try smaller tube for better range, sleeve must not be stretched to fit the tube, otherwise you obtain the very small range you just obtained you will also obtain more pulling force

Looks like a good 10mm of contraction there
Cool idea. There needs to be more gap between the strands of metal to allow more contraction in length.
Maybe all he has to do is take out every other strand?
