  • Last year we visited Nungarin as part of a trip. low and behold we discovered they had an army museum, which we had never heard off. We knew about the one in Merredin and the old Army hospital but didn't know anything about Nungarin. As it turns out Nungarin was the largest military base in Western Australia during World War Two, 5BOD (or 5 base ordnance depot) was built in 1942 in Nungarin so it would be out of the reach of Japanese warplanes and had good links for rail and road to disperse. It was a vast complex with massive store warehouses, workshops and storage areas for tanks and other military vehicles and equipment. Driving around the town and surrounding countryside you can still see heaps of remains, rusting tank hulls, vehicles and then of course you have the actual museum itself.
But not only does it show military vehicles and items from WW2 it also covers the civilian life and farming equipment from the same era.
In the museum there are several fully restored and operational vehicles and equipment, but I think the best thing is that they will let you get inside and onto the vehicles themselves, so if you ever wondered what it was like go along and have a poke around.
If you happen to be in the area around March then keep an eye out for their heritage rally and searchlight party where they have some vehicles running around, fire up the WW2 anti aircraft spotlight and make a real weekend of it.
Anyway if your into history, military history, or just enjoy poking around old stuff then wander out and take a gander.
