The Central-Mid-Levels Escalator and Walkway System, commonly referred to as the Central Escalator, is one of Hong Kong's most unique and practical infrastructure projects. Located in the Central and Western District, this system is the longest outdoor covered escalator system in the world, stretching over 800 meters (2,600 feet) with a vertical climb of about 135 meters (443 feet).
Opened in 1993, the escalator system was designed to ease traffic congestion and provide a convenient mode of transportation for residents living in the Mid-Levels area to travel to and from the bustling business district in Central. It consists of 20 escalators and three moving walkways, operating in a downhill direction in the morning until 10:00 AM and then switching to an uphill direction for the rest of the day.
The Central Escalator has become a notable attraction for both locals and tourists. It offers a unique way to explore the city, passing through various vibrant neighborhoods, including Soho and Lan Kwai Fong, known for their lively dining and nightlife scenes.
