I was the original actor to play "Mortimer the cockney Indian The man who dies"..in 1967 national company of "The Fanasticks" staring David Cryer and Diana Payton and the late Great Walter Maguin ..
Hi, George. During Mortimer's fall once, he came close to hitting his head hard on the wooden floor. I was in the front row of a performance and instinctively stuck my foot out to cushion the fall. Perhaps it was you. :)
George, it is a pleasure and an honor to "meet" you. As a youth, I played Luisa twice in local productions. Mortimer cracks me up - one speech, but it's a great one! The rest of the time...dying! He's such a well-written character, and I'm sure he was a blast to perform!
I’ve done this show three times. I played Mortimer twice and Matt once. I LOVE this show so much! I hope to one day play Bellamy opposite my real life daughter as Louisa
I saw the original at the Sullivan Street Playhouse (NYC, Greenwich Village) shortly after it opened. I fell in love with the play as well as my "date". The date and I separated shortly thereafter but my love for this lovely play has never wavered. i saw it on TV (with the young Barbra Streisand) and saw it at Sullivan Street Playhouse at least 3 more times (this was the longest running play in NYC history, at one time). I even saw it in Mexico (American cast of retired theatre people, still a charming and lovely presentation). I saw the movie (terrible, but better than nothing). Finally, I had the good luck to meet and talk with Harvey Schmidt (when he was living at my friend, Saul Lapidus's house on NY's upper west side). Obviously every presentation was better or worse than each other. But the play itself, the music, the characters, the staging, everything about it STILL (at my current in 2018 age of 82 makes my eyes water). This tiny bit of fluff is so much more than fluff, it is a magnificent conception and everything about it compares with the thousands of plays (big broadway, to off off broadway, to college plays to grant opera) that I've seen all over the world. IT WILL ALWAYS BE SPECIAL NO MATTER WHO DOES IT; NO MATTER HOW THEY PRESENT IT. And the staging and scenery is always superb as my/your imagination is the very best. After all, everyone was once young and almost everyone has been in love.
This is my favorite comment ever! I would love to ge to know you Michael. I couldn't agree with you more! Also you sound like a very interesting person! Message me on here! let's talk on the phone.
I so loved Your comment ! This musical was the first, live production I seen . I'm now going on 72, God willing, and this opened My eyes to musical theatre. I was in February of my life, and am now in the November of life !! My Mother took Me as a present, and I must say it was the best present ever! This is when I LEARNED THAT MEMORIES can be the best !! Mama then purchased the Recording of the Original Cast Recording !! I wore it out !! The songs are still some of my favorite!! They touch every emotion and make me cry, laugh, and everything in between !! I, too saw a few different presentations of this Iconic Musical . I remember seeing a traveling cast came to the University of the Pacific , here in Stockton California, and it was awesome ! It was an All Black Cast, it was so good, and showed theater has No color , any race can do any production of any play ! Loved the experience !! This Cast did a Fantastic performance of the Fantastics!!
I directed this musical three times in San Antonio..The (Old) Church Theatre (1981), Theatre One (1987) (Actors Theatre Of San Antonio) and The Main Avenue Studio (1993)(ATSA). Each had different cast and each holds a special place in my heart. .I will soon be directing it in San Diego at The Point Loma Playhouse in May 2019.
Good luck! it was a blast to perform and direct. I miss that old church theatre! We did this at the Josephine. If you need an El Gallo in SD give me a call!
I directed it twice, mostly with the same cast. First run, for El Gallo I cast a singer who could act. Second time I cast an actor who could sing. I learned a whole lot that year.
I saw it six times at the Sullivan Street Playhouse in the Village. It was a great way to impress a first date. I guess I didn't impress them much afterward.
The summer after I graduated from college, I was in a summer theater production in the role of Matt. That was a LONG time ago, but I still remember a lot of the dialogue. 🙂
my university did a production of this, and it was so cool, because they made it a meta-play. like, a play that knew it was a play. between actual scenes, they'd have the cast come onstage in plainclothes and discuss stuff like how to keep the scenes covid-appropriate. like, they used a rope to represent love instead of hugging/kissing, and used hula-hoops when dancing in a circle during "just dance" instead of holding hands. the costumes and set were also really minimal because "no budget because of covid" so it was just very interesting - and also hilarious 👌🏻
I am dj hulkinstein I also play music maybe not the same type but It stemmed from his acting lenard harten actor who room matted with Warren baetty in college thank you for showing this show he is on his way to God and remembers nothing of his life thank you
He fought for America in ww2 please hand him a cheer he lived long he lived hard he was an actor an this was the show I saw him in again thank you for posting this
I really like this production! I'm going to attempt to audition for Luica, but I'm two years younger than the cutoff age...I'm told I look five years older than I am, and sound it too. I hope I get it! haha.
I came here just to watch the soon its gonna rain choreography It looked good then I heard her sing YIKES I took some notes on what not to do for my performance.
Everyone is okay except the girl and Gallo (I think his name is) was great. I saw it a few months ago and honestly everyone was better there. Not to put these guys down much though since it was one of the best productions I've ever seen.
I’m playing Luisa and was trying to get an idea but um this version of her.... I’m not sure if she was trying to sound like that on purpose but that ain’t quite it
At 48:04 the actor playing Matt flubs his lines when he was supposed to sing "We'll find four limbs of a tree. We'll build four walls and a floor. We'll bind it over with leaves, And run inside to stay."
It shouldn't. Without percussion, there is one section where the harpist has to play claves, which is very annoying. Balance is tricky. If the piano is amplified, then the harp would have to be, also. What's odd is that the harpist is invisible.

George Poulos That's amazing! Wow

I had the privilege of playing Luisa in a local production, still one of my favorite shows!!! Mortimer was one of my favorite characters!!!
A little before my time (the 1980s). Howard Lawrence, Sal Provenza.

Thank you for sharing this- it’s a wonderful production. El Gallo is amazing! I’m enjoying everyones performance ❤️
Thank you so much for this! I played Luisa when I was sixteen. What a long, strange trip it has been...it's nice to revisit it here!

Thank you so much for the video! I'm doing a research for a Broadway prep class and just watched this entire show! this was FANTASTIC!
Don't you mean "it was Fantastick!"?
I love this play. I saw the original in 1966: blessed to be born in NY.
I saw it six times at the Sullivan Street Playhouse in the Village. It was a great way to impress a first date. I guess I didn't impress them much afterward.
Winston Smith Can you summarize what this play is about?
@@itoburrito9151 Parents arranging the lives of their children, as always.
You will get complaints about The Rape Ballet because few people are aware of the classic use of rape - "abduction"

My school is about to do this show 😁 I'm auditioning for Luisa
Pianist is absolutely amazing!
That El Gallo is probably the best I've heard from a community theater production!
Thank you! Though technically this was a paid gig. :P
I am dj hulkinstein I also play music maybe not the same type but It stemmed from his acting lenard harten actor who room matted with Warren baetty in college thank you for showing this show he is on his way to God and remembers nothing of his life thank you

It does need just a touch more energy, more snap. It helps to do it in a very small space, because it forces you to keep moving along.
The Broadway one is the best ! Love the actors ! Its a must to see ! NYC
You didn't see the original production on Sullivan Street.
I really like this production! I'm going to attempt to audition for Luica, but I'm two years younger than the cutoff age...I'm told I look five years older than I am, and sound it too. I hope I get it! haha.
I saw a tour of this, but it was like a steampunk version. It was so cool! And the singers were better.....
The steampunk versions are the BEST! It works so well for this show!
I came here just to watch the soon its gonna rain choreography It looked good then I heard her sing YIKES I took some notes on what not to do for my performance.
I'm trying to find a musical for my high school, it needs to have a small cast and the ability to be low budget. This seems to be the show
You need a professional harpist to play it.
We did this at our high school in 1965. I don't remember having a harpist.
truly amazing
for all the problems with this production i think this El Gallo is great
Not so sure about that. His monologues are a monotone. Nice voice without feeling.
I’m not sure if she was trying to sound like that on purpose but that
ain’t quite it
How did you do singing soprano?
Kenneth Nelson (the first Matt) was from San Antonio.
At 48:04 the actor playing Matt flubs his lines when he was supposed to sing
"We'll find four limbs of a tree.
We'll build four walls and a floor.
We'll bind it over with leaves,
And run inside to stay."
Ok the criticism is harsh, El Gallo pretty good the boy reminds me of Corky from Guffman.
My college was supposed to this show in summer 2017 but it was replaced with You’re a good man Charlie Brown
Overall, a good performance. I question the need for drums, though...and does the piano really need a microphone?
It shouldn't. Without percussion, there is one section where the harpist has to play claves, which is very annoying. Balance is tricky. If the piano is amplified, then the harp would have to be, also. What's odd is that the harpist is invisible.
Yikes. El Gallo nailed it...but yikes.
El Gallo was AWESOME in this. But. He doesn’t have much to be better than if I’m honest. Matt and Luisa are…. Sheeeeeeeshh… 😅
The mute was a cute girl when we did it.
Same here
Ha I love how critical people are on here!
LOL I have to agree so critical! Lighten up a bit.
The criticisms are legitimate. The Fantasticks is a very heavy piece with high demands for the cast.
Maybe not the same year he did. BUt rhe play itself thank you
El Gallo is good but idk about everyone else
The opening "September" those people were thinking of themselves not their characters as they sang. Ugh
Can someone please tell me where Matts monologue begins?
This version leaves much to be desired. I saw it in Greenwich Village a long time ago.
I tend to agree. The lighting . . . among other things is terrible.
Nice
9:26
Wow..." I can see it" was SLOW...
Oh man - that female lead is a horrible singer!! Her notes are all over the place.
The singing in this was questionable as the drummer was a bit too intense and really he should be there at all
Acting is great but the singing done by Matt and Luisa is not good...at all.
