This is awesome! 🔥 It was so much fun shooting with you guys☺️
You are amazing Ellie, can’t wait for your video to come out
nice
😅
You're a very beautiful model and so natural
never mind which lens。
Thanks for having me bro! Was a fun day out :)
Bro thank you, was a trio of a life time, frothing for more of your Japan content,
Thank you for having me and really enjoyed hanging out with you guys!! I’ll see you in Aus:)
Buy tickets let’s goooo
I use prime lenses more often but I love the result from the 24-70 zoom in this video.
Yeah like primes are great, but zooms are the best option for run and gun
@@gerardneedham Gerard, do you complement you 24-70 with any primes? Maybe something for low-light situations or when you really want to get that razor DOF or compression that background even more? P.S. Love your channel. Greetings, from NYC.
I always think I want to buy a zoom for that convenience and wide-med-tight shots-but I know that it would just take my favourite lens off the body. Love my 35 1.4. I still do that, but just with my feet.
Yeah bro, a 24-70 doesn’t replace primes, having a 24-70 and a wide angle prime like a 24mm or 35mm is the go. Because you don’t get much separation at 2.8
Zoom lens looked better tbh just because the composition didn't justify F1.4. Trees and branches look bad when overly blurred in my opinion, and bright splotchy highlights dominating the bokeh also looked off. It just had no flow. F1.4 shines when the highlights are small and bright like streetlights, or when there are large textured objects in the background like mounatains but at a dimmer brightness than the subject. Good demonstration.
Yeah f1.4 is a bit much for me
I vary between both primes and zooms. I love my Sony 24mm 1.4 GM and TAMRON 35-150 2-2.8 lenses!
Oh my that tamron is a beast
To be honest, I like the zoom lens. Maybe because I can see the environment also. It's like if I go somewhere for travel I want to take a portrait, and also I want to that I was there.
yeah the 24-70 is the one lens I always bring
I think one of the best combo ever sigma 24-70mm + 85mm 1.8 or 1.4 great content! 👌 keep it up 🙏❤
Oh 100% I love my 24-70 and 85mm
Missing those shallow dof 24mm shots though
I have 24-70/4 and 35/1.4 and 100/2.8 macro, all from canon... after several years with these lenses... the zoom has nice range, but f/4 limit me a lot... 35mm is perfect focal length for 80% of my work, but f/1.4 makes background too blur, only the 100/2.8 is absolutely perfect... so f/2.8 is enough for me, so now if I buy the system from the beginning, I just purchase 24-70/2.8 and 40/2.8 pancake for lightweight trips and the macro also... so prime only for some special value: size or macro capability :) but definitely not for aperture...
Yeah f1.4 can be too much on above a 50mm I do like the look on a 35mm tho, that’s all just personal preference
I love primes but my love for zooms came back when I bought the canon 28-70 f2 it replaced all my primes except for the 50mm f/1.2 😅 great comparison guys loved it
Oh yeah I just used that lens with the nee canon r6 mkii, loved it, review coming soon
I think they are perfectly good I love zooms and primes depending on my situation I find myself on primes more but zooms when I'm feeling lazy but I usually carry them in my bag
Yeah if you have time I shoot primes but I just use my 24-70 like a prime I just set it too 35mm
To my eyes bokeh is not everything, is more important than a bokeh to leave more context about location. To my eyes bokeh eats great composition possibilities.
Yeah 100%, having an 85 prime in a busy location is a good option too. But if the location looks nice then a shot at 24-35mm at 2.8 looks good or even 5.6, make the photo like an iPhone view. Also, for video depth of field isn’t cinematic, Majority of a film is shot with high F stop
If ever you want to have a redo of this, it might a better comparison if both photographers shoot her at the same time, in the same spots? That way we have more controlled variable to make the comparison even more noticeable. Nonetheless, I enjoyed this!
Yeah the idea is more about creativity rather than the gear
@@gerardneedhamWell, you wouldn’t know it from the title of the video…
Great videos guys!
And I agree on zooming with lens instead of feet can happen with zooms. After shooting with primes for 2 years when I do portraits now with a zoom I tend to pick focal length for a desired look and move around with my feet. Really trying to treat it like a bag full of primes.
Also I really like working for my shot with that 2.8 after the past 2 years leaning on shallow dof.
Saw you all both picked up a xt5 and primes combo recently👌 have used it the past year and I love it so much. Hope you all are enjoying yours 🤜✨🤛
again great videos gentleman
The XT5 is awesome!!!!
I wish zooms had a click at the major focal lengths like at 28,35,40,50 ect the lens with click into that position
@@gerardneedham so agree!
Good Video, absolutely see a place for both. Agree that the difference in sharpness is much less now a days. Definitely prefer zooms for events and travel, and for portraits hard to beat an 85mm f1.4.
Yeah the 85mm slaps
What I got out of this was 24mm 1.4 & 85mm 1.4 for Photos and 24mm-70mm for Video shooting
That’s fair, video can be more run and gun. But so can photos. It’s really comes down to how often you have to change lenses
I hear you. That depth of field trade off in light of taking a solid quick video at different focal length convinced me I just need all three 😂
This video has helped guide my decision in purchasing a lens to start out my photography/film career. Thanks Gerard. Great video.
Great to hear!
Which lens did you buy?
@@Itsarali_ordered a Sigma 24-70 f2.8
@@Itsarali_ Sigma 24-70 f2.8 DG DN ART Sony E-mount
Beautiful 🤩 beautiful 😻 1- 85mm And 2- 24-70 ! But Prime Better! 😊
Yeah 24-70 to my grave ahahahahh
At (5:25) I would’ve definitely love to see you use those nice shadows with lines going down through the windows. Still nice though
Great idea!
Great video and work. I'd much rather shoot two bodies with a 28/35 and 105. Each time I look at my 24-70 shots, I sigh. You can shoot primes stopped down and they will still look nicer than zooms.
Yeah it’s all about preference and how fast you need to shoot.
Great comment mate
Great video and awesome shots from both of you! I enjoyed seeing how you got the most from each lens.
I have a 24-70 2.8 and 70-200 2.8. I am considering adding a prime to the bag. Would you recommend a 50 or 85 to compliment the zooms? I’m torn with the 85 being better FL for portraits but the 50mm a bit more versatile.
I prefer 50mm for portraits over 85mm, it’s a better working distance from the model, and is a more environmental lens and like you said very versatile. Sony ZEISS 55mm f1.8 and the sigma 50mm f1.4 are 2 lenses that I have and they both work great
I am deciding on 2 different scenarios either a 35 or 50mm 1.4 together with a canon 70-200 is ii. Or ill go with a Sigma/Tamron 24-70 and a 85 1.8, choose for me i cant decide
I think 24mm 50mm combo works great with a telephoto
Great video, but the full comparison it would be great to see the low light setting.
My aps-c is fully equipped with primes and now I’m assembling FF. Here i wouldnt need FF at all.
If I buy a prime vs zoom, than its also because the better low light performance
Yeah I feel the same way, zoom 90% of the time then primes when it gets dark
i think one issue is you are a better photographer than the other guy so its harder to judge but it was a great video none the less, thanks!
Sad to the bro Mitch, he actually has way more experience and knowledge, and has basically taught me everything I know including style. But art is 100% subjective!
Thanks for the support
4:48 while primes make you need to be more creative with your positioning, zooms make you need to be more creative with the background you're choosing!
It's a give and take.
For me the main thing primes have as an advantage is the better low light performance. Because even too much bokeh can start to feel boring and monotonous.
I just bought a 24-70mm and will be testing it soon!! 🤞 I really hope I like how it does cause it was Expensive!
Smooth post, fast paced comparisons - side by side images tell the story. Manufacturer also a factor - likely can’t generalize, IMO. Cheers!
thanks man, sony plus sigma glass all day tho
This makes a strong case for the 24mm 1.4. On the long end i'd be good with a 2.8 or 4 zoom unless it's dark like at a club gig.
Yeah they have there pros and cons
@@gerardneedham gotta collect them all... for me though 24+85 and a 24-105 f4 with stabilization and "macro" covers pretty much everything. Nice that we have that for lumix now, both the 1.8 ones and sigma 1.4.
My genuine request, If you wanna shows us comparison, and then it should be ditto same position of model. We can't make conclusions sometimes because of positioning and placement differences.
I think try not to look at the scientific data, like sharpness and depth of field, try looking at the creative decisions when using a prime lens, or a zoom lens
Thank you for the video! 😊 I’m planning to get a Zoom lens and considering the 24-70. Would you recommend this lens for travel (videos/photos)?
Yes, definitely, it’s pretty much a one lens solution
love your video man! after using much prime lenses during travel, carrying tons of lenses around, finally decided to get the 24-70! btw, what lenses did you used to record this video!? It looks so gooooddd
Awesome man, definitely a one lens solution. I’m not too sure what we shot the BTS on maybe the Sony 20mmf1.8
Samww beo
Same bro i have decided too
Cutting off the hands and arms, and too much of the legs. This is why it's important to make your composition count as much as the exposure and focus.
Composition isn’t a hard rule, it’s a creative process, same with exposure
@@gerardneedham unless your cutting off people's hands.
😉😁😄😂🤣
Hello, thank you so much for the video, could you put the original pictures here to help me compare those lens better?
Hey man send me a dm and I’ll send them tru
ok I have an irrelevant question :) what did you use to film this video? thanks in advance
A7iv
Hi, I loved this video, but I need to know your idea, I am a nightsky photographer, do you prefer two prime lenses (i mean 50 and 24) or one zoom lense (24_70), thank you in advance
If your shooting at night with out flash, definitely primes
@@gerardneedham tnx a lot
I have to say the prime lenses look way sharper even in a compressed TH-cam Video. Could be the grain adding some feeling of sharpness or something else in editing. Might also be the slightly more blurry background creating some contrast of sharpness. But I have to say the prime lens looks was more sharp in this video.
Totally agree, I’ve been thinking about this the last few weeks and I think primes just have that contrast pop. Even at the same f stop as a zoom they just look better some how
4:25 whatever this lens and body combo is for this video footage is a match made in content creator heaven. What was it?
Sony A7iv plus the sigma 24-70
@@gerardneedham Wow! Look like I need to grab that ASAP to go with my 24mm and 40mm F1.4 lenses. Looks absolutely incredible. I'm going to go ahead and order your color grading stuff as well. I love the look of this video.
Helped me so much for choosing the lens thanks a lot man♥️from India 🥰
Happy to help!
Nice pictures! Were they post edited or natural?
Could you please share what focal points you selected and also was it one shot or AI servo?
24, 35 and 85 for the primes and then the zoom was 24-70mm. All set to AF-C so continuous autofocus

Good to see another photographer/ content creator out in Japan! Make sure to suss the camera shops when you are here ❤
Oh yeah we did, video coming soon
The editing of the zoom are better but I prefer the separation of the primes.
Thanks bro, but I don’t think one photo is edited better than the other, fully just different style. I actually brought Mitch’s presets before I meet him and they are really really good.
@@gerardneedham you might not think so, but the zoom edits are better regardless. The prime edits look dull and not exposed properly. It’s not hating at all. Just the way it looks to me
Yeah me and you might like my edits better while other people like Mitch’s edits more, that’s what’s so cool about art

Thank you 🙏
awesome video it what I'm looking for
Glad to hear it!
Cool guys looks like Japan or Korea 📸 great work
It was in Tokyo bro, place is epic for portraits
@@gerardneedham Awesome keep up the great work.
Prime lens has the best detail sharpness and dept of field more. Zoom lens has more many lens inside making the distortion and blur when you shooting.
Distortion is from small lens elements so it does depend on the zoom lens and a lot of primes have small rear elements which results in a lot of distortion, this also results in vignette, resulting in less sharp corners even after profile corrections
The biggest difference for me personally is the background render, as zooms can have pretty messy bokeh compared to primes
85mm !!! the best :)
Indeed it is! Goes hard
impressive 24-70 beautiful pose and shat... make the photos interesting even u have the prime if you dont have the nice pose or passionate ur photos will not be great ..
100% comes down to your style

@@gerardneedham when you are a Pussy maybe yes! The quality of Prime lenses are unmatched! My Sony Zeiss 55mm 1.8 or 35mm 1.4 GM are light af!But nothing can fuq with my Sigma 105mm 1.4!!!
Yeah but to get the complete set you’ll need a 24,35,50 and 85. If you get all f1.4 then most are about 400-600grams so that’s like 2kgs compared to 800grams or say each lens is from sigma, $800 - $1100 usd, then that’s about $4k vs. $900 USD.
