I have this, the older green version, for at least 10 years and used it extensively. It works really well and i made a lot of dowel connections with it. Once you are skilled with this tool, nothing beats the speed and precise working.
I just bought this jig and been wanting to use it and your video was a great demonstration on how to use it. You managed to show all three types of connections very nicely, good job.
Great explanation, much easier to follow than the Wolfcraft video for the dowelmaster I saw! Interesting to see you drilling the first holes on the horizontal, most videos I have seen have the first holes in the vertical axis.

Great tutorial. I have one of these cool jigs, and it does work extremely well. I also have the "dowel it" jig which is great for edge to edge joinery. The only thing I have to say, and this is not a criticism, is that you keep referring to the Milescraft doweling jig as cheap. Maybe you should say inexpensive. When one thinks of cheap, they think of (at least I do) something that is poorly made and will not last. Even though most of the material of this jig is plastic, it is a high density plastic, and should last years if taken care of. This jig in my opinion is an indispensable, inexpensive little tool that everyone should have in their tool arsenal. Thanks again for the great tutorial.

I just got my Milescraft 1319 a few hours ago and I was so frustrated with their instructions that I gave up on doing what I have planned to do however, after watching multiple videos I bumped into your and I will give it another try tomorrow. I really enjoyed that you took the time and explained how to do the measurements for all three types of joints. Thanks for the video.
I have just purchased a wolfcraft dowel jig (apparently, the old version) which is pretty similar to this one. As the new improved "wolfcraft dowel master jig" is on the market and my version is the "older" one, nobody has made a video for it .Your video was a massive help. Thanks for a good, concise video.

I've had one of these sitting in a drawer for over a year, never bothered with it. Watched your video once and made a flush test joint on the first try. Thanks!
I think a work around for smaller stock is using that centering line, it just may be tough to hold against your workpiece, but add an extension piece next to it for balance.
Your centering can be solved by taking a wider board and drilling and installing one dowel. Then put your fence on and adjust it so it's setting the depth. Now take it to the board you want to use it on and use the fence to put it to center and drill the hole(s) where you want.
One other thing, for the broken pin, just use some super strong epoxy with an accelerator. Hold it down for a few minutes and you should be good. Most epoxies work really well on plastic parts like that.
I broke the pin too when I dropped it. I fixed it by applying a bit of pvc cement. Make sure to dry fit it before putting on the glue so it's still accurate
A dowel jig can be just as fast as a domino and is a lot less expensive. Plus you can make different sized dowel joints easily and cheaply. Fast sting and effective, dowels are a under appreciated method of joinery.
I would recommend looking at the supplied drill bits closely before trying to use them. Mine were quite wobbly which made the dowel holes bigger and reduced the precision when joining.
Good job on the video it was just what I was looking for. I actually bought the same jig last year. Now I’m finally planning a project where I need it. Maybe I’ll tie string to it and hang from neck so I won’t drop it. If you think you will do a lot of dowel joints maybe it would be worthwhile to step up to a metal one.
Two sets of drill bits makes sense ... but what we _really_ need is just single additional bits. I know I can get individual twist drill bits (for metal, and less precise wood work) on cards at my local Ace Hardware store, but I have never seen brad point bits for precise woodworking there. The only way I know to get the collars, though, is to buy a full set ... bummer.
I used it and you dont need center pins acctually, so there is no width limitations really. Just mark center where you wonna pin to be and drill by eye centered pin. It will be 99% accurate.
I just got my kit from Amazon yesterday today went to use it was going great and knocked it off my 36in high work table to concrete floor and snapped one alignment ear off smooth at base. This jig is user friendly after a small learning curve but its not durable by any means.

Yes, you /can/ use the fence to center the holes in the end or edge of a board, but it is much less precise. The geometry of the pins and holes on this and similar jigs ensures that the dowel hole WILL be centered on the end or edge of the board. However, neither the pins or the fence help if you want to edge-glue one board to the face of another. However, edge-to-edge, end-to-end and end-to-edge are the most frequent ways of using dowels - precisely where these jigs are most useful. The other way to locate the "other" holes is by using "dowel centers". That is the way I learned in high school shop class in the mid-1960's. A dowel center is a metal device that has one end sized for a perfect fit in the hole, and has a perfectly centered point on the other end. They are usually available from woodworking suppliers in sets covering the most common dowel sizes. Once the dowel holes are drilled in one board, the dowel centers are inserted and the other board is pressed up against them. The dowel centers in the first board make pinholes in the other. The pinholes mark the centers of the holes to drill. You still have to manually drill the remaining holes perfectly square to the surface and to the correct depth, but at least you have a precise place for the drill bit tip.Doing it this way is necessary if you want to edge-glue or end-glue one board to the face of another.
Great demo, mate, 👍🏽 bummer that you dropped it and broke the peg off. How did you go with contacting the company, get a replacement? Maybe the issue with the minimum width of board, one work around that should work to get evenly spaced holes not too close together, is to clamp another wider board to it so it extends the width for better jig positioning? Can't hurt to give it a go, it should work, well, in my head it does! 😆😆😆

I also dropped mine and broke off a peg. I used a small machine thread bolt to reattach it and it works fine.

I am trying to butt joint 2 x 3 with dowels. This wouldn't work right?
