@@AtariEric Aye, they captured the mentality of a modern woman quite nicely. The 90s version of Catwoman was more interesting, as she was more of an anti-hero. Not really evil, but hardly altruistic. She did things for a greater purpose and something larger than her own vanity. This modern Catwoman encapsulates the modern feminist mentality: Entitled, narcissistic, unwilling to accept any accountability or responsibility, and who believes the world exists for her amusement, enrichment, and enjoyment. And to hell with everyone else.

Catwoman felt like an inversion to Batman; where Bruce Wayne is just a mask Selina Kyle is the same both ways, where Alfred is close and trusted confidant of Batman Greta was essentially a babysitter who was more than happy to quit when she had the chance, and ofc while Bruce had completely lost his parents Selina's father was merely in jail

While I wouldn't say this is the most interesting take on Catwoman, I will say I do like how this Catwoman is less of a relatively sympathetic character. Instead, she is just a simple thrill-seeking elite who acts as an inverse of how Bruce wears a mask to help others. In contrast, Selina wears a mask to steal from others as she feels like she can do whatever she wants regardless of the consequences. Even though I wish the chemistry between this Catwoman and Batman was better, I do still like how this version of Catwoman takes inspiration from Batman, even down to having her own Cat-Mobile, which I thought was hilarious.
Greta was also the MVP of this episode. Loved how she got payback on Selina

    • @MarioMastar
      @MarioMastar 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +29

Greta getting payback in the end was absolutely perfect! It also helps reinforce that they're not going to stick to making Catwoman as one dimensional as implied earlier in the episode. I think one of the things at least BTAS (and the live action movie) tried to avoid is the stereotype that "Cats are evil" with their depiction of Catwoman as a villain that eventually turns good or at least helps Batman even if for her own less than noble reasons. In an ironic sense, this version may end up being MORE sympathetic as time goes on if this is the first of a few future appearances we'll see of her, given they straight up start off wtih her being a villain and losing so powerfully, she really has nowhere to go but up.... likely after a short "revenge" arc though.

I do wonder if Selina's descent to poverty would actually make into a better person. A key aspect of Selina's evolution from an unrepentant thief to a sympathetic, anti-hero is Frank Miller's addition that she came from the lower-class and had to literally fight to survive. If you look at any depictions of Selina as an anti-hero or a legit love interest to Batman, they nearly all share that backstory, whether it be a mousy secretary who lives in a lowly apartment or a waiter trying to keep her girlfriend from being killed by the mob.

To an extent, I feel like this Selina’s behaviour stems from how her family brought her up. Like her, her father was also doing illegal actions(tax fraud) and from how it sounds she’s gotten in trouble but got out thanks to her family. From how it sounds, her father may not have been the best role model or instilled proper morals and never properly discipline her when she did immoral actions or made sure she had atleast learned her lesson. I remember this Ep of Brooklyn nine nine, Tagger where this kid that tagged stuff got away a lot because his dad was deputy police commisioner. And when talking, Jake said the kid was lucky only for holt to say he feels bad for the kid, saying he really isn’t.
“I mean what kind of a father cares so little for his son, he lets him get away with everything”.
I can imagine he could’ve been the type that made sure she had nice things and would help her out of trouble…but failed to give her the proper support and attention she really needed.
Bruce had loving parental figures who were both in his life and instilled good virtues in him and though their relationship is strained, I imagine Alfred also made sure Bruce stayed on a clean path towards his journey to becoming Batman and helps wheel him in when he’s going too far and make him reflect.
And Like you said it seems she has no mom(etheir died or left) which probably also had an affect on her upbringing, perhaps if she’s dead, that’s why she considered herself an orphan. One dead…the other wasn’t really there when it counted.

The only problem I really have with this version of Catwoman is she felt like a member of the Batman the animated series terrible trio. who in that cartoon series were three rich kids who decided they were bored of regular sports because they didn't give the same thrill anymore so they turned to a life of crime I'm because they figured nobody would be able to catch them.
The Catwoman episode pretty much establishes from what we see in her penthouse apartment that this version of Selena participate in sports and had gotten several golden trophies meaning she's basically just like the terrible trio members deciding to take on the life of crime for the thrill.

    • @barracuda6900
      @barracuda6900 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

@@mrheroprimes there is a difference though- Selina in CC is pretty much flat broke and does what she does to keep herself afloat, as well as for the thrill. She also doesn't seem to mind living in a hideout slum apartment, later in the episode.
The Terrible Trio, from what we saw in their episode, were very financially secure and had plenty of money to spare. They did what they did purely for the thrill, like their hunting expeditions or globe trotting adventures. While Selina was happy with her new run down apartment, Warren 'Fox' Lawford was shocked and horrified about being shoved into a run down prison cell like any common criminal.
The Terrible Trio were far worse, in terms of their 'entitled rich brat' energy and vibes.

It's a nice way of tying into the whole "Anti-hero" mirror where Batman is a good guy with good ends to the means, his means often make him look like at best a vigilante and at worst, an anti-hero. Catwoman is more like a villain turned anti-villain, where she steals for the thrill, but often finds herself on the right side of justice. as time goes on. Given this was the first episode to show her and they effectively all but broke her down to nothing, and how prominent of a character Catwoman is in media, it's likely she will slowly see her petty theft turn to her own kind of vengence before turning into something of a genuine respect/romance for Batman. Not uncommon for the "Villain slowly and reluctantly turned hero" trope, especially since unlike Penguin, who never really had a formal lore to tether him (or her in this case) beyond being a wealthy suiter who uses the glitz to hide a powerful criminal underworld, Catwoman, much like Two face and Joker, are pretty well established and have certain rules that people just expect cause of thier notoriety.

6:04 After a rewatch, I think the episode gave some subtle hints that Batman feels something for Selina.
    - When she kissed him, he hesitates for moment and the way he said "enough" sound like he was giving in to her advance.
    - When Batman saved her, he teand Selina's wound leg (nice reference to their first meeting in the comics btw), very slowly for someone who acts he doesn't feel love or lust. He gets only when Selina is about to imply there's something between them.
I think Bruce is attract to Selina, despite her flaws, but, as established in this same episode, he doesn't know how handle these emotions, choosing to repress them and acting cold and dismissive towards others, including Alfred.

Catwoman was the character I was most looking forward to seeing in the show and I was not disappointed at all. I make no secret of the fact that I don't hold BTAS Catwoman in terribly high regard and I find that depiction of Catwoman to be hardly memorable or compelling. However, while I've had my apprehensions for the show before its debut, I was actually fairly confident that I was going to enjoy Caped Crusader's Catwoman quite a bit more by the way they talked about her and honestly I feel like Bruce Timm got a better handle on Catwoman already in TNBA so I was actually quite optimistic. I felt they struck a perfect balance of showcasing her playfulness and kleptomania as well as the thrill she gets whenever Batman chases her.
And another thing that I absolutely loved about Catwoman was how perfectly they showed in the beginning that she was clearly taking an actual interest in Bruce Wayne because Selina Kyle being interested in both Bruce and Batman has always been a staple of the character in the comics and I consider very essential that BTAS ignored. And my God, Christina Ricci was so amazing. I can't wait to see more of her as Catwoman. Although I still would say that the best animated Catwoman is the one voiced by Gina Gershon in The Batman. Catwoman in The Batman felt ripped straight from the Jim Balent run.

Bullock almost catches her by grabbing her cape, and her high heels are shown as the reason she falls from the building and needs to be saved by Batman. Nothing for how she was leaving her fingerprints all over the place, don't know if that technology exists in the setting yet.

I enjoyed this depiction of Catwoman as a complex character who embodies a blend of charm and sophistication while also exhibiting a playful yet morally ambiguous nature. It recalls her earlier representation in _Batman Returns,_ where she navigates the fine line between allure and instability, which in turn aligns with a recurring theme in Bruce Timm's work: even characters who appear dignified and high-society, like Catwoman, can possess underlying complexities and vulnerabilities, reflecting how anyone-regardless of their outward appearance-can be susceptible to darker impulses.

It did remind me of those stories in which Catwoman is in it more for the thrill than for what she was stealing.
In these stories, when the robbery wasn’t challenging enough she’d give the thing back and try to steal it again just to see if she could pull it off again now that the security/police/Batman were aware of her.

Kinda like Black Cat from the infamous 2017 Spiderman cartoon, who's also an unrepentant thief. Unlike Catwoman, all of Felicia's character development in the comics is completely ignored. Which explains why she acted more like an enemy to Spidey than one of his love interests and trusted allies. Sure, she has bad luck powers in the comics, but not very often, thanks to Dr. Strange, who removed them from her.

It's interesting to see this version of Catwoman that doesn't have the upper hand on Batman. While she is basically a rich girl who has never been told no her entire life this episode was very fun. Even the ending was pretty good with the maid selling all of Selina's possessions. It feels reminiscent of older shows and you normally wouldn't see that on tv nowadays.

Seen how Selina takes inspirations from Batman and how next season he will most likely begin to work with others (like Gordon and Barbara), I think she could follow a similar path in the following seasons, creating her own gang of thieves (maybe even meeting Holy Robinson, her sidekick from the comics).
Also, since Bruce Timm is clear a fan of the 70's/80's Batman comics (as proven by BTAS episodes like "The Laughting Fish" and "The Strange Secret of Bruce Wayne"), I could see he using Selina's return to adapt the Len Wein run, in which Selina tries to reform and begin to do business with Wayne Enterprise, resulting in her and Bruce beginning a relationship.
In the show this could fit with Batman's arc about becoming more and compassinate and empathetic . In this case he could begin to use his company to help criminals to reform and offer them a second chance. Selina could be the one to put this idea to test, with Bruce having doubts but choosing to not reject Selina so he can keep an eye on her and see if her intentions are truth.
Much like in the comics, he and Selina could become close, adding more drama to the situation, with Bruce dealing with the fact he has feelings to a criminal while Selina is now in conflict about continue her reformed life or going back to be a criminal, betraying the trust of Bruce.

I knew I loved your videos for a reason as you offer a new perspective that I had not seen despite watching the episode twice. That said the episode overall still felt quite disappointing.
The connection between Batman and Catwoman felt lacking (Not in the romantic sense). The beauty of Batman is the dynamic he has against his rouges gallery. Every villain brings something different and unique to the table. This version of Catwoman could almost be replaced with a common crook given how quickly Batman is able to dispatch of her. Even in the 40s comics Catwoman was very crafty despite being outmatched by Batman. The courtroom scene also irks me as well as there were two eye witness watching her flee from the jewelry store, cops mind you, and that still wasn't enough to convict her on top all while having a past criminal record. The episode ultimately felt very predictable and very flat, I guess i was expecting much more.
However I very much did enjoy the video, I feel that it is important to listen to many different perspectives to generally understand a narrative within the community, below is a link to that creator. It also leads me to ponder if the creators had difficulty choosing a story from the 40s because her character is somewhat shallow then, if so they could've also taken stories from the 70s where she is much more developed by then and her outfit is almost identical to that of the 40s.

I'm going in episode order, so Firebug is next week, and Harley is the week after that. Currently writing that script, and will be editing the video this week!

I love the simplicty of this cat-woman, that she is just the anti batman, to compare and contrast with our hero

Catwoman what's not to love about our iconic cat Batman rogue. She is one of my top 5 Batman's Rogues. In my opinion, she is the perfect foil and villainous version opposite of Bruce Wayne aka Batman. Selina Kyle isn't pure insane like The Joker or tragically sad like Mr. Freeze. Unlike Batman, Catwoman has the freedom to steal and cheat for herself. She does it for fun and she does have similairites to Batman but while Batman wants to help Catwoman wants to steal.
This iteration of Selina while not interesting I did enjoy how she was basically a thrill seeker turn eleven. She didn't needed a tragic backstory as unlike Bruce who's trauma resulted in him trying to fix Gotham. Selina doesn't care she's taking away things for herself. Also I love Greta and her dynamic with Selina mirrors to Bruce and Alfrd yet opposite. Not only are both of them alone with no family, they only have a waitress by their side and have rich personas. But unlike Bruce, Selina only cares for her selfishness and besides cats she represents how the rich in this version of Gotham thrive.
I enjoyed how Selina is what Bruce could've been had he became more selfish. If he became more horrible by getting what he wants rather than what he needs. Unpopular opinion but I'm not a big fan of Catwoman in BTAS. Yes I did enjoyed her episodes but for me out of all the BTAS rogues she didn't reach her potential. At least BTAS Catwoman wasn't a literal laughingstock like how BTAS treated Bane.
Overall my favorite Catwoman iteration is probably Injustice or her solo comic story. In my opinion while the former gives me conplicated feelings those versions are for me the best iterations of Catwoman in my opinion. While Catwoman here isn't my favorite iteration I think she's enjoyable and I hope to see more of this Caped Crusader adaption.

Have you saw doug Walker review ofnthe show ? Did you think he was too harsh on it and unfair to compare to x men 97?

I haven’t seen it, and he’s more than entitled to his opinion. I can see why someone might compare the two, but they’re very different products. I loved X-Men 97, it was a revival of an old show with modern tech. Caped Crusader is a fresh start and reimagining of some of the ideas Bruce Timm had decades ago.
If you’re coming in to Caped Crusader expecting it to be more episodes of BTAS then I can see why you might be disappointed, because it really isn’t that similar at all.
