Henry Barnill I only watched one or two of the movies, but the original TV series a couple decades ago I watched on Netflix back when DVD rentals were still popular, had no idea who the guests were but I thought it was fun.
About Tex Richman's song, they actually cut out most of it in the movie. In the extended version of the song, it explains more about his character and why he hates the muppets.
+MegaSoulhero i love that song... I own the CD and I can't stand that opera bit it seems just out of place for the rap but when that song comes on when I am watching the movie I can't help but bob my head and sing along
+MegaSoulhero Actually, I kinda like how out of nowhere and pointless his song is. Maybe it's a weird opinion but I loved how sporadic and quick the song goes, almost as if he just Richman just wanted his own song sequence just because everybody else got one, I love how it ends as if nothing ever happened.
+megasoulhero glad someone else noticed that, cause that part of his backstory is resolved at the end of the movie but since it wasn't brought up in the song no one notices.
I'm so so SO happy that Doug loved this movie. I find it incredibly inspiring that a film directly about rebooting the Muppets turned out to be (in my humble opinion) the best Muppet movie of them all.
+Oswald The Lucky Rabbit as a forgotten Character yourself do you think the Muppets have a real chance for a comeback in the Modern Era, I mean with two new movies and a show what are the odds.
I know a lot of people don't like him and he doesn't have the best design but I personally really like Walter; not really sure why, I just do. I was actually kind of disappointed that he was left out of the new ABC show.
"Everybody's ripping off Malcom in the Middle these days" translates too "I have never seen The Middle so I am basing this assumption off of name alone"
+Simon Williamson It is, but not as much of one as some would be lead to believe. I do feel the quality of the show has degraded has time goes on though, while Malcolm in the Middle was consistently fantastic the whole way through.
Considering I grew up in the time period Doug described where the Muppets weren't so popular (with their most recent movies at the time being Muppets from Space and their Wizard of Oz parody), I never really cared for the muppets as a kid. From a distant perspective they kinda creeped me out and I preferred the friendlier and more prominent sesame street gang. But then this movie came along, and I finally gave in to their charm. I realized what made them so great in the first place, and started watching more and more of their work online and on TV. I can easily say that I'm a muppet fan now, and it's all thanks to this movie for reminding me there's always to sides to a coin.
I loved this movie when it first came out, though I have to admit I kept thinking while looking at the trailers and posters, "Oh no, they're going to be ruined." I was so happy to be wrong! I loved the jokes, I loved the moments, I loved the songs, I diehard loved the fourth wall jokes, and I loved how this was just a resurrection of characters I love whom I thought had died out. I'm kinda surprised how the Critic didn't talk about Jack Black being in the Muppets. It was a big deal for me because I'm not a huge fan of his comedy (other than Kung Fu Panda), but good grief he works so well with the Muppets! I was laughing every moment when he was the guest star! On a personal note, I had seen some of the Muppet movies at home, but when this came out I did not expect quite an audience. Old and young people were there! The older people were coming to see something they grew up with and the younger audience came to see something interesting. It just felt like a way to unite generations. They were smiling together, laughing together, and I remember walking out of the theater and two teenage girls were singing "Manamana". I still treasure the memory of it anytime I watch this movie.
"The Muppets" is great comeback from the good old days created by Jim Henson. I really enjoy this movie because it's great to see these original muppets and it was pretty entertaining musical. I guess because they want to remember "The Muppets" and this is why they didn't so well from the past? Oh geez, at lead the second one didn't do well and I didn't catch this TV series because I'm way too busy for watching many shows, but brings me back some good old times to see these funny muppets for going in a colorful rainbow. It didn't great and I'm glad that new creators did it so well to brink back for nostalgia fans and to new audiences that what is this "Muppets" is all about. Overall, great comeback and I love it.
Well a lot of what they were doing was TV movies between Muppets From Space and The Muppets (like Muppets Wizard of Oz) and there were a couple Disney Channel specials called "Studio DC Almost Live" which had the Muppets interacting with Disney Channel's sitcom stars of the time
When I first heard about this movie, I was a little bit nervous. I still watch the Muppets & stuff (like the 2000s TV specials, commercials, web videos, etc), but I was still nervous about how this would end up. Literally with every behind-the-scenes photo, every trailer, every new clip, I went "Oh my God! It's like Jim came back!" & when I saw it opening night, it CLEARLY didn't disappoint! 2:00-2:23, yes. Yes, it did. But I wouldn't really say where was a lot of "modern humor", it still felt sort of timeless. 2:23-2:59, I wouldn't really say I was crying, but several times, just when I think they pulled their big cards out, they pulled out a bigger one. They show Pepe in the commercials constantly but he's just in the movie for 30 seconds. THANK YOU! You think the old random bg Muppets would just be in the background, but no! They get lines, Link Hogthrob sings in the barbershop, Thog gets stuck in the arches, Wayne & Wanda make out, they actually used them! They're about to do the classic Muppet Show intro, but what happens before? JERRY NELSON, one of the original Muppeteers, gave an announcement! My brain exploded into awesomeness when I heard his voice! 2:59-3:09, no, I think Rainbow Connection was mostly nostalgia factor & possibly the second best version of the song after Jim's version. 3:09-3:13, oh, boy, are you gonna get a lotta hate-mail. Lemme make this clear Doug: the Muppets have been nominated at the Oscars, but have gotten screwed each & every single time. THIS time, they WON! 3:13-3:19, I wouldn't really say that. The puppetry was good, but there wasn't really that much of a wow-factor. There was some stuff, but they mostly kept it simple. Most Wanted had more of the wow-factor with the puppetry. I didn't really see that much of a combo anyway. Thank GOD for no CGI! 3:20-3:32, that's always been the greatest strength in ANY Muppet production: the amount of dedication & strength the puppeteers give these characters is all their own & even when they're in interviews with the puppet on their hand, we still believe they're real. 3:35-3:56, you can blame Disney for that one (like so many of the Muppets current problems). Cooper's rap was to explain why he hated the Muppets, but Disney decided to go Star Wars Special Edition & say, "Nah. It's not worth it." The full song is on the Blu-Ray & that gives the rap purpose. 3:56-4:20, I wouldn't say "unimaginative design", he's supposed to look simple. In fact, he looks a little bit like Ernie's simplistic design (only more expressive) Well, hopefully with the revival of the ABC show, they'll finally bring him back. & I wouldn't say he's a bland character either. He's supposed to represent the die-hard Muppet fan in all of us; the way WE would act if WE had this sort of experience. & yeah, those kinda characters are bad, but it worked here. If they had Rob Lowe or whoever they originally had to voice him, it wouldn't have worked, but his puppeteer, Peter Linz, IS practically Walter (huge die-hard Muppet fan) & that made it click. Besides, I'll take Walter over Pepe anyday! 4:20-4:55, again, blame Disney. They had a totally different ending, but Disney forced them to change it. There's only one big problem &, again, it's something from Disney: they just HAD to release it on the same day as BREAKING DAWN PT 1, DIDN'T THEY?! It's like Kung Fu Panda 2 vs Hangover 2 all over again! & what do you know?! People saw Twilight instead of this, beat them at the box office & Disney lost faith in the Muppets once again! & they did the same thing with the sequel!
The ending symbolises the impact that the muppets left on everyone in the United States and how special it was to them, it's the shock on Kermit's face that brings that together. He didn't know that they were really that big and with him finding that out, I frankly think it's perfect.
The only problem I have this movie is the fact there are so many Disney ads in the movie, I remember being a Cars 2 poster in the city, but this is still a great movie and it even made me become a muppets fan.
I'll admit my favorite part of this film was always the song "Am I A Man Or Am I A Muppet?" (one of the reasons being because I've always enjoyed piano ballads).
Ever heard of Scott Galloway? One of his books "The Big Four" explains how Amazon, Google, Facebook, and Apple created their insanely breakable monopolies by tapping into human needs (Food, God, Love, and sex respectively) With that said there's obviously a fifth: Disney. Although I can't decide which human need they fullfill.
I don't get it. Why does everybody say that the Middle is a ripoff of Malcom in the middle? The only thing I see what they have in common is the word middle in their title. Besides that the characters, ton, story telling and atmosphere are completely different.
The one thing that's often overlooked about this film is the fact is the films plot was previously used for A Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie that NBC produced back in 2003... The similarities here explain it all... muppet.fandom.com/wiki/Similarities_between_It%27s_a_Very_Merry_Muppet_Christmas_Movie_and_The_Muppets
I think Muppets will never truly go away. They have a certain charm. However, the copout at the end was pretty horrible. I wish they hadn't done that. I think my favorite scene is with the kid from Modern Family. XD
The one thing that really bugged me about the movie was that Miss Piggy and Kermit were together. One look at the classic show and you'd know that that's not how it's supposed to be.
I never really stopped watching the Muppet movies so when they had that as a plot point I was actually surprised. People don't like the Muppets anymore?
I will admit, when this movie came to theaters, I deliberately did not go see it. I LOVED the old Muppet movies, I love these characters and I DID NOT think they were going to be able to re-capture what made the Muppets so special and unique. My God, was I wrong. I remember stumbling across the scene where Kermit and the gang sing Rainbow Connection in this movie and I realized that the Muppets I loved were still there. And this is now one of my top 3 favorite Muppet movies. I had to pray to Jim Henson and beg his forgiveness for doubting his characters. lol And I do agree with the Critic about the ending.....it was a brilliant movie, but I think the ending would have been much stronger and more profound if they HAD realized they didn't make the money but Kermit made his beautiful speech that they were still a family and they were together and they would fight there way back to the top. THAT is what the Muppets ARE.....even when the situation looks impossible they will be fine because they are a family. The way they did it just made it look cheap and contrived.
I've actually never watched any muppet thing all the way to the end, even as a kid I found this handdoll thing Childish. I knew they existed and they showed muppets Christmas Carol at Christmas time every year, but I never saw it. I'm 31 years old now and here to see if i can find out how Animals quote from Disney Heroes sounds like. "Animal! An! Ni! Mal!!!"
so the full tex richman song goes into why he hates the Muppets (which more or less is cause he cant laugh, which is why when he gets hit at the end and can laugh that is significant), but for whatever reason the song was cut short so it does feel a little like just a way to fill screen time
2:32 That is not why I was sad, and crying. I cried because Jim Henson was not alive to see it. I believe he would've been so proud of this movie and it breaks my heart that wasn't around to see it.
+InfamousJJ The hate is annoying, its basically the old muppet show without the sketches, the same backstage drama is there. Sure the characters might be a little off, but its still a great muppet show.
The thing that threw me off a bit from the new show is that they drink alcohol but that was just a nitpick still feels weird everytime when they are at the pub.
+Boyoftrick_90 Well, they sometimes drank in the Jim era. Not all the time, but there were a few mentions & on-screen sips. Heck, the ending to the Peter Sellers episode was a song named "Cigarettes & Whisky & Wild Wild Women"!
i also loved this movie! honestly i didn't even know it exsisted until one dy my mom and friend said "we're gonna see the new muppett movie" i thought sure why not not really expecting this great film!
I loved Jack Black in the muppets. It was like the role of Animal’s sponsor was made for him. They could’ve gotten anyone but no they got Jack Black. And it’s makes me laugh so hard every time I watch the anger management scene
Im really sad i didnt get the Muppets when it ran on tv as a child, that might have been part due cause i didnt understand English at such a young age, and i thought every show in live action was cinematic fecal matter. Nowadays i always get excited whenever i see theyre airing one of the movies or the show on tv cause i know how great they are!
0:00-0:16.; Is that supposed to be the buildings in Chicago rather than the Walt Disney castle in the introduction?... That's what it seemed like, to me because just like The Nostalgia Critic, I live in Illinois, as well.
first of all Man or Muppet ended up WINNING the best song Oscar (because somehow there wasn't that much to nominate then, it was up against the song from Rio which was unavoidably Catchy) I mean the one gripe I have is that Life's a Happy Song didn't get nominated (but it SHOULD HAVE it's just as unavoidably catchy as the song from Rio, or do I dare say DUCKTALES) Walter has just been like relegated to the background, when the show comes back I hope we see a little more of him. Rip off Malcolm in the Middle? yeah in which they also ripped off in She's a Good Skate Charlie Brown
when Kermit is singing that sad song at his house and he couldn't bring himself to look at the painting of Miss. Piggy I wept like a fucking baby! I had no idea they would be able to get to my heart like that but bloody hell they managed it.
The muppets are so obscure these days people mistake sesame street for the muppets. Sure they used puppets made by Hanson, but it wasn't 'the muppets'. My favorite characters in the muppets are the 2 wise cracking old geezers.
The funny thing in This movie is that in one commercial Kermit was telling us ( Brazil ) his real name, because around here he was always called Caco, I think It was 'cause It rhymes with sapo, wich is frog in portuguese, I Just found It funny
Also when Rainbow Connection was done, it felt like everything was right in the World again (I mean hey why not, the Muppets were relevant again, Bin Laden was out of the picture, and the NHL Jets came back.....okay everything felt right in the world for me but still)
The song sequence with Chris Cooper was originally longer, and also explained why he hated the Muppets. I believe it's on the soundtrack, as well as an extra on the Blu-ray
+andrewkful Yes. It should have only been a pilot to the show that turned out to be really good, but not, they had to do a movie that was worse than Attack Of The Clones.
even though I haven't seen any of the newer Muppet movies, from what you've shown and talked about this one, it really is similar to Muppets Take Manhattan- which is my second favorite Muppet movie. My top pic is tied between Christmas Carol and Great Muppet Caper. In Manhattan the muppets were unknown, fresh out of "college" I guess, and were struggling to get onto Broadway and make a name for themselves. Here, people have just Sort of forgotten them. And so just like Manhattan after they've had no luck getting anyone to do their play, they're out of money and decide to go their separate ways. I'll have to give them a rent and check them out sometime. :)
+D.C. al Coda Yeah, the Muppets have been screwed at the Oscars for years (not Rainbow Connection or Jim Henson's Time Piece?), but FINALLY, it felt so satisfying to hear they won!
+ZNKChannel About Time Piece, I wouldn't say screwed over, considering the fact that Henson himself voted for another short that he thought was better.
Let's face it: something inside us cheered when they did the muppet show theme song again
+Ben Wasserman It was hearing Jerry Nelson as the annoucer again.
I started singing it in the movie theatre
it was awesome
+Ben Wasserman Not only was I cheering, but I was quietly singing along in the theater!
+Ben Wasserman I teared up at the Rainbow Connection. Anyone else?
I cried during Rainbow Connection. No shame.
Same here.
nope
@Evil Savage Stingy You'd be heartless not to
good
Damn bro, me too
That Kermit song about him deciding whether to help get the gang back together got me tearful, that was such a good scene.
Do You Want To Like The Muppets?
Henry Barnill I only watched one or two of the movies, but the original TV series a couple decades ago I watched on Netflix back when DVD rentals were still popular, had no idea who the guests were but I thought it was fun.
+Loyal-TF-Fan _ It was a reference to Frozen's "Do You Want To Build A Snowman". I know it's random but both songs made me cry.
I cried, and I didn't even grow up with the Muppets.
About Tex Richman's song, they actually cut out most of it in the movie. In the extended version of the song, it explains more about his character and why he hates the muppets.

Maybe it's a weird opinion but I loved how sporadic and quick the song goes, almost as if he just Richman just wanted his own song sequence just because everybody else got one, I love how it ends as if nothing ever happened.
And I think its pointlessness is cleverly pointed out by Kermit when he says
“Well you could of just said that”
+megasoulhero glad someone else noticed that, cause that part of his backstory is resolved at the end of the movie but since it wasn't brought up in the song no one notices.
Like how they removed The Love is Gone from Muppet Christmas Carol?
Yeah gary was adopted
+Lord Vader That's strange.
they looked like twins.
No crap
I didn't know Lord Vader watched Nostalgia Critic.
but they look exactly the same
Huh? Gary?
Plot Twist: Gary is adopted, not Walter.
We do never see the parents...
Oh My God
Maybe one parent was a human and the other was a puppet
@@someinternetdude8959 that's what I think.
@@kylemorello4787 thanks for agreeing with me
Jack Black seems to fit in perfectly with the Muppets maybe a bit to well. Makes me wonder what him and Cage did in their spare time.
Amy Adams tho.

To be honest:
In the barber shop scene when Beaker pulled out the axe.
I was very surprised.
"Nominated"?! That song *won* the Academy Award!
Did anybody else notice that they named the new character that brought the Muppets back together after Walt Disney?
+Trisket No. No they didn't. That's like me saying The Penguin was named after me.
+Oswald The Lucky Rabbit as a forgotten Character yourself do you think the Muppets have a real chance for a comeback in the Modern Era, I mean with two new movies and a show what are the odds.

No

Ever heard of Scott Galloway? One of his books "The Big Four" explains how Amazon, Google, Facebook, and Apple created their insanely breakable monopolies by tapping into human needs (Food, God, Love, and sex respectively)
With that said there's obviously a fifth: Disney. Although I can't decide which human need they fullfill.
Darth Kermit can now be cannon
I don't get it. Why does everybody say that the Middle is a ripoff of Malcom in the middle? The only thing I see what they have in common is the word middle in their title. Besides that the characters, ton, story telling and atmosphere are completely different.
Erich Scheidle It’s more similar to Roseanne besides I like it better than Malcolm. Malcolm feels more like a live action Family Guy or Simpsons
The song, "Man or Muppet", actually WON best song. Made me stand up and cheer when it did.
XD
I loved how they had a call back to Treasure Island when they had Tim Curry In the background during the moopets scene when fozzy Is signing.
The one thing that really bugged me about the movie was that Miss Piggy and Kermit were together. One look at the classic show and you'd know that that's not how it's supposed to be.
Thank you for getting that. :O
I never really stopped watching the Muppet movies so when they had that as a plot point I was actually surprised. People don't like the Muppets anymore?
How dare you diss the middle Critic that show is awesome
Looking forward to your review of Cinderella as the nostlagia critic.
+Disney65Fan Oh yeah, that movie was this year completely forgot.
The song that was nominated for an Academy award one that award
+bayoufilms *Won
I quite like the retcon at the end, it's almost done in a way that they acknowledge how half assed it is. I actually laughed pretty hard at it :)
Even they say Chris Cooper's song was unnecassary.
I had to pray to Jim Henson and beg his forgiveness for doubting his characters. lol
And I do agree with the Critic about the ending.....it was a brilliant movie, but I think the ending would have been much stronger and more profound if they HAD realized they didn't make the money but Kermit made his beautiful speech that they were still a family and they were together and they would fight there way back to the top. THAT is what the Muppets ARE.....even when the situation looks impossible they will be fine because they are a family. The way they did it just made it look cheap and contrived.
This was actually my exposure to the Muppets and I'm so glad my parents dragged me to this when I was 12.
"Animal! An! Ni! Mal!!!"
And I'm here like "OMG! R.O.B. is in a Muppet movie." Love the film just as much now, btw.
so the full tex richman song goes into why he hates the Muppets (which more or less is cause he cant laugh, which is why when he gets hit at the end and can laugh that is significant), but for whatever reason the song was cut short so it does feel a little like just a way to fill screen time
This was actually my first ever muppet movie, and I loved it! I thought it was a pretty good introduction for new fans
Just noticed Manny from Modern Family makes a cameo XD XD
I know there was plenty of muppet movies before but when I saw this one, I actually enjoyed it.

That is not why I was sad, and crying. I cried because Jim Henson was not alive to see it. I believe he would've been so proud of this movie and it breaks my heart that wasn't around to see it.
Really good review. I honestly think this might be my favorite muppet movie. I still cry when I listen to Pictures In My Head.
Walter's biggest dream wasn't to BECOME a muppet, it was to meet the Muppets
I wonder what he thinks of that new "Office" Muppets TV show. It's pretty funny, to be honest.
+InfamousJJ he does point out the dissaperence of Walter.
+ZNKChannel "They'll drive you crazy. They'll drive you insane." *bangs on a drum*
i also loved this movie! honestly i didn't even know it exsisted until one dy my mom and friend said "we're gonna see the new muppett movie" i thought sure why not not really expecting this great film!
I loved Jack Black in the muppets. It was like the role of Animal’s sponsor was made for him. They could’ve gotten anyone but no they got Jack Black. And it’s makes me laugh so hard every time I watch the anger management scene
I love the intro music you have so much
Im really sad i didnt get the Muppets when it ran on tv as a child, that might have been part due cause i didnt understand English at such a young age, and i thought every show in live action was cinematic fecal matter. Nowadays i always get excited whenever i see theyre airing one of the movies or the show on tv cause i know how great they are!
0:00-0:16.; Is that supposed to be the buildings in Chicago rather than the Walt Disney castle in the introduction?...
That's what it seemed like, to me because just like The Nostalgia Critic, I live in Illinois, as well.
this movie will make you cry your eyeballs out with nostalgia from the '70s and that Jim Henson (who created your childhood) is dead.
I always cry when kermit sings pictures in my head :’(((
To me Life's a Happy Song is a much better song I thought that was more deserving of an Oscar
first of all Man or Muppet ended up WINNING the best song Oscar (because somehow there wasn't that much to nominate then, it was up against the song from Rio which was unavoidably Catchy) I mean the one gripe I have is that Life's a Happy Song didn't get nominated (but it SHOULD HAVE it's just as unavoidably catchy as the song from Rio, or do I dare say DUCKTALES) Walter has just been like relegated to the background, when the show comes back I hope we see a little more of him. Rip off Malcolm in the Middle? yeah in which they also ripped off in She's a Good Skate Charlie Brown
okay Walter hasn't really been relegated in the background as he has shown up in Muppets Now!
*GASP* He mentioned the middle..I thought nobody watched that show...My favorite show...
I wasn't even born yet when the original muppets where around but I love them any ways
when Kermit is singing that sad song at his house and he couldn't bring himself to look at the painting of Miss.
I for one LOVE Muppet Treasure Island. Tim Curry makes that movie something special.
The villain's rap was cut from all but one channel I saw it on.
I do love that they recognise the fact that the muppets became unpopular in real life and make it part of the plot
The funny thing in This movie is that in one commercial Kermit was telling us ( Brazil ) his real name, because around here he was always called Caco, I think It was 'cause It rhymes with sapo, wich is frog in portuguese, I Just found It funny
I love this movie.
You forgot to mention the chickens dropping the f-bomb. I nearly pissed myself laughing when I realised what had just happened in a U rated movie.
I completely forgot that Rashida Jones is in this.
I loved this and Muppets Most Wanted. I really want Disney to make The Muppets 3!
This movie has a simple formula: Muppets + Blues Brothers = MASTERPIECE!
No Clone Wars? Ok...
+Franciszek Rychlewicz Was that in theaters?
That's not Disney
+andrewkful Yes. It should have only been a pilot to the show that turned out to be really good, but not, they had to do a movie that was worse than Attack Of The Clones.
+Ryan “The Crossover Deliverer” Martinez It was in theatres though
+Zebitas Martinex It's not Disney.
Really loved this movie, even without a lot of knowledge of the muppets.
Isn't this movies Plot almost exactly like a very merry Muppet Christmas? I still love this movie :3
even though I haven't seen any of the newer Muppet movies, from what you've shown and talked about this one, it really is similar to Muppets Take Manhattan- which is my second favorite Muppet movie. :)
I never knew how unpopular the Muppets were… I always loved them!
I know I loved most of the muppets movies
+iamclassicforlife It was more people were done with them. Or thought they were.
One song was nominated for an Oscar? I believe the phrase you're looking for is "won an Oscar".
+D.C. al Coda It was like one of two songs nominated that year and it was so pitiful it made them fix the nomination process again
But you can't deny that it was a pretty good song, regardless.
D.C. al Coda Oh I know!
+D.C. al Coda Yeah, the Muppets have been screwed at the Oscars for years (not Rainbow Connection or Jim Henson's Time Piece?), but FINALLY, it felt so satisfying to hear they won!
+ZNKChannel About Time Piece, I wouldn't say screwed over, considering the fact that Henson himself voted for another short that he thought was better.
