallic blue. The lighter the backer, the lighter the blue. Also, plan to do the black strip at the end with the backer
Nice job. I'm a rattle can painter too. I add 3 more prep steps. First I scuff the inside of the body except the windows with Scotch brite pad, then I wash and dry again and put the body out in the sun for a couple of hours to heat it up. Then just before spraying I run hot water over the can of paint to also warm it up. This allows the paint to come out in a nice even pattern. Now I have a lexan body that will never chip off it's paint. Ever try painting with chrome paint? Tricky, tricky but sooo cool when done. Keep your fine work here.
Good tips, Tom.....I've never scuffed the inside, but have heard that. I've never had any pactra paint flake or peel either - and yes, chrome paint is cool....I've used Spaz Stix Ulitmate mirror chrome - super easy to spray
absolutely one of the best presented and spoken tutorials ,thanks so much bud for taking the time out and showing the examples of the backing techniques there really awesome to see like that side by side , 10/10 and will definitely like and sub will look out for more great content from you :-)
i usually wait about 15-20 minutes between coats, but it depends on the temp. If the sun's out I usually let it sit in the sun for a bit in between coats.
Ben Cobb 5 mins is all you need if the sun is out, 15-20 mins is over kill as the first coat is lightly it almost dries within a minute, you actually need to wait 20 mins for the last coat as is the most wet coat because is more heavy, so at 20-30 mins is pretty much dried and ready to be handled, i wait atleast 45 mins though so it can cure more, sometimes an hour if I'm in no hurry. Also make sure to stay away from the wind as it can mess with your coats.
RC bodies are very flexible, so the paint has to adhere with out peeling or cracking. There’s extra additives in polycarbonate paint to keep it looking good. If you tried using automotive paint, it would just all peel right out
Would this have the same effect on a hard body such a Tamiya clodbuster body if the proper paint was used in reverse order? Such as a silver base coat followed by a metallic green followed by a clear coat?
I doubt it...the Tamiya line of paints called "TS" is for hardbodies and is designed to make the color on the lid. "PS" (All the Pactra Paints) are for polycarbonate and use the clearness of the body to adjust the color depending on backing color
I've always found Pactra's paint a bit better not in just quality, but availability at my local shops, price and also the color assortment - plus I love the metallic blue
I usually wait overnight - you want to make sure the paint is fully cured and not tacky, so it depends on the temperature. I start the window masks peeling by scraping with an exacting knife on the corner, the peel carefully
Hey Rich, I’m about to mask and paint my proline body. The body has a sunroof window, but didn’t come with a mask for that can I use blue or frog painters tape for that?
Yeah, sure - I usually use that Pactra / Testors thin strips as it gives you a clean edge with no bleed through. Some masking tape allows the spray paint to bleed the edge
You'll have to experiment......pick your red, give it 2-3 coats and back it with Black. A black backer will darken the color. The less amount of red (2 coats) will make it appear more red/black, if that makes sense
Hey! Great vid, body looks great!! I want to make my body the same, where could I get the same paint? I checked in my local hobby shop, but they don't have it. (Btw, I live in the U.K., just if that changes anything) cheers mate!
I think I missed something. Where did the overspray film come from? Was it already on the clear body or did you apply it at some point? Thanks! Very helpful video!

Rich, that color is rich, ha! I may get a new body just to use this paint. looks awesome

Yeah, it might be too many coats of the blue. It should still be transparent - I would only do 2-3 coats of the blue
Thanks for taking the extra effort to demonstrate what the color would look like with the black, silver, or white backers.
Glad to help!
As usual, good tips for someone who is new to painting Lexan. 🤙🏼 Thanks for sharing Rich.
im excited to see how you did the matte
Adhertion, is that an actual word, adhere and adhesion together? Awesome vids

Crazy how three cans of that paint plus a clear car body are over $100. Good, appreciated video, nonetheless.
Totally agree with you there.
Great job!
I’m so sick of cheap rc bodies. I’m just running mine without it next time
Bodies help protect what's underneath, tbh

Glad to help out!

100%! lol
great paint job. what backing color if I were to use candy apple red?
Nice video. I have some lime green pearl and metallic midnight black I'm trying this with.
Beautiful!!
Thank you! Cheers!
I just bought a new Jconcepts Finnisher for my #v3 KRATON! How did you get your cuts so nice with a dermal or did you use a Hobby Knife?
Use a sharp hobby knife to score the outside of the body, and then just start tearing on the score line
Is the body for the UDR

When a RC body shell comes pre painted from factory it has this like grayish white colour on the inside of the body shell. What is this?
They're usually screen printed and not painted. Very few RTR's are painted
Any Advice on how to get a Black Cherry color? What would be the first stage color and what would be the backer?
It's paint a test strip - you'll likely need a light shade of the red you choose, but not too may coats to get a deeper almost midnight red look
Is it possible to paint 🎨 plastic Aarms
It's possible, but the issue is whether the paint will stay. it will mostly likely flake off due to the arms bending or get scratched off anyway
@@TheRCNetwork appreciate you replying & the information Yea that paint wouldn’t last thx😇😎⚙️
thats seriously nice !
How did you make the black matte finish? Great job
th-cam.com/video/nuRf2HPmvtk/w-d-xo.html
Great videos on R/C. Always liked Testors paints
Looks great! How long do you suggest between coats? Thanks
No Humans Allowed of course! 😂😂 Real world experience from Rich may say different. It never hurts to ask. Thanks

what makes RC model paint different than regular spray paint or even auto spray paint?

@@TheRCNetwork I see, thanks for responding.
I’ve heard of some people lightly scuffing up the inside of the body before painting. Do you subscribe or see a benefit to that method? Thanks Rich!
I know that Chris does from Hemistorm, but I've never needed to, nor seemed any issue with not
@@TheRCNetwork gotcha! Looking forward to seeing your new trx4 Bronco in action👍👍 stay safe!
Great video, really helped. Thank you!
The best colour on RC model)
What body is that
It’s for the Axial Yeti Score trophy truck
Ok, thanks!
Were can I find that body for a 2wd traxxas slash.
Go on jconcepts
Great video thank you

No gloves? Always throw some gloves on when painting
Naw, I'm a guy....no gloves needed!😉
Enjoy the fingerprints ;)
Why do you use pactra paints why not tamiya paint? (even though this series is sponsored by pactra)
I've always found Pactra's paint a bit better not in just quality, but availability at my local shops, price and also the color assortment - plus I love the metallic blue
Dang! I've always wanted to try pactra's paint but unfortunately i haven't been successful in finding their paint so i only use tamiya
So u only used one can of each color? I haven’t painted my own body before and I just want to know how much paint I’ll need
For this size, yes, one can of the blue and one can of the black
Ok thanks
R.I.P. Pactra
Yep, it’s sad….and this was the second time for them. They already discontinued once!
How long do you wait to take the window mask off and how do you get it off without messing up the paint edge?
I usually wait overnight - you want to make sure the paint is fully cured and not tacky, so it depends on the temperature. I start the window masks peeling by scraping with an exacting knife on the corner, the peel carefully

Well I guess Ian going to have to take that chance 1) it’s already sprayed and waiting for backer color will see
I came up with a unique idea can you ghost in a label or design after it’s been painted and before backer color?
Back the Blue.
Exactly!
What is overspray film and where do you get it
It comes already installed on most clear bodies
3m spray mask. Best stuff ever
Good job m8
Thanks buddy! Maybe a subscribe?
what pacers colors to get a dark red?
pactra*
You'll have to experiment......pick your red, give it 2-3 coats and back it with Black. A black backer will darken the color. The less amount of red (2 coats) will make it appear more red/black, if that makes sense
Sounds like your using Casey neistat music from his videos.......hmmmmmm🤔
Yeah, I made this video in October of last year....so Casey was still an influence! lol

I think I missed something. Where did the overspray film come from? Was it already on the clear body or did you apply it at some point? Thanks! Very helpful video!
Yes, most aftermarket and OEM bodies come with an overspray film (just a clear film)
