I always wondered why it was divided 🧐

  • To understand the context, we have to go back to 1910, when Korea was first annexed by the Empire of Japan.
Fast forward to the end of world war II, and after Japan’s surrender, it is forced to lose Korea. The United States and Soviet Union agree on a provisional partition of Korea through the 38th parallel. In the upper half, the Soviet Union established a communist regime, and in the southern half, the united states established an anti-communist regime.
But this isn’t the end of the story. North Korea wanted to unite the peninsula under a communist regime by invading South Korea. With the help of the Soviet Union and the newly-established Communist China, they launched their attack. South Korea was extremely close to being taken over, but with the help of the United States and The United Nations, they were able to take back most of the island. After 3 years of fighting, a ceasefire left the peninsula divided in two. To this day, this border remains the exact same.

And that’s caused by years of being colonized, having their societal structural and native economy destroyed and precious resources taken away from them, it’s very difficult to recover. Some of the maps that I saw of the Korean war that showed the the battle lines had the US and other nations actually taking territory inside China and then that was when the Chinese got involved because China warned everybody saying don't cross the border and they did cross the border and across the border significantly. And that caused China to enter the war on a major scale, which tipped the hand and forced the the line where we're at and the treaty well the ceasefire there is no treaty so technically the conflict still goes on. Oh yeah and another thing, the ceasefire was signed by the generals, not the North Korean leader who was opposed to it. The generals were done with the fighting and signed the ceasefire and it has been the North Korean government that has refused to sign a treaty

Why did the US and Soviet decide to make provisional partition in Korea? They were supposed to do this on Mainland Japan, Just as they did with East and West Germany. However, the US decided to do this in Korea because 1) technically it had been annexed into the Japanese Empire for 30 odd years so it was still serving the purpose of partitioning an Axis nation under the jurisdiction of the two major allied forces (US and Soviet), 2) it was part of mainland East Asia so a much better buffer zone and, 3) because they realised that Korea had become so exploited during Japanese control is was not much more than a slum - So keeping Japan under total US influence was so much more rewarding with its technological advancements. The division of Korea was really never for Korea but meant for Japan. With the partitioning and the two major powers egging their puppets to grab control - boom proxy war starts.

Fun fact, ever since Korea was split until today, everybody in China especially the government has hated the Kim regime a lot, he was extremely desperate in reunifying Korea, Joeseph Stalin kept warning him that invading South Korea was risky, and he never listened. Due to his negligence in attacking South Korea drawing the US's attention, North Korea was almost reunified over by the US, so he got China involved into the war and wasted countless soldiers. China never wanted to help him, but they just didn't want the US to be their neighbour.
In China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau, we just see him as a crazy tyrant and call him 金三胖 or 肥金 which literally means "third generation fat Kim" or "fat Kim" everybody just photoshops the guy and mocks him because the way he treats his own people is absolutely ruthless.

One of my beefs with American history classes in school: we start at the beginning and get into around the turn of the 20th century when school is about to end. I get it. We need to know where we came from and how we got to where we are today. And we also need to know not to repeat history. Remember this statement: those who do not know history are the ones who are doomed to repeat it. I believe there needs to be two separate classes on American history. It is not a division by the United States and the Soviet Union. South Korea could not accept communism and North Korea could not accept democracy.
