An there is actually a card that deals damage for the number of words in target creature's name, so you have an awesome combo there.

I think you mean Wordmail, which for only one mana gives a creature +1/+1 for every word in its name.
Making it a +25/+25 for 1 on Our Market Research Shows That Players Like Really Long Card Names So We Made This Card To Have The Absolute Longest Card Name Ever Elemental.

Loved Hypnotic Specter especially when played turn one. There's always been something so horribly satisfying about forcing one's opponent to discard at random.

So, I haven't played in a while sadly, but when I think of Magic I instantly think of Niv-Mizzet the Firemind(one of my 1st cards, and built a deck around him when I was little right when that set came out), that card holds a special place in my memory.

My favourite card is tied between camel and tasseled dromidary. I am going to make a modern camel tribal aggro deck called flying camels. My friend won a draft with tasseled dromidary when it was a 5/9 flyer with vigilance which inspired this deck.

When I first started playing I learned with my friends cards. But when I got my own cards the best (my fav) card I got was KARN SILVER GOLEM!!!
    I loved the art.
Artifacts (at least the ones I had) weren't great back then so I had trouble building a deck around Karn but he still saw play as a great wall/attacker if it is open.
Crazy that Karn was your first Rare as well. P

Felidar Sovereign will always have a special place in my heart. Along with being an amusing way to win EDH/Commander games through hate bears/control so you are able to find a way to take no damage and win, it's 4/6 Vigilance Lifelink for 4WW, which isn't awful and is pretty durable. I remember playing a game of EDH with three of my friends, and I cast Felidar Sovereign and because everyone else was so caught up in stopping one of them from ramping into hundreds of golems (he had an absurd golem deck that ran all the splicers, doubling season, parallel lives, and growing ranks, so it could get a stupid amount of golems in at an unbelievably quick speed), no one addressed my felidar until it got back around to me and I won.

It has to be Thalia, Guardian of Thraben. I played competitive MtG for one standard season and loved my GW Humans by heart. The biggest opponent for me was of course control decks and cheap interaction, so forcing my opponent to pay more mana than they have to was my saving grace. I am a cheap creature enjoyer to this day whenever I pick up MtG.

The deck you talked about for #3 reminded me of one of my favorite decks of mine. It focused on morph and bounce effects, including plenty of self-bouncing to re-play my morphed creatures after they'd already been turned face-up (whether to re-use their triggered "when turned face-up" abilities or to just play a shell game with my morph creatures)

  • @09Dragonite

My first two pack rares were Knight of the Reliquary and Master of the Wild Hunt. Both are excellent cards, and I've always wanted to build a modern deck that featured one or both of them if possible. However, my first precon rare was Denizen of the Deep, and in that precon I happened to open up an Arcanis the Omnipotent. Arcanis really struggles in modern right now, but he is such a cool card! As for the Denizen, I don't really care as much for it save for the nostalgia. The year that Tenth Edition dropped I also got the Kalonian Behemoth precon and the Shivan Dragon precon. Between all of them though, the Behemoth was my favorite. As for my personal favorite card, I believe it is Teleportal. I love to swing in for game, I don't know why but my favorite mechanics are combat tricks and Teleportal is an insane enabler. It allows damage to be pushed through and the artwork is absolutely stunning! I also feel that the card is quite flavorful because of the idea that a teleportation machine could push creatures through a wall of defenses to strike immediately. It is simply an efficient enabler, and I would like to see it played more.

My favourite card is endless ranks of the dead. It's a silly 2BB enchantment from innistrad, which creates X 2/2 zombies each turn, where X is half of zombies you control. I remember a game, where I had literally thousands of zombies, with four of the ranks in play. The problem was that my opponent had a one guy with "can block any number of creatures" and "negates combat damage". Both of my doomblades were somewhere in the bottom of my library, so I lost the game and won an awesome memory.

My favourite card is sorin vengeful bloodlord. I got him in one of my first ever packs and built a deck around it. It is now a brawl deck, and is my favourite deck, I just love gaining life and then playing cards like bolas's citadel or loxodon lifechanter and annihilating my opponents. I also like skitter eel as it creature types are kind of a meme in my playgroup. One of my other favourite decks is a kitchen table jank simic proliferate deck with it fblthp and sharktocrab known as the UnitedCultOfFishCrab.

For some reasons, I've always loved TAP abilities (because it gives the sensation of having something similar to moving/living objects/robots), adding mana of every color (with TAP abilities), and pumping creatures (especially with static whole-side ability). That's why I instantly loved Slivers and later Elves (like Wirewood Channeler) and Soldiers (Daru Warchief and similar)

My favorite card is Metalwork Colossus, I run an artifact deck for standard (sadly it will go out of standard come october) and his ability coupled with my deck being able to constantly pump out things like prophetic prisms and other non-creature artifacts makes him an absolute beast that can come out as early as turn four. And with cartouche of knowledge and ambition I can pump him up even further and give him flying and lifelink.

I started playing right before 4th edition came out. I went to a local shop to see what cards they had. There was always a common box and then there was a glass case with the rares in it. I saw a particular rare and had to have it. I saved up and bought it. I soon acquired another from a friend that acquired a collection from someone she knew that quit playing. So now I have 2 Khabal Gouls! I’m very partial to them because of what they do and when I got them (still in my Magic infancy). They don’t see much play because I can always find something better to take their place in a deck. When I do use them, t I use them as a distraction as they are usually the first thing targeted and it allows me to get other things in the board.

Cool I started in fourth edition and quit in the last set of urza block, with Sylvan library being my first rare. I constructed a land destruction deck, that I've kept for years (decades) until recently (2018) I played it w customers (I own a bar) and realized it didn't age well, but went back to playing. Mostly edh now, at my bar twice a week. With an equip (mono red) and an elf deck in modern, that both win by turn 4. And half a dozen budget edh decks :)

I loved Phyrexian Processor. I used to run it in a green white kitchen table deck that had a lot of life gain and all the circles of protection and after gaining a lot of life and preventing it's loss with the circles I could start chugging out 5/5's, 10/10's or I even once did a 20/20 per turn for five mana. My friends never quite knew if they wanted to save their disenchant for one of the circles of protection or one of the life gain enchantments or the processor itself... fun times

My favourite Card is "Flickering ward".
1 mana permanent protection against a color is great. But being able to return it to the hand for 1 white is glorious. FW is the mother of almost all auras (unless that aura grants hexproof or shroud)

I loved Marton Stromgald for much the same reason you love Karn. I opened him in the first pack I bought, an Ice Age Starter pack (back when these were the only way to get lands). I knew the basic rules of magic by then, and the thought of attacking with a huge board and getting a quadratic effect off of it just blew my mind.
Wonder how many people here would even know that Marton Stromgald existed, let alone remember what he does.

im relatively new to magic, so the most fun I ever had was bringing a 5 color standard deck to a PTQ and going 7-3 with Sylvan Caryatids and Axebane Guardians. i LOVE sylvan caryatid, the hexproof basically made it a confidant, safe, turn-2 play every time.

Karn is an 4/4 Artefact creature for 5 Mana which has Bushido 4

Close, but Bushido 4 would have been "gets +4/+4 until end of turn" rather that "gets -4/+4"

  • @Smecksee
    @Smecksee 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Oh geez, so much to choose from. I started playing around 7th edition, and I remember my friend always loved killing me with Rhox or Thorn Elemental. (Understandable. Couple of fatties that hold up even today. :) ) Of course Planeshift soon came out, and Terminate became an instant favorite of mine. I've also got fond memories of Pariah, Goblin Grenade, Devouring Strossus, all sorts of things. And we can't forget the classic commons. Llanowar Elves, Lightning Bolt, Counterspell, Dark Ritual and the like have always remained some of my favorites. Too many favorite cards to name, but these days I get a lot of enjoyment out of taking cards that are thought of as mediocre, and then trying to maximize their potential. For example, I really like how the cards 'Mystic Genesis' and 'Jace's Ingenuity' are wonderful if they're both in your hand. Somebody playing a big spell? Counter and get a fatty for it! Nothing worth countering? Draw three cards instead! They're conveniently of the same mana cost too. No need to spend your available mana on your turn. You can wait to see what your opponent is going to do, then act accordingly. :)

    Favorite enchantment: Cloak of Confusion
    Favorite creature: Waterfront Bouncer
Favorite removal: Spinal Graft (combo with death watch and anything that can target creature)
    Favorite instant: Boomerang
When I was young I didn't pay much money to play magic, all I bought from the card shop in my whole life was 4 packs I got armageddon and jokulhaups which I sold them. Because of this my decks are mostly consist of commons and a few uncommons discarded (literally) by people in the card shop, I played none of the rares even though I got a few, including a time vault (not played mostly because of its banned status).
My favorite deck is a blue-black control deck that is built around the first two cards from above. It is designed only good for 1vs1, and it can be very confusing for my opponent until I completed the lockdown combo, where the opponent can't do anything and have his table completely wiped of permanents, with 6 key cards:
Cloak of confusion (usually enchant on Cloud spite)
    Waterfront bouncer
    Counterspell
    Scrivener
    Recoil
    Rishadan cutpurse
Clearly this deck don't play too well against burn decks, but most aggro/combo decks popular at the time had such a bad time playing against it. They only realize my deck's win condition once I keep them top-decking and recovering the counterspell over and over, slowly removing their permanents one by one (usually they will concede before having no hand and no permanents). During the time there was no permanent that can withstand this complex combo, rishadan is slow to remove shrouded permanents after I take care of their lands, but I have curfew and diabolic edict too to deal with aggro decks. It was completely anti-meta, fun and complex to play but not so fun to play against. If they can't kill my 1/1 creatures fast enough they will lose the game, very slowly as I prioritize permanents and cards in hand before opponent's life to ensure no comeback is possible.

Karn!!!!! Like yer vids, I'm old and only played casually with my friend who taught me back in my teens in the 90s so when I bought some cards of my own at a garage sale I was super stoked to find Karn Sliver Golem in there. But I have trouble naming an absolute fav. Probably #1)Demonic Tutor (cuz I worship the Devil. like all MTG players did back then)
#2) Prodigal Sorcerer. My Blue pinger deck was unstoppable back in the day. Just eat damage till you can get 2-3 out then it is over. Makes all their blocking/attacking choices impossible cuz the extra damage can go anywhere. And if you don't make me Tap them they go to yer face at the end of yer turn. Got a couple boosters years later and got 2 Talon of Pain that made my Pinger deck even crazier!
    #3) NIGHTMARE!!!!!
    #4) Bury
    #5) Fireball
    #6) Venom
#7) counter spell UU to say "nope" to their big summon or 9 mana fireball was great!
#8) Armageddon Land destruction is highly underrated! And if you can wait a turn or two or otherwise make sure you will have land drops the next couple turns it's game over.
#9) Fallen Angel. Love the art, love the effect. Love biggish Black flyers.
#10) Starfish. Like the art. Looks harmless, but after the third or fourth time it chump blocks a big and puts another 0-1 token into play people start to hate and scheme to get rid of it.
A card a both love & hate; "Dromar The Banisher" If I had one I would absolutely love it but as it turns out I don't have one & my friend who taught me to play & was almost the only person I ever got to play did have a Dromar and loved to play it. God I HATE that card/secretly covet it.
Have a nice life! Or at least try to. And certainly don't prevent others from trying! P

I forgot about Fog. I love that stupid card. It has won me more games in edh and pissed off more people than I can remember... Nothing quite breaks the spirit of an opponent that can't get damage through because of a one mana "stop it now" button.

ensoul artifact, that was the card that (sort of) held together my azorios vehicles deck, it op and I love it, also caught in the brights which also dose wonders in control vehicles, rishkars expertise, sunbound, brimaz (first mythic) kalitus, daretti ingenious iconclast (first walker I pulled or owned and the only reason I still have a rakdos artifats deck) see the unwritten, part the water vile, sliver hive lord (even though I never played him) oreskos sun guild, arcetype of imagination,

Don't really know an exact Top 10. But I do know that all 3 original Eldrazi Titans (the Annihilators) would be on there. There was something so satisfying about ramping up into those and just watching your opponents board disappear.

One does not simply pick favorite cards... I asked my brother to mention 20 cards he associates me with, then I picked 10 of them.
10: Magical Hacker (good for Planeswalkers and my brother's Green decks)
9: Invisible Stalker (good with Artifact equipment)
8: Sleep (when I first got into Magic in January 2015 I thought it was super broken)
7: Jace, Ingenious Mind-Mage (I like how he can draw you cards or give you borderline Vigilance)
6: Propaganda (slows down mana ramping and aggro decks)
5: Jace's Phantasm (great 1/1 flying for 1, with a little bonus later in the game)
4: Lighting Bolt (do I really need to explain why?)
3: Jace, The Mind Sculptor (yes, I'm that guy)
2: Vampire Nighthawk (there's no reason to run him as long as you're running Black)
1: Jace Beleren (when I was first getting into Magic in January 2015, my brother said, "I was gon'na buy you that card but I didn't have enough money, you should buy it..." so I did)

I started playing right when The Dark was being phased out and Fallen Empires was going on line. I really enjoyed the art of Fire Drake specifically, but boosters for The Dark were always more expensive than fallen empires boosters. Needless to say, I bought waaay too much fallen empires and have little to show for it.

Despite having fallen in love with competitive Modern strategy, for sentimental reasons, my favorite card is probably Catacomb Slug. It's just terrible, but it's one of the first cards I ever used and it reminds me of a time where my friends actually liked playing Magic with me. A close second would have to be Novablast Wurm. It was one of the first huge creatures I saw when I started playing Magic, and I loved the short and simple "destroy all other creatures." I had planned to build a deck of small humans that tapped for mana all for the express purpose of getting out Novablast Wurm so they could see their deity come to life only to wipe them all out. As much as I love blue/white control I find it hard to say I have a favorite card for it. Restoration Angel is very fun to mess with but I can't say it's one of my favorites. I hate to say it, but Karn Liberated was one of my favorite cards to use. I absolutely love artifact decks, and Karn was one of the coolest powerhouses I've ever used. His ability to control boardstate so easily led to my love of control decks. Of course this also leads to my wishing I hadn't have gotten into competitive Magic, otherwise my friends might still play it.

I wouldnt say that era was the last time a LD deck was viable in standard. Granted the deck i ran when Alara and Zendikar were standard wasnt technically LD but an esper deck running spreading seas and convincing mirage with a side of tectonic edge and ardent plea/kathari remnant/deny reality/enigma sphinx to get there against all the jund running rampant in those days might as well have been turn 2 LD lol

I run conjurer's closet in my yasova dragonscale edh deck. Jeez... I lost a friend once by permenantly stealing all his eldrazi titans by voltroning up yasova then stealing his eldrazi with yasova until end of turn and then blinking it with the closet and then permenantly keeping his stuff. if I didn't have closet I would just fling it at him for 10 to 13 damage. Yasova Dragonclaw May not be my favourite card but she's in my top 20.

Takklemaggot is a very interesting card, he eats your opponent creatures! How cool is that!
Unfortunaly it's text is (as it's usually the case in old cards) ...poorly worded. I imagine you must have been flooded with questions about how it works, especially if your opponent have a hexproof or shroud on the table. I think it would be great if he was reprinted.
