Of course it's debt never went down, just as ours hasn't, instead the GDP grew with growth and inflation and that huge debt became something not worth worrying about - the same joke Mike Myers made with Dr Evil demanding 100 billion dollars in 2010 and getting yawns.

    Basically, the government doesn't "borrow" money. It prints it. It owns the balance sheet. So we owe ourselves if you want to look at it that way. It's really just a measure of how much the economy has increased in size.

    • @seigeengine
      @seigeengine ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's an oversimplification, lol. The nation can just increase it's money supply, but it devalues it's currency to do so AKA causes inflation.
      It borrows money from both domestic and foreign entities. Domestically these are purchased because they offer interest, so are better than cash, and are essentially the most stable store of value in the world: basically, if the government stops paying the interest, it's because the US has collapsed, and if the US collapses, that's a global catastrophe.
      Foreign entities generally buy them to secure a stable inflow of US dollars.

    • @ThomasFromTN
      @ThomasFromTN ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But the level of the national debt is not the culprit. Greece's response to inflation in the period depicted in this piece was objectively the worst response it could have adopted - to stop spending or borrowing entirely, opting instead to adopt an austerity economic policy, that made there economic climate exponentially worse. The analogy would be if someone's primary mode of transportation that got them back and forth to a job broke down...and the person's response was not to invest in getting the car fixed. Yeah, spending and borrowing slowed...but so, too, did any viable options for sustaining receiving a paycheck from a job now lost. The long run benefit from investing in car repair (keeping a job) outweighs the immediate cost (investment) necessary to secure reliable transportation necessary to keep the job.
