Becoming a doctor, or rather, pursuing any career for the prestige is one of the greatest hindrances to ever understanding what fulfills you the most. Experiencing true admiration and respect is not a goal; it is a side effect when you dedicate yourself to your passion, whatever that may be.

Maybe we're wrong about being so stressed out. For me, that fear is caused more by my low self-esteem than my actual abilities and knowledge, i don't know if you're experiencing a similar thing or not. I root for you regardless of what your future choise in career is and i trust your decision and gut feeling. As for me, i'm far too determined to stop now, regardless of being anxious, so i'll go for it and won't regret it even if i fail since i would at least get to try. I have my own reasons to want to keep going down this road and pros outweight the cons when it comes to my wishes and personality. I can understand if you don't feel the same or don't have as good of a financial support as i do that would allow you to experiment with your future more and make mistakes along the way far easier. Regardless of anything, this may sound cheesy, but i believe in you. You know yourself the best and you're gonna be amazing at your job regardless of what you become.

Hey, Cara! I was on the same boat as you not too long ago. I was torn between law and medicine. One day, I was doing some research online and came across an article that instantly made me choose medicine-so Gad I did.
The article was written by a physician reflecting on his life as an ER doc. He talked about how no other job is like being a physician. He said that's the closet you can get to another human without having to know them personally at all, having the skill set to change or save a grateful life is rewarding . He ended by asking , "70 years from now, will you look back and regret not going medical to school?" That sealed the deal for me. I hope this helps.

I was kicking myself in the butt being upset because I never got to become a doctor earlier in life like so many others (early 20s). However, lately and after watching this, I don't regret it too much because unlike those 20 yr olds I gained real life experience and got to start saving money while pursuing a different career path. My ambition to become a doctor has never once left my mind, I knew I always wanted to get into this profession but now I'm glad it will be later in my life(30s). I'm more financially stable than those that go straight into med school after college and I know how to tackle the stresses that come from schooling (thanks law school). Non traditional applicants also have a better understanding of why they want to become a doctor.

I always wanted to be a neurosurgeon but couldn’t get into med school after my A levels. I’m 24 and by the time I’ll probably get into med school I’ll be 26, but that isn’t stopping me somehow from pursuing what I always believed was my life’s mission. At times I’m really scared because I’ll be done with my post graduate training in my late 30s but then I tell myself, what would I be doing otherwise? Boring paper work? Reading dry and completely mundane statutes? Medicine never really left my heart. I hope I make it.

It’s not overhyped as much as the public perception is being downgraded by other mid levels who are wanting to equate their degrees as equal to physicians and want independent practice . It’s so frequent now to see NPs and PAs all walking around with white coats starting their “doctors” (of nursing or doctor of PA lol) to patients in hospitals. So many states due to the lobby efforts of the nursing organizations have passed bills to allow them to work without supervision. When anyone with such little experience can work on their own , why is it that medical students that become doctors still have to go through residency to even practice medicine at all. Residency is much needed because as physicians we understand the importance of the learning done in residency, but to see everyday NPs and PAs acting and promoting themselves as doctors while simultaneously seeing the physician profession put under bad light due to “greed or know it all’s” really makes me question what medicine will be like when I become an attending as I am a 4th year Med student right now . Good video tho!

    • @aleksap5459
      @aleksap5459 4 ปีที่แล้ว +20

Syed I find that really fascinating; in Australia we don’t have PAs to my knowledge and what NPs we do have are very few in number and very, very experienced and senior in their field, so nobody else can really compare to doctors here. There has been some stir to allow nurses an increased scope of practice (like perform colonoscopies) mainly to relieve some burden on waiting lists, which the Australian Medical Association is generally strongly against; as a nurse applying for med I have very mixed opinions in the matter lol! I don’t think that anyone could come even close to matching the knowledge, training and ultimately authority that doctors have here any time soon, and honestly I don’t think that should change. I’m so used to this culture, that I find your experiences so interesting; the way cases are managed where you are and by who must be a lot more nuanced!

For the longest time I wanted to be a Psychiatrist but started to doubt and this whole COVID 19 blew many of those dreams away for me. I love learning about mental health and for the past 6 years being a nursing assistant at the VA I've been exposed to many disorders and other mental illnesses. So I'm torn which would be more beneficial, status for sure becoming a physician is there but I had a reminder from someone telling me becoming a physician shouldn't be the only reason to define my life in order to be successful. Make yourself think about the satisfaction you would feel when you save someone's life. You just saved a person from dying - you brought them back. Think about when you are old and retired, breathing your last breaths, reflecting on your life. That moment when you think to yourself, "I was brought into this world for a reason, and I am leaving it knowing I made a huge impact in the world" makes the tedious process of becoming a physician even more worth it.

My interest in medicine lies more in the foundational science rather than the daily practice of being a physician, which involves substantive patient contact in most cases. As such, I'm pursuing education in an MLS degree program, where patient contact is a lower proportion of the daily workload. Dealing with patients can be taxing, especially in the current anti-vaccination, pseudo-intellectual conspiracy climate. I don't think I'd consider medical school unless I'm confident that I have a good shot at, and strong interest in, something like pathology.

    _It is overhyped also because:_
*1) It is being displaced by Physician Assistants, RNs, and Nurse Practitioners*
The number of doctors is going down every year because Hospitals prefer to put the bulk of their work on workers who have lower loans and can work for less money.
*2) Much of the work is open to automation in the near-to-long future*
Since doctors don't interact with patients as much as Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, and Physician Assistants, the bulk of their diagnostic capabilities, so much dependent on what they memorize, will be automated by machines which are better adept at that ability.
*3) The student loans are extreme to get into the profession*
The salary has to justify the loans and employers know this. The average doctor has over $0.5M in school loans before getting into the profession and because of their desperation to hit a salary benchmark to pay off that principle, employers will often work doctors well near 100 hours a week because they know that urgency. On top of this, residency salaries comes from Medicare and that budget is going down every year. This translates to lower residency salaries. So while post-graduates do their residency, they can't even attack the principal on their student loans for up to 6 years after completing medical school depending on their residency. If the concern is money, it would make sense to choose a higher paying specialty with more jobs and less time needed to finish residency.
*4) Low transferability of licensed skills after Medical School*
Going to, graduating, or dropping out of medical school doesn't enable you to just jump into another medical profession like Physician Assistant, Nurse Practitioner, or Registered Nurse. Even if there is a shared skill set among these professionals, you would have to go to school all over again in the specific discipline in order to get that intended job. This means more schooling and more loans if you tried to be a doctor but want to work in a different healthcare capacity.
*5) Massive Saturation versus Job Availability*
To get into the medical field, new graduates have to often move to rural areas to serve for several years before being able to get a job in any upper-scale areas. This is because growing government subsidizing in these rural areas focuses on getting healthcare to its residents. Getting a job in an urban upper-scale area is what happens closer to the middle and end of your career. Also, because of the fewer jobs available and larger number of medical graduates every year, even competing for these rural area positions is intense. It is also worth mentioning that Private Practice physicians are going down every year as insurance companies find its they can make more money from suppressing their commercial viability.
*Recommendation:* Don't go to university and take out a loan for anything over $100,000 unless you ABSOLUTELY LOVE the profession. Being a Doctor, just as much as any other profession, needs to be a career of utmost devotion and passion. The new _"money-making"_ profession that Asian communities gravitate towards now is *Computer Science, Software Engineering, and Data Science.* This is because the salaries are high, jobs are plenty, and its still somewhat exclusive to those who are good at math and science, meaning the number of people who can do that work is still low.
I have Asian friends who work in Urban areas, have paid off their loans in 2-3 years, and make up to $0.5M working for expanding tech companies like Amazon, Facebook, Apple, Google, etc. And the jobs are growing for these companies every year as they disrupt other industries. Even a field like pharmacy has gone down substantially because of Amazon's acquisition of PillPack which seeks to centralize pharmaceutical services and send medication to people's homes.

Everything you stated in your argument as to why becoming a physician is overhyped is extremely accurate and I am glad that you are gravitating towards a more modern, realistic approach as it is crucial nowadays, especially considering the fact that physicians have one of the highest suicide rates out there. However, you must look at the major advantages of being a physician has, compared to other job fields and specialties.
Physicians are, by far, some of the most knowledgeable individuals in the healthcare field - their knowledge span is near twice as much as that of a Physician Assistant or Nurse practitioner. Yes, the debt and overall stress they experience can often become unbearable at times, but once fresh out of residency/fellowships, physicians pay it all off with their $237,000 average salary for PCPs, and $341,000 for specialists, with strong financial and money management skills. In fact, they can start paying the debt off as soon as they are in residency, by setting some hundred dollars a month dedicated to debt. You must focus on long-term outcomes.
In my opinion, the most important thing as a physician is the satisfaction and gratitude you feel when you save someone's life, after all the years of enduring the stressful and grueling process. That feeling of life reflection when you are on your deathbed and reflecting on your life, the moment that you say to yourself, "I came into this world for a purpose and I am leaving it knowing that I made a massive difference saving thousands of loves" is superior and making the entire process 100% worth it. Yes, you will struggle and fail endlessly as a physician, but the things in life that offer astronomical opportunities often come with a tedious process to reach them.

    • @Camarophobic
      @Camarophobic 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@ Reading your comments... it's clear to me that you have very little knowledge about what a physician does.
      1. Saying automation can replace the set of skills and critical thinking a physician needs to diagnose and manage a patient is misinformed to say the least... If you would take the time to talk to a doctor about how the same presenting signs and symptoms have a wide breadth of differential diagnoses that can only be narrowed down by a physician who has deep knowledge in the conditions presenting to him and knows what examinations to perform (and how to perform them) only to then be able to *efficiently* order investigations and devise the best management plan for a particular patient weighing in the risks and benefits of the treatment (again applying relevant knowledge) so as to give the patient relief with minimal side effects (sometimes a physician decides (with the patient) to tolerate the side effects for saving the patient's life)... Would this be done as efficiently and critically as a well trained physician.
      2. One of the core passions of a lot of doctors is conducting research to further understand the established and new medical conditions and to find the best ways to diagnose and treat the patients suffering from these illnesses... take for example the use of dexamethasone (an already known medication) for COVID19 cases with respiratory difficulties. Another example would be minimally invasive surgery which is a breakthrough on the surgical side... this is in response to your point that scientists and entrepreneurs are the ones who advance different areas of life
However, you made some good points but these are the ones that I thought should be discussed

100% .... I have asked many physicians this question and they told me they would've taken a different path. The glamorization of the job is not that glamorous in real life. Physicians are overworked, underpaid, and the training is way too long and costly. Most people are just after the title. I know many doctors that are insensitive and rude and always have to put on a front because of this , which makes them ingenuine. One thing I will say, we have to stop this supposed profession Hierarchy. Everyone has a different job responsibility so one cannot be compared to the other. so there's no mid level , high level x y z....A nurse prac and a doctor use two different care models so there's nothing to compare, its just preference.

There is no such thing as reward without hard work. Medicine has a lot of positives to outweigh the cons talked about in this video.
    1. You spend your life helping people in a way nurses etc do not. Life is short, and to spend a life in this way is a noble endeavour.
    2. People will always need a doctor, therefore there will always be a job out there. May not be in the specialty or region you want, but you will never be unemployed. Most people can only dream of saying that.
    3. Recession-proof, pandemic-proof.
    4. Intellectually stimulating. Always changing.
    5. Salary is comfortable. You will NOT be filthy rich as a doctor. But you will be comfortable. Able to afford some luxuries. Live in a nice house. Go on holiday. Not be in debt forever. Afford a comfy retirement. Again, things most people can only dream of.
These advantages don't come for free. They come at a cost. Tuition fees, opportunity cost, nights slaving away in your early years. Whether all of that is worth the advantages is something you have to individually answer.

I love being a CRNA. I’m definitely not a physician, but I do feel very fulfilled with my career. I honestly do not feel CRNAs will take over the anesthesia field. I work in an ACT model in a large hospital. It’s nice having the Anesthesiologists placing regional blocks in preop and also ensuring the patient is safe in pacu while the CRNAs are in the operating rooms. Makes the flow of patient care smoother and timely.

Hi. Dr.Jubbal! This is one of the BEST MD vs PA videos I've ever seen! Thanks for the time and effort you put into this. After being a PA for 20 years, I have found what you said about PAs to be very accurate. I hope this video helps students decide what they want to do. Take care!👋🏾👨🏽‍⚕️

Being a doctor is overhyped? Only small minds think so. If you don't want to be a doctor and have other passions, more power to you but if you believe that being a doctor is overhyped, reexamine yourself. Try to aim high and make something of yourself.

Google empowering patients, working more than 40 hour weeks (80 hour weeks in my case), being one patient away from being sued, hospital administrators breathing down your neck, PA and NPs having more power to operate on patients that doctors previously only had authority to do so, dealing with death and sickness on a daily basis, yeah it's a tad-bit overhyped. Yeah society needs more doctors but im never recommending people I care to go into it.
Yeah my paycheck is great but I never have the time or energy to spend or enjoy any of it. low key regretting entering the field, especially after covid

Would you consider making a video about telemedicine? Perhaps a day in the life of telemedicine physician? Or discuss what can we expect with the future of telehealth? Do you think the need for telehealth companies will grow and drive up the need for physicians? It’s something I’ve been curious about lately given the covid situation. Thanks! :)

Well, in my country, most of the ppl generally hate doctors, for a lot of reasons. Besides this, the salary is below every other job that requires college/university. There are towns that has no doctor in it, but it should, because there is not enough doctors. Fun fact I live in central Europe...

I'm in highschool but my school offers a program to get an associate's degree. I'm currently doing the program while doing HS classes so I can go to a four year university as a junior. I realized this year I want to be a doctor. I know it'll be hard but I want to be a doctor. I was thinking about being a primary care physician or a gastroenterologist

Some medicines cost hundreds of thousands of dollars for a single bottle. This is why health care is so expensive. The pharma companies need to earn money because these drugs are expensive to produce and manufacture. They are still not greedy. The us economy dictates the salaries of doctors, they don’t make up their salaries.

Hey Kevin, love the videos and the work you and all your colleagues are doing at Med School Insiders! This may be a bit of an off topic suggestion, but I’m staying at a relative’s house, who happens to have a pool lol 🏊🏻‍♂️ , and I was wondering if you could do a video on hypoxic training, or just training in general, to increase endurance and lung capacity on land or in water. Thanks in advance, and keep up the great work! 👍🏻 P.S. I’ve always wanted a road bike! 😉 haha

Can you make a video on how to set up companies to build medical technologies? I’m a med student and interested in combining engineering and medicine. Please give an insight on the options available, considering how AI technologies like IBM Watson is helping to improve the efficiency of the doctors. Thank you! :)

Took me ten years to get it. I am borrowing a ton of money and probably staying in Europe where doctors don't make that much money and it will take forever to pay it back. I have 4 years left and studying can be boring.
But I am so grateful most days that I have the opportunity to do it. :)

It's true that us European folks have it easier than Americans. I'm just glad i live where i live, because i'm not sure if i would still be able to or want to pursue medicine if i lived there.

I'm currently deciding between graduate or medical school. I'd like to do both clinical practice and research work for a living. In about two years I'll need to make my decision. Once this whole pandemic is over with, I'll begin shadowing doctors at a nearby hospital to see if medicine really is the right path to choose (it's been my dream since a little girl, but over the years I've had second thoughts about it, about the process of becoming a doctor, if it's really worth it). I always hear people say: "if you can't imagine yourself doing anything else, go for it!" But what if I can? Does that automatically put medicine in second place?
