Oh my gosh, Buff Orpingtons were the sweetest most tame chickens we’ve ever had. They love to be held and cuddled and want to be with you. They’re like dogs lol.
I love my Orpingtons. I've got 2 lavender and one huge black one. I'm adding 7 new chicks this year and will have 10. After much consideration, I've decided to get 1 golden comet, 2 olive eggers, 1 welsummer, 1 black australorp, 1 wyandotte & 1 speckled sussex. Chicken math is for real 😁
I’ve got some Easter eggers for the first time. They’re pretty chunky and they lay some cool looking eggs, so you’ll get diversity in both your flock and your egg basket.
We have a couple of easter eggers. The eggs are blue which is really cool, but they are not the best layers. They do have wonderful, friendly personalities though. Buff orpingtons are very friendly as well.
My Buff Orpington’s are the sweetest birds in my flock and great egg layers. Also have Easter Eggers, good layers and love the green/blue egg color. I live in Northern Wisconsin and have found both breads to be winter hardy.
Our bluffs are the sweetest and quietest birds! Even my toddler can interact with them, they are such a wonderful addition! Easter eggers are fun with the colorful eggs, and they are silly looking chickens too that are fun to watch.. wyandottes are personally some of our worse chickens weve ever had, they have been fast, flighty, and mean... they are pretty, but they have some attitude so be aware of that...
we loved Golden buff Orrington..these hens for us kept laying eggs 🥚 during the fall & winter, the numbers slowed, but we still found some eggs. and the hens made good mothers.
Dude, forget about those guys. Get some salmon Faverolles! You can tell the males from the females within a week (males will have black flight feathers while females have light feathers). They’re big, hardy, good layers (180-240/year), and HILARIOUS. They just have really funny personalities. Not overly social but they’re known to be a very kind breed that will sometimes befriend low ranking or injured birds. They have fluffy cheeks, beards, and feathered feet with extra toes! If you must go with the ones you mentioned though, everyone loves Easter Eggers and Orpingtons so they’re up there but Brahmas are definitely a personal favourite of mine. They run around like big fluffy tyrannosaurs but then they’re just so gentle and I find them to be very curious and quick to adapt to new things. We had one who would follow you to the ends of the earth if she thought you had a bucket with food. We taught her how to jump through a hoop for buckets! Ultimately it’s hard to go wrong with chickens though so whatever you get will be great.
Mottled Houdans are a personal favourite of mine. They’re a threatened breed that’s similar to Polish chickens with their afros but they also have muffs, beards, extra toes, and they get bigger on average.
Americana‘s give blue eggs and when you mate them with other birds you get Easter eggers. I want more buff Orphington because of their gentle personalities.
My blue laced red Wyandotte is beautiful, but not very tame. She lays good eggs though. So if you want beauty and eggs, there’s that. I would personally get more barred rocks though, they are so lovely.
@Earth, Nails & Tails yeah they lay extra large eggs. I have some vids of them and Bielefelders on my channel if you want to see them. Bielefelders are 11-13 lba and lay 200 per year also
We have Easter Eggers, Wyandottes, Buff Orpingtons, Brahmas, (to name a few). I’d consider all of these and don’t discount Speckled Sussex or Black Sex Links. All awesome breeds!
Only 2 of those are decent egg layers lol the others are more meat with a side of eggs breeds and usually go broody in warm season. And they don’t lay when they’re setting or raising chicks
I would recommend picking breeds known to be calm or friendly that also do well in your climate. If you’re not starting with a ton of space I would avoid any breeds that don’t handle confinement well. They have a higher chance of getting bored and becoming bullies but if they have space and enrichment then it’s not a concern.
Whatever you do choose, check on the broodines of the breed. Chickens don’t lay while broody. Had a buff Orpington stay broody 6 months out of the year and stop laying in the winter- good eggs while you get them- long dry spells though
I started with Rhode Island Reds. My new girls are mixed all that you mentioned ex spy for Orpington’s. The brahmas are getting huge, but are central giants. The whynandots(?) are pretty smart but a little bullying to the frizzle and salmon frivols (?) oh corse everyone picks on them I opted for am austrolorp and i regret that I didn’t get 2. Kinda a loner, but coming around.the Easter Eggers and olivee ggers haven’t started Laying yet, but are starting to get the fuzzy butt that says it coming.
Consider Australorp. Coloring is great and behind my leghorn get more eggs then from my Orpingtons.
All of those are great! My all time favorites are the Orpingtons in any color.
Australorps
Oh my gosh, Buff Orpingtons were the sweetest most tame chickens we’ve ever had. They love to be held and cuddled and want to be with you. They’re like dogs lol.
Rhode Island Reds. They get along with Buff Orpington and Barred Rock.

The Australorps are soooo awesome and very sweet! We have a few and love them!!!
Yes, an example of chicken math! lol
Love my buff orpingtons. Super sweet birds.
Buff Orphington’s
I’ve got some Easter eggers for the first time. They’re pretty chunky and they lay some cool looking eggs, so you’ll get diversity in both your flock and your egg basket.
Orpingtons get broody which can be good or bad depending on your needs. Legs horns lay like crazy. Brahmas are dumb but lay in the winter.
We have a couple of easter eggers. The eggs are blue which is really cool, but they are not the best layers. They do have wonderful, friendly personalities though. Buff orpingtons are very friendly as well.

My favorite is the buff orpington they lay a good amount of eggs and they are very friendly
I can vouch for Easter eggers too. Sketchy birds but good. Not pretty but good.
If you like fluffy butt sweethearts I vote for the buff orpingtons, they're lovebugs and very huggable 😊
My fav is Cochins. But you didn’t say that one so nevermind. Lol. They aren’t the greatest egg layers but they are the sweetest chickens anyway haha

Lots of Buffies.👍
Salmon Favorelle, and dark Brahma are my favorites.
Blue cochin. I had the sweetest one until she was killed by a stray dog. She laid through the winter pretty good too.
You should look into threatened heritage breeds from the Nature Conservancy lists
Mottled Houdans are a personal favourite of mine. They’re a threatened breed that’s similar to Polish chickens with their afros but they also have muffs, beards, extra toes, and they get bigger on average.
Easter eggers

Easter eggers are the best❤️

Bielefelders are great. Easter egger also good. cinnamon queens great layers
Never heard of the cinnamon queen!
@Earth, Nails & Tails yeah they lay extra large eggs. I have some vids of them and Bielefelders on my channel if you want to see them. Bielefelders are 11-13 lba and lay 200 per year also

Silver laced Wyandotte chickens would do good
Only 2 of those are decent egg layers lol the others are more meat with a side of eggs breeds and usually go broody in warm season. And they don’t lay when they’re setting or raising chicks
I'd go with Buff and Easters. IMO, the Buff lays larger eggs...
Black Australop
beilifeldera are a German breed and are very hardy I would get some of those
Which breed would be best for a beginner? I don’t want to do anything wrong. I haven’t gotten them yet.
More important to prevent predators climbing over/under their coop/pen especially at night. I haven't noticed much difference in care between breeds.
Yes having the right setup is most important. But it depends on where you live. However I would say Rhode Island reds are a great 1st breed
The only thing you can do wrong is keep waiting. You learn by doing.
I've got the Sapphire Gems and they are pretty too
Buffs
Add Orpingtons, Austrolorpes & Wyandottes. Oh and some Delawares
Add 4 of each
Buff orp gives the largest eggs. Got barred rock, wyandotte, easter eggers.
Whatever you do choose, check on the broodines of the breed. Chickens don’t lay while broody. Had a buff Orpington stay broody 6 months out of the year and stop laying in the winter- good eggs while you get them- long dry spells though
great advice, thank you!
