"If a man walk in the woods for love of them half of each day, he is in danger of being regarded as a loafer; but if he spends his whole day as a speculator, shearing off those woods and making earth bald before her time, he is esteemed as an industrious and enterprising citizen."
"As if a town had no interest in its forests but to cut them down."
It is a grand juxtaposition that I have done both. What a life to live as a man with a heart for nature growing up and living in the timber industry of Oregon. It has gained me a unique perspective to say the least.
@@kevinostberg1729 I have had a similar experience
"And I resolved, accordingly, that I would give them a strong dose of myself."
I lived in Massachusetts for nine years, but never read or listened to Thoreau during that time.
Now I'm back in Australia, and wish I'd immersed myself in this a decade ago.
I had to read this for homework, but listening to it saved me so much time. Thank you so much for this 😊.
Amazing, thought provoking, and timeless. Thank you writer and narrator!
Thank you for reading this, David.

A book that makes you truly feel bad for the time you have wasted.
+David “whatsdabiznus” Donnelly Jr Don't feel bad. We are swallowed up by the systems of living long before ever discovering knowledge this wise.

Katahdin in the background. Pretty sure that's Pamola and the chimney.
Love, learn and live simply. But we do have duty to our surroundings, which are nothing but mirrors of our hearts. What within, manifest without, the real paradox of our all-related existence. How many can walk the talk of no cars, no electricity and no modern day convenience including this chat? Thanks for the posting.
Corpus Callosum Beautifully put 👐🏼
Not a man or Woman that I know of. Irregardless, going into nature takeing a break is a great uplifter for myself. Yea I could drive to town. Then get what I need and drive back. Then sit on my couch. Or I could walk to the town. On the way I could stop by the river or look at the sunset. Possibly talk to some people along the way. Once I get to town, I could go anywhere I want as slow as I want. Then when I am done I could head home on a different path. Not everyone lives in a box in the woods, but we can still spply similar principles.
David Foster Wallace?
Is this David Foster Wallace?

No credit to the reader >:( he did a great job and I’d like to hear more of his readings but idk who the guy was
He says David Jenkins, at the end -- but since this is a Librivox, i don't believe the man is particularly famous.
Sounds like David Foster Wallace to me.
I’m wondering about the pronunciation of Thoreau. Some people say it should be pronounced like ”Thorough” while some people say the T like in “tomorrow”
do you know how Thoreau himself would pronounce his name ?
It sounds weird pronouncing it like the actor Benitio Del Toro.
It's usually pronounced with the emphasis on the second sylable. Tho - REAU
As for Wikipedia, I wouldnt count as true any encyclopedia that allows readers to enter their own truth. I know an author who appealed to Wikipedia to change the entries that had been made on the meaning of his novel. After repeated requests, a committee of 8 informed him they did not consider him a qualified judge and would not accept his recommendations. Wikipedia is "truthiness" not truth. It is thor-eau with the accent on the second syllable.
BigEvan96 Everybody saying different things in this comment section. Might as well add my own (that I’m making up on the spot). Thrue-uhh 😸

Eh but poetry moslty just as much a waste as chasing gold...some thing arnt necessary or quality.
Thoreau, intelligent man good with theories but lacking real life experiences.
What of Thoreau's experiences were lacking for you? Or is this the first time you've heard him?
Thoreau may have half of my, “real life experiences,” his insightful genius is more than a fair trade.
Yet left a truly timeless legacy.
