I found this by accident and it is amazing. As an oil painter who is terrified of watercolour , this tutorial has actually made me want to have another try . This guy is brilliant. Thank you.

I am an avid learner of the watercolor medium. I like the loose style of Alvaro, Zbukvic, Tim Wilmot. Tim Wilmot's demos have been a great source of learning. Alvaro and Zbukvic don't really teach much in the public domain that can be watched for free. This demo kind of brought everything together in a way no one has ever explained before. Hats off to Andy. Saved it to my favorites.

Hi, in case you are interested to catch a Zbukvic or Alvaro demo, you can try the "Colour in Your Life" (Graeme Stevenson) channel - I believe they have at least 1 of each & maybe 1 of Zbukvic, Alvaro & Herman Pekel together (3 amigos). Good luck!

I've seen only 1 Andy Evansen demo before this & that I had to buy ... so it's a wonderful surprise to find this gem here ... all free!! And I'm surprised that it has such few views ... Andy is not only one of the best watercolorists today, he is also one of the most sought-after instructors .. & here, he shows why. Thanks, Prescott Community Television!

I think over the years this would have to be the best Watercolour painting tutorial I’ve seen. Andy is a delight. His running commentary is gold. The clear way he explains what he is doing and more importantly why , is often lacking in many other tutorials . His talk at the end about his experience as an artist and what it takes to be professional is fascinating . Love his work.

I had never heard of this guy until yesterday when Eric Lin from the Cafe Watercolor channel interviewed him. From there, I checked out his website. His gallery pieces impressed me. Then this video came up as a suggestion. I would never have watched it had I not watched Eric’s interview and subsequently checked out Andy’s gallery. His lesson about seeing shapes, and values turned on a light bulb for me. I will practice his technique and hopefully loosen up. I’ve been painting for a year and am still tight as a drum. Great video!

OMG this is a really really good lesson for a beginner watercolor painter like me. I needed someone like Andy to show me the rope about the starting process and mindset on how to plan your painting. His method of doing a value study really helps me to understand how I should approach a painting when laying down the first and 2nd wash. Thank you so much!

Brilliant video - and I've watched hundreds over the last five years! Some great tips/insights and a nice bloke to boot. I even enjoyed the chat at the end. Thanks for the OTHER reason for doing a tonal study to paint from i.e. to not end up trying to copy the photo. It explains why folk like me like find it easier to 'copy' paintings by impressionists rather than reproduce images from our own photos - they've already removed the detail!

Andy… you just turned on the lightbulb in my brain. I’m always asking how do painters think about approach and the overall plan before they paint. But I usually don’t understand what they’re doing because they don’t explain. You’re brilliant and you are an absolutely wonderful teacher. Thank you thank you. Can’t wait to try this approach. My dream is to take one of your workshops!

Andy evansen, great tutorial: if I may comment, as a fellow artist. At art fairs and studios, I noticed that the most interisting paintings were the ones where the artist held the most focus, in the center, or on the most important subject in the painting. with the sharpest detail. especially if your drawing boats, trains, cars, etc... but, your the artist I"im just a pee on!
