Agreed. So many fans who bash Hot Rod/Rodimus Prime (Jon3pnt0, ShartimusPrime, etc.) just choose to ignore that aspect and pin the blame entirely on Hot Rod. I personally find Hot Rod/Rodimus Prime is overhated.
Also, as much as I like Optimus Prime, I much prefer Rodimus as a character for three reasons: He actually has a personality instead of being stoic all the time, knows he will never live up to Optimus, tries to be a different kind of leader, and is young and makes mistakes which makes him more of compelling character. In the end, I would have much preferred that Rodimus stay leader after the movie, as blasphemous as that sounds.

Grimlock was comedic enough in Seasons 1 and 2. Didn't dig the direction they took him after the movie; it kinda felt like fan-service going wrong. S01 &02 are amazing. 3 is okay. The movie is one of the best animated movies I've EVER seen! Prowl's death still gives me nightmares.
I actually thought his and the other deaths aboard the space shuttle were like a trial run by the decepticons, they were so sudden. Also, after the line by starscream, “much easier than attacking the REAL threat”. In my mind, no way had they killed the 4 of them off so nonchalantly. Prowl was my favorite!
Something I feel should be talked about with the movie is just how much Hot Rod did not earn being the leader. Optimus intended for Ultra Magnus to take over, and from what we see of the movie, he would have been a better choice since he displayed actually displayed the ability to be a leader. Hot Rod was just arbitrarily made the chosen one, after he almost got himself get rushing into a fight with Megatron that Optimus was on the verge of winning, and Kup had warned Hot Rod to stay away from. With the third season, while we see some of Rodimus doubting himself, it was a bad case of intent versus execution. To be frank the show spreading its focus out among such a big cast meant that it was impossible to give him the time and focus in order for him to get the kind of character arc he needed. The season started off with Rodimus ditching the impulsive attitude he had in the movie with no explanation, something that would have made his struggles to be a leader a lot more interesting. But even then we only had a few episodes that focused on his struggles with being a leader. In all honesty this idea of having somebody replace the main hero was something Reboot would do much better with its third season. The show's hero Bob was written out not because of a careless mistake by an ally, but because the main villain Megabyte finally got the better of him. Bob's replacement Enzo was a character who had been around from the beginning of the show, and had been proving himself much more capable as hero as the show went on. Even then he had to really work to earn everyone's acceptance as Bob's replacement. That was something Rodimus never did. His mistake that got Optimus killed was never brought up again, we don't even see him haunted by the guilt over it.
@@Werezilla That was an interesting tidbit I didn't notice, but now that you pointed it out I did notice that Grimlock generally becomes friendlier with everyone else as the show went on. Unrelated with that, while I respect your opinion on preferring the Quintessons as the Transformers' creators, I do feel there is one area where that origin stumbled in the show. It explained that the Autobots wanted peace because they were built as consumer goods while the Decepticons wanted conquest because they made to be weapons. Essentially the show said that the Decepticons were born evil and the Autobots were born good, even though we had members of factions switch sides in previous episodes, including Five Faces of Darkness with Blitzwing, a Decepticon. That I feel the show could have done without, especially since it's impossible to reconcile that with the backstory we got in War Dawn.
@@Werezilla I will state in Rodimus' defense that while his actions in Fight or Flee were bad, he's far from the only Autobot who had a dick move he's not called out for. Optimus once approved of a plan to mind control the Constructicons. He and the other Autobots in the infamous B.O.T also stood by and did nothing as an innocent person was duck tapped and dragged off. There is also Metroplex in Thief in The Night. Grimlock brings up the "Dinosaur transformation static" or whatever it was called after Fort Knox was stollen, and Metroplex puts the Dinobots and Sky Lynx through a kangaroo court on a baseless suspicion that one of them is the culprit. That is arguably a worse move than Rodimus blowing up a planet, Metroplex went and accused his fellow Autobots of a theft they had no motivation for based.
Nice retrospective. Still, I kinda liked you tackling less known part of the franchise that no one else touches. I still hope you'll look at anime like "TF: GO" or "TF: Robotmasters"
@@SailorMoonFriends Don't bother watching the English dub, it's terrible. The Japanese voice acting is superb, the subtitles are easy enough to follow. The Headmasters series has character arcs, deaths, rebirths, an epic finale, Wheelie, etc. Plenty to enjoy!
@@SailorMoonFriends You aren't missing much. The show itself is a huge disappointment compared to the original 3 seasons. Takara clearly didn't learn any lessons from the superior American writing style or have any respect for the past. It does almost nothing well besides having much less animation errors.

Rebirth is a true ending of g1 for me . I hate those Japanese sequels.
