How many hours per week do they have contact with their clients? Here a request: At the start the images change SO fast for minutes long, that it's inducing dizziness for me. If you give something to watch, would you consider giving all of your audience a chance to see it? Later on it was better.
Thank you Hennepin for showing what's possible can actually happen! Especially by focusing on the most simple of starts-- making it easy to access what they need from the get go- information, assistance with rent, legal support or eviction prevention programs. I'm so grateful for TSI I was living in a hospital with no way out I had nothing no furniture no clothes no money, The social worker at the hospital helped me get social security, furniture clothes, found a apartment for me, I now receive rent assistance and go to weekly counseling, I will be forever grateful everyone deserves a home, thank you so much TSI

You're right. It is wonderful. Here in California there are more homeless every day and the encampments are being torn down, over and over. These people then lose everything they have... and this is supposed to HELP?! The money is being spent on removing the mess from wherever it grows, but no money is spent on removing the problem. The problem is having no access to housing. We could be spending the money on building healthy living situations instead of tearing down unhealthy ones. We have examples like Finland and Henepin county. Now we just have to make our politicians turn their sights toward this more functional approach.
Thank you SO much! I have been homeless & it sucks! I've lived in my car, I've crashed with strangers, I've lived on the street. Shelters never felt safe, "assistance" programs were nearly useless. I've been clean from drugs for over 2 decades now, simply because a case manager suggested getting help for my mental health! It worked because it treated the root problem that made staying high so appealing. This is a very similar concept of treating the biggest root problems first! It's tough to get & hold a job while on the streets. No boss wants to see an interview candidate walk in with everything they own in a pack on their back! If I could have had access to something like this back in 2016, I wouldn't have had to drag my kids back to Wyoming with less than half our stuff & spend months living in my car while they stayed with my brother. I'm glad now someone else might not have had to experience the same or worse!😢
It's only logical and literal common sense that if a person has a safe place to do the basics of life, ( wash, cook, and sleep soundly) they have a springboard to get productive in society
I believe we all need a basic income to cover the bare necessities: food, water, housing so when we loose jobs we aren't stressing out of out minds wondering if we will be able to survive. This will boost productivity and morale because we are not so tied down by our jobs
@@creepcraddle That's been tried in many countries already. It basically boils down to people becoming more lazy and dependent. People, who can work, but rather game or watch TV all day. It definitely does NOT boost productivity. However, there ought to be a social insurance in place, where everybody pays into, that gives you a percentage of your last income, if you lose that job to no fault of your own. A system in which you are checked on your applying for jobs, assisted when necessary (like for retraining), and which does get less over time, to kick your as& to make sure you try hard for that job. And of course a system alongside, that provides life-long money, to those who by lasting illness or disability are incapable of holding a job. And everything in between. Such a system helps right away. Without humiliating someone. Without discriminating someone. It is in place in countries in Scandinavia, Denmark and the Netherlands, for instance. It prevents people from losing everything overnight, gives time to adjust and does not patronize people. Not perfect. But compared to many others countries, it is a huge improvement.
All I can say is WOW this model is what I have been talking about to my many community advisory boards to see this model of Housing Rention with a community wide system case management SRO being implemented amazing the stories of recovery as I celebrate 8 years clean & sober today Recovery Rocks
I live in Portland, Oregon & have been clean & sober for over 6 years. I was able to get clean because I went into a treatment program that included housing (an apartment) for the first six months. It was life changing. I had been living in my van, after getting sick & losing my job. Being able to have a roof over my head while I got clean was literally the best thing that could’ve happened. I went through a program that was provided by Central City Concern. I still live in one of their apartment buildings. I was able to get clean, get my health back, get a job & I now pay for my own way. Without the housing part of the treatment program, I think it would’ve been impossible to get & stay healthy.
Congratulations, Linda! It never is clear if drugs caused homelessness, or homelessness caused drug problems. I guess it depends on the situation. It has to be stressful as heck to be out in the streets.
@@Here4TheHeckOfIt Thank you so much! In my case, it was a lot of factors that caused my homelessness. I had been married for years, lived in a country club property, drove a Mercedes, etc, but then I got super sick with Lupus. Because of my sickness, my husband ended up leaving me (true colors, right?), I ended up losing my job & eventually my house & everything else. The pain pills helped numb the pain & eventually I got hooked on them. My life became very dark very quickly. I am fortunate that I had a good support system & was able to find help. There is help available if you really want it. I went into the treatment facility every single day & bothered them until eventually a spot became available. It’s funny how I went from living in a 4000 sq ft home to now a 700 sq ft apartment, but I truly have never been as happy as I am now. I have the peace I had been missing for a long time. Anyway, I think in most cases it’s the drugs first & then the homelessness, but obviously there are exceptions to that. Stay well & happy!

I live here, and while I learned some new things about how the county has systems in place to serve homeless people, it certainly feels like this video shows the rose-tinted glasses view of the situation. You still encounter homeless people every day. People are begging on the streets, whether homeless or not. There are still people sleeping on the light rail trains. There are still multiple large tent encampments in my neighborhood, which are constantly being torn apart by the police, leaving people even more vulnerable and scrambling to find another spot to camp (which is our mayor's preferred "solution" to ending encampments). So all these systems that the video covers are great, and the total number of people experiencing chronic homelessness may be going down, but we certainly have not solved anything yet.
Watch our video on Finland. Finland reduced homelessness 12 years in a row. You have to start someplace. As they say in the video, they started all this when they received Covid funding. That was only a few years ago. In that time, they’ve been able to create a significant reduction in homelessness. They have a system that works, and if it continues to get funding, they will eventually completely eradicate homelessness.
@@InvisiblePeople Okay, but when every local who watches this video comments that this isn't representative of the reality of living here, maybe there's something to learn. I've seen the Finland video, and maybe in 10 years we can get closer to that level, if funding isn't cut, and if someone finds a way to successfully cut off the supply of addictive drugs in the state, and if other counties across the state take care of their own people, so that those who find themselves homeless don't funnel into Minneapolis. I'm a pretty optimistic person, so I certainly hope that will come true someday, but we're nowhere near that now.
And the violence. Shootings and rapes are rampant among the homeless. The drug addiction is very high and this causes people to not qualify for housing.
100 percent, I also live in Minnesota. This is trying to show show a tid bit of what is really going on. Yeah it's good that some good is going on but much more is going on past what this shows. You can put lip stick on a pig, it's still a pig.
@@karlahovde It has been my experience that it is in fact impossible to cut off the supply of drugs. What actually works is having something in your life that is more important than getting high. For MANY people, having a safe, permanent home is that something. I admit that I haven't been working with junkies, but with other drugs. Attitude has a huge impact on what people want, and what they're willing to do to get it. Literally almost everyone I've met who got a safe & stable place to live, the drugs dropped quite a way down the list of desireability.
This is wonderful! It’s awful to not have money, it’s embarrassing and shameful but it shouldn’t be a crime. We have created this economic system, why not create buffers for people who can’t work?
Yes this is a Hugh problem for seniors. There is a two year waiting list for section 8 in Michigan. There isn't enough places for seniors who are unable to work, instead developers come in to cities and buy up building, make them into apartments and charge high rent prices. Fortunately I'm not homeless because me and my sister share a place or we'd both be homeless and no one would care. We need these services for our seniors also.
You can fix homelessness by throwing money at it. You can actually fix many problems with money. It just depends on who you throw it at, and what those people do with it. In California, all the money put into fixing homelessness was/is being embezzled by those the taxpayers entrusted such as those non-profits. The non profits just took the money did minimal effort to benefit the least amount of homeless. All so the non profit admin can pocket the left over money. They pretend to do a good job and get funding over and over again. What California needs is people with altruism.
For every hundred dollar increase in median rent, homelessness increases by 9%. Rents in Raleigh, North Carolina are up 75%. Rents in Orlando, Florida are up 30%. Rents in Austin, Texas are up 40%. Nonprofits are doing better than they ever have, but there’s more people entering into the homelessness because of the lack of affordable housing. If we don’t fix the affordable housing crisis, homelessness will continue to skyrocket.
I don't like phrasing it that way though, and really no amount of money fixes bad schools, bad hospitals, or any other poorly performing government service. Yes sometimes it is only a matter of a program being underfunded but many times it's what you are talking about with massive corruption and bad leadership/management. This isn't even a matter of altruism this is a matter of having proper oversight and competence. I'm not expecting people to be saints just to do their job.

I also saw this when I worked in the field of youth empowerment and adult housing services in Minneapolis/Saint Paul where this documentary takes place. I have a documentary on my channel called Losing Shelter that goes into the corruption widespread bigoted abuse I witnessed and was subjected to, though I did put up a strong fight for my morals.

The people I mostly knew in Hennepin County, mostly didn't have enough employment, even though many had multiple jobs, and medical bills. Yes, addictions are issues for some people but, it's not the majority of cases. Being an unemployed white male in your 30s, who isn't disabled, and no addictions doesn't get you help
From my own experience private renting is measurable and so expensive to so many people private renting should never be seen as a long term goal for people on low income or any benefits we want affordable housing or social housing that is good rent and in good condition aa many social housing is old and run down.
I will be homeless this week. I have had health issues that put me behind on rent despite having a job and being on medical leave and receiving 60% of my pay... after taxes and insurance, my take home is less than $200 a week. I can't make ends meet. Single woman with no dependents- I don't qualify for anything. Homeless shelters are full. I will be in my car. Not every homeless person is a drug addict and refusing to work. I am proof of that.
I grew up in Minneapolis. The forward thinking of Hennepin county is wonderful. What this video didn't cover was regarding housing for families with children. It's great to see them helping individuals. I was nearly homeless twice when my kids were small. That was a truly scary thought. Thank you for this inspirational video!
Your point is valid. We couldn’t fit everything in. We tried. It was too much already. Interesting to know that family homelessness is skyrocketing across the country. People often highlight chronic homelessness because that’s what they see- visible homelessness, yet family homelessness remains a growing crisis We try to cover family homelessness as much as possible, but stories can be challenging because it’s also important to protect people and privacy.
They also did that with international students in the Netherlands that just couldn't find housing before school started, charged like 300 euros/mo for a homeless shelter and was planned to end in December of all months....

I came to MN (my Dakota roots are here) from FL 6 weeks ahead of Hurricane Helene. Could not afford living in FL and yet was sharing a little home with my daughter. I just began working at Mystic Lake. In Fl on Oct 1, 2024, it will be illegal to sleep outside. If I could take this knowledge back to FL I would advocate for it. St. Petersburg and all of Florida have been so busy gentrifying. But we should’ve been busy doing this! So my question is where do you get the funding? How long does it take for people to begin networking to get the funding to bring this to other cities? Because it’s not just being underpaid it’s being an addict and all of the other things. I love this concept but I can’t imagine how To take a concept to a state that needs this so badly and say, “hey, let’s do what Hennepin County in Minnesota is doing”. Who would even listen?
As an independent politically I will say this about the right wing: they are awful on issues such as this. They would rather give tax cuts. MN is extremely high tax, it's hard to do business here. So there's a balancing act alongside needing good leadership. FL is not balanced at all, and neither is MN. One is far right the other far left. I'd like to see "big government" prioritize housing for everyone at the Federal level rather than all these unaffordable wars and crazy climate initiatives (mandating EVs when people can't even afford ICE? crazy!).
It's not being sent to court for non payment of rent that is the core issue here. I don't expect landlords to be a charity. The issue is not having a safety net when the eviction happens, there should always be a baseline housing setup. Not having enough homeless shelters is insanity. Not having enough public housing is also a serious mistake. Housing is not optional in places like Minnesota it gets extremely cold here in winter. But even in a place like California it's brutal to not have shelter. The people in charge are simply not making these problems a proper priority, instead deciding to build a shiny new government office or whatnot.

We seldom seen homeless people within the city limits. Now it's a daily thing. Breaks my heart to see a lot of Indigenous people experiencing homelessness & being treated so awful by the entitled folks that have good paying jobs & safe homes of thier own. I'd like to learn how to start making a change within our society here in ND

Truly like your attitude! Hope you really start somewhere and succeed. Please keep the world updated and share what you've learned in some kind of workbook as an e-book. That you could even sell, if you felt you needed the money. If not someone else makes such a workbook before you do. And I even think to have several workbooks would be good! Public housing needs to be expanded, same with affordable housing. In the meantime, these guys have the right idea. There are still a lot of homeless in Hennepin county by the way the problem is not solved it's just better than many other major cities. Rental assistance is just one tool in the box. Homeless shelters are another. There are not nearly enough homeless shelters in MN let alone in the rest of the nation. Drug treatment centers are another important element since drug abuse is a large contributor to homelessness. Oh and I do like the mobile services tent idea. And yes the light rail is a lifeline for homeless people in Minneapolis, kinda messed up how that developed.
Isn't it amazing how when the people working for the homeless really care about what they are doing and are taking their jobs seriously, they have a 94 percent retention rate in their own apartments and are getting thousands per year off the streets. So it isn't that these people are all lazy drug addicts that don't want to work or so mentally ill that they need to be incarcerated in a mental ward. If someone actually helps them navigate the process, they can succeed. I feel like certain people with certain personalities are just not wanted in society in certain areas and that is why they are homeless. People who are rough or have a street sense or have been through trauma, the rest of society doesn't want them around or have to acknowledge them. This city is showing compassion, and that makes all the difference. These people seem like many others on the streets, but these people are in a system that cares and that is how they are making it.

I am 29 years sober. Yeah, it was one step at a time, but if people didn't help me, I wouldn't be typing this right now. We have to help our homeless neighbors, and if we don't fix the affordable housing crisis, homelessness is going to continue to grow.

They're difficult and expensive to convert into self-contained apartments because of the challenge of creating plumbing. But they could easily be turned into dorm like rooms or even apartments that have tiny kitchens that share bathrooms. With small electric appliances, any room can have a kitchen.
Here in Massachusetts the homelessness is off the charts, the entire state now the median rent here is a 1, 000 dollars a month to live in a terrible neighborhood in a one bedroom, if it wasn't for section 8 ( which saves and keeps 1000s of people housed, because otherwise they would never be able to afford where they live) people would be overflowing all over the streets here

Start searching online for homeless prevention programs in your area. Most places have at least a handful of programs that can help one way or another, unless you're in a uniquely bankrupt city that has no nonprofits either.
I’m so sorry. I have been there. I wish I could help you. I live in Illinois. Will government housing not let you have your cats. I’m not sure if you can get on a list for affordable housing or if they have that in NC. Most states do.
That's horrid, Daryl. Are there houses that will accept two cats? If so, take that. People probably won't notice how many cats you have to begin with. It's not optimal, but when your cats are homeless with you, that's even less. If necessary you have to keep two of the cats away from the windows, or keep the blinds down and live with electric light. Still better, than all 5 of you becoming homeless. While you of course keep on searching for that special place, that has no stipulations about how many cats one can have. But be smart and don't get a 5th cat! And if one is older, don't replace it after it passes the rainbow bridge. Hope you find something real soon, for a man that loves his cats like you, is most probably a decent human being. And if not in NC, than perhaps somewhere else, providing you could find and keep a job there? I'd do anything to prevent my cats from losing their home.
Billionaires are walking in space. The resources and man power required to complete such a task must be mind blowing. The reality is homeless don't create capital, and they don't supply resources. There is no pressure for the people in charge of these resources to help lower income people or people lacking education. The idea of there being a "choice" to help is even insane. If you can imagine owning mines, or forests, or production chains. We could end homelessness in a week. But its not good for business.
There is still so much work to be done. Its an epidemic in every city. I see so many vacant buildings in my town that could be utilized just for housing.

I fully support the one room concept. In this way, more housing units can be built to support more ppl. Also, full support is a must! Helping people to learn to manage their lives will reduce the recidivism rate.
I watched that whole thing, but I'm still a little confused. So these are multiple organizations all working together? Have they coined a term for their multi agency program/s? I would love to reach out to our politicians in San Diego and share this video, along with others. Would like to offer up more information though. Much of it is the county and it is also organizations working together. I understand that not explain it completely. We did the best we could to make a compelling documentary that showed systemssystems working together In most communities , there is a lack of coordination. Nonprofits are all fighting for the same scraps of funding. It’s very competitive, which does not really provide a culture of coordination and cooperation. Please don’t give me wrong, nonprofits try, and they well, but they all have their own agenda. What had been Hennepin county is doing is showing what could happen if people worked together. If America took the tiniest fraction of the YEARLY military budget and allocated it towards ending homelessness, it would be solved almost overnight. The reason the societal epidemic of homelessness is allowed to continue, is strictly a threat by the ruling class: if you don't go to work and create profits for us, you will be homeless. I worked in this field and also lived in a youth transitional housing program as a teenager, which did get me housing, then supported my transition to self-determination. This was before the Housing First movement took over. Thereafter around the mid-2010s, I discovered many of these programs were destroyed by Housing First. It became extremely inaccessible to the point that if I had applied for that program only 5 years later (2017 vs 2012) I would not have qualified until I met much more brutal conditions. The Housing First model is a topdown nationalistic response, which threatened programs with losing govt funding if they didn't change. It also sucked services, nonprofits and programs into it that were focused on other issues and strategies than simply fixating on homelessness. We now have far fewer preventative and early intervention focused programs; accessing these programs has become insanely difficult for the majority of people in need- many will be deemed as not qualifying. Economic empowerment and healing trauma are not prioritized in many of these programs to the point where I worked this wasn't even referenced. You have no idea what hell on earth is created with the kind of depraved conditions these programs fell into. I have a documentary on my channel called Losing Shelter that covers my experiences and additional research. I also have a deep dive report on the adult housing program I worked for called Kimball Court: A Case Study of a Failed Program.
Housing first models work best. A fair social security system alongside that works best. But universal basic income does not work at all. Where that is tried, too many people become entitled and lazy. Everything they truly need, is taken care of. So quite a lot of people are satisfied with gaming or watching TV all day. IT DOES NOT WORK, because THEY DO NOT WORK. My local garage lost a good worker, who didn't mind to get less money to not have to go to work anymore. They can't find replacement either. People who get money for free, without a logical cause (like a debilitating chronic disease of a disability, with which they cannot work), and especially when that money is enough to live on, will milk the system until it collapses. Then what?
I'd love to see this EXACT thing implemented in CA. Living in San Diego and knowing how easy it is to become homeless and slip through the cracks. Now that it's illegal to camp people lose their belongings more and more and are left to continue to suffer in even worse conditions just because they're on drugs. I need this. I live in this state but not this county. My rent just got raised by 800 per month. There is no hosting or programs in my county. Literally no help. I have 5 jobs. I'm having health crisis because of it. I need this help. Hope this comes to the whole state and rural community.
@@christopherbasham1551 as someone who has been in the business I can tell you. When they are making a hefty profit after taxes, insurance, mortgage (if they don't own outright) and repairs. The average person may not be able to make that judgement call but I know what goes into it. I can safely say for a fact that when a place is charging more than $1500 for a one bedroom apartment they are being greedy in most cases. Besides relying on the free market to help the bottom rung have shelter is absurd on it's face. The home builders would rather make gigantic McMansions in the middle of nowhere. The landlords squeeze as much rent as they can, they don't charge the minimum to get by.

My family and I have seen homeless when my husband and I took ill back in 2011 mortgage , company wouldn't work with us we live in Mn wasn't a good situation, Thank God we are out of that situation. We feel horrible, about other homeless people. Winter's gets cold 🥶 here. Open up the empty office spaces downtown Minneapolis to the homeless. Hennepin County is also talking, about closing a shelter in Minneapolis soon because of the lack of funding. I hope and prqy it stays open. .
I live downtown. At first, I was very happy that the Cecil Hotel was renovated as Section 8 housing. But two years on, it's not even half full due to the danger, severe cockroach infestations, feces and blood left in hallways, etc. Such a waste. (I live in a former-SRO hotel that renovated into decent microflats. It's safe, it's clean. So it certainly can be done.)

I was taught to have an "emergency credit card", but I learned that figuring out what all your basic bills for a month and putting that in a high interest savings as quickly as possible, makes a better "emergency fund". I'm out of debt, building retirement, and I'm working on building my 6 month emergency fund.
I live in Minneapolis. They have some good programs, but they are hard to access. There is one number to call if you need food assistance, housing asst, Medicaid. I called daily for 3 weeks straight and couldn't even get through to a human. It didn't put you on hold, just said there is high call volume, call back later and hung up. County services often take months to get including case management. The system is unfortunately set up to drive people into homelessness. If you're disabled it's even worse. If you can get the designation of disabled (from the state) many more programs open up, but that process also takes months. Even things like the expectation that you have a printer to print, sign and send back forms is a barrier. I do think Hennepin County is improving programs by listening to people, but what does it matter if you can't access them?
30 days in Hennepin to qualify for assistance. There are family shelters. Safe private rooms. Mary's place is not through the government. 2 different ones through county, plus women's organizations. Good luck.
ummm I live here and yes there are a few services for the homeless here and there but we have a HUGE homeless problem that is very, very far from being "solved".
You do not live in a vacuum. The free world is under attack from many sides. If you choose to ignore that, and offer countries like the Ukraine up to whomever wants to devour them, you'd have a much bigger and much more COSTLY problem later on. Yes, war could come to you on your grounds. Destroying the homes of many and increasing the homeless problem exponentially. There goes a LOT of money to the homeless problem already. And yet I hear about encampments every week and I believe there were 2 murders in one the other week. One was shown on camera, just shot a guy in the head! A lot of these people are on drugs yet they do nothing about stopping the dealers that bring a lot of the crime to the encampments… I don’t know when open drug use became legal but it isn’t good for anyone.

It's so important to highlight home loss of victims of violence who do not have addictions because I lost my home to a dishonest, hostile landlord evading repairs like major structural collapse, mold, asbestos and the original Philadelphia eviction diversion program was created around our dilemma a couple hours after I received a call from my local council office. Seeing this is like a real insult, human trafficking to defame someone as having an addiction or mental illness they don't have for political leverage needs attention and honest, rapid resolution. I'm still separated from family due to a defamation rumor and extreme hostile attacks and actions against my life and financial stability. I've heard the most ridiculous gossip. I am a veteran female Army journalist and I hope people get real about the real causes of this "human trafficking" and drugging of the population if they didn't come out as a government trained journalist being an everyday citizen. It's crime to humanity. Only peace and absolute solution should prevail immediately, red tape is delusional and made up, it endangers people while immediately benefiting the safe, comfortable privileged 😢
Homelessness echoes the existing cracks in a flawed society that slowly pushes people to escape. Cognitive, intellectual, physical and mental health disabilities can be a place of loneliness and isolation. So can sickness, social economics, race, age and addiction. Many overlap. It can be difficult to find support or genuine long term friendships under these circumstances. Drug addiction is a mirrored reflection of how many of us feel inflicted inwardly when facing relationships, society & the surrounding world. Health issues make it difficult for a person to work, without finances it is difficult to support yourself or those that are dependent on you. Homelessness isn't just a materialistic topic to be fixed, it echoes the underlining problems and core foundations of our belief system as a society. 🙂

I'm so grateful for TSI I was living in a hospital with no way out I had nothing no furniture no clothes no money, The social worker at the hospital helped me get social security, furniture clothes, found a apartment for me, I now receive rent assistance and go to weekly counseling, I will be forever grateful everyone deserves a home, thank you so much TSI

Here in California there are more homeless every day and the encampments are being torn down, over and over. These people then lose everything they have... and this is supposed to HELP?!
The money is being spent on removing the mess from wherever it grows, but no money is spent on removing the problem.
The problem is having no access to housing.
We could be spending the money on building healthy living situations instead of tearing down unhealthy ones.
We have examples like Finland and Henepin county. Now we just have to make our politicians turn their sights toward this more functional approach.
Thank you SO much! I have been homeless & it sucks! I've lived in my car, I've crashed with strangers, I've lived on the street. Shelters never felt safe, "assistance" programs were nearly useless. I've been clean from drugs for over 2 decades now, simply because a case manager suggested getting help for my mental health! It worked because it treated the root problem that made staying high so appealing. This is a very similar concept of treating the biggest root problems first! It's tough to get & hold a job while on the streets. No boss wants to see an interview candidate walk in with everything they own in a pack on their back! If I could have had access to something like this back in 2016, I wouldn't have had to drag my kids back to Wyoming with less than half our stuff & spend months living in my car while they stayed with my brother. I'm glad now someone else might not have had to experience the same or worse!😢
It's only logical and literal common sense that if a person has a safe place to do the basics of life, ( wash, cook, and sleep soundly) they have a springboard to get productive in society

@@creepcraddle That's been tried in many countries already. It basically boils down to people becoming more lazy and dependent. People, who can work, but rather game or watch TV all day. It definitely does NOT boost productivity.
However, there ought to be a social insurance in place, where everybody pays into, that gives you a percentage of your last income, if you lose that job to no fault of your own. A system in which you are checked on your applying for jobs, assisted when necessary (like for retraining), and which does get less over time, to kick your as& to make sure you try hard for that job.
And of course a system alongside, that provides life-long money, to those who by lasting illness or disability are incapable of holding a job. And everything in between.
Such a system helps right away. Without humiliating someone. Without discriminating someone.
It is in place in countries in Scandinavia, Denmark and the Netherlands, for instance. It prevents people from losing everything overnight, gives time to adjust and does not patronize people. Not perfect. But compared to many others countries, it is a huge improvement.

I live in Portland, Oregon & have been clean & sober for over 6 years. I was able to get clean because I went into a treatment program that included housing (an apartment) for the first six months. It was life changing. I had been living in my van, after getting sick & losing my job. Being able to have a roof over my head while I got clean was literally the best thing that could’ve happened. I went through a program that was provided by Central City Concern. I still live in one of their apartment buildings. I was able to get clean, get my health back, get a job & I now pay for my own way. Without the housing part of the treatment program, I think it would’ve been impossible to get & stay healthy.

Congratulations, Linda! It never is clear if drugs caused homelessness, or homelessness caused drug problems. I guess it depends on the situation. It has to be stressful as heck to be out in the streets.
@@Here4TheHeckOfIt Thank you so much! In my case, it was a lot of factors that caused my homelessness. I had been married for years, lived in a country club property, drove a Mercedes, etc, but then I got super sick with Lupus. Because of my sickness, my husband ended up leaving me (true colors, right?), I ended up losing my job & eventually my house & everything else. The pain pills helped numb the pain & eventually I got hooked on them. My life became very dark very quickly. I am fortunate that I had a good support system & was able to find help. There is help available if you really want it. I went into the treatment facility every single day & bothered them until eventually a spot became available. It’s funny how I went from living in a 4000 sq ft home to now a 700 sq ft apartment, but I truly have never been as happy as I am now. I have the peace I had been missing for a long time. Anyway, I think in most cases it’s the drugs first & then the homelessness, but obviously there are exceptions to that. Stay well & happy!

The programs don't "help" though, the homeless are their cash cows and so are the foster kids.
I live here, and while I learned some new things about how the county has systems in place to serve homeless people, it certainly feels like this video shows the rose-tinted glasses view of the situation. You still encounter homeless people every day. People are begging on the streets, whether homeless or not. There are still people sleeping on the light rail trains. There are still multiple large tent encampments in my neighborhood, which are constantly being torn apart by the police, leaving people even more vulnerable and scrambling to find another spot to camp (which is our mayor's preferred "solution" to ending encampments). So all these systems that the video covers are great, and the total number of people experiencing chronic homelessness may be going down, but we certainly have not solved anything yet.
Watch our video on Finland. Finland reduced homelessness 12 years in a row. You have to start someplace. As they say in the video, they started all this when they received Covid funding. That was only a few years ago. In that time, they’ve been able to create a significant reduction in homelessness. They have a system that works, and if it continues to get funding, they will eventually completely eradicate homelessness.
@@InvisiblePeople Okay, but when every local who watches this video comments that this isn't representative of the reality of living here, maybe there's something to learn. I've seen the Finland video, and maybe in 10 years we can get closer to that level, if funding isn't cut, and if someone finds a way to successfully cut off the supply of addictive drugs in the state, and if other counties across the state take care of their own people, so that those who find themselves homeless don't funnel into Minneapolis. I'm a pretty optimistic person, so I certainly hope that will come true someday, but we're nowhere near that now.
And the violence. Shootings and rapes are rampant among the homeless. The drug addiction is very high and this causes people to not qualify for housing.
100 percent, I also live in Minnesota. This is trying to show show a tid bit of what is really going on. Yeah it's good that some good is going on but much more is going on past what this shows. You can put lip stick on a pig, it's still a pig.
@@karlahovde It has been my experience that it is in fact impossible to cut off the supply of drugs. What actually works is having something in your life that is more important than getting high. For MANY people, having a safe, permanent home is that something.
I admit that I haven't been working with junkies, but with other drugs. Attitude has a huge impact on what people want, and what they're willing to do to get it. Literally almost everyone I've met who got a safe & stable place to live, the drugs dropped quite a way down the list of desireability.
This is wonderful! It’s awful to not have money, it’s embarrassing and shameful but it shouldn’t be a crime. We have created this economic system, why not create buffers for people who can’t work?
And with automation killing jobs, we have a perfect storm of homelessness coming
Yes this is a Hugh problem for seniors. There is a two year waiting list for section 8 in Michigan. There isn't enough places for seniors who are unable to work, instead developers come in to cities and buy up building, make them into apartments and charge high rent prices. Fortunately I'm not homeless because me and my sister share a place or we'd both be homeless and no one would care. We need these services for our seniors also.
In some areas, people who CAN and DO work full time are priced out of housing. Shelter is 77% of my income.

You can fix homelessness by throwing money at it. You can actually fix many problems with money. It just depends on who you throw it at, and what those people do with it. In California, all the money put into fixing homelessness was/is being embezzled by those the taxpayers entrusted such as those non-profits. The non profits just took the money did minimal effort to benefit the least amount of homeless. All so the non profit admin can pocket the left over money. They pretend to do a good job and get funding over and over again. What California needs is people with altruism.
For every hundred dollar increase in median rent, homelessness increases by 9%. Rents in Raleigh, North Carolina are up 75%. Rents in Orlando, Florida are up 30%. Rents in Austin, Texas are up 40%. Nonprofits are doing better than they ever have, but there’s more people entering into the homelessness because of the lack of affordable housing. If we don’t fix the affordable housing crisis, homelessness will continue to skyrocket.

I don't like phrasing it that way though, and really no amount of money fixes bad schools, bad hospitals, or any other poorly performing government service. Yes sometimes it is only a matter of a program being underfunded but many times it's what you are talking about with massive corruption and bad leadership/management. This isn't even a matter of altruism this is a matter of having proper oversight and competence. I'm not expecting people to be saints just to do their job.

I also saw this when I worked in the field of youth empowerment and adult housing services in Minneapolis/Saint Paul where this documentary takes place. I have a documentary on my channel called Losing Shelter that goes into the corruption widespread bigoted abuse I witnessed and was subjected to, though I did put up a strong fight for my morals.

The people I mostly knew in Hennepin County, mostly didn't have enough employment, even though many had multiple jobs, and medical bills.
Yes, addictions are issues for some people but, it's not the majority of cases. Being an unemployed white male in your 30s, who isn't disabled, and no addictions doesn't get you help
From my own experience private renting is measurable and so expensive to so many people private renting should never be seen as a long term goal for people on low income or any benefits we want affordable housing or social housing that is good rent and in good condition aa many social housing is old and run down.

I will be homeless this week. I have had health issues that put me behind on rent despite having a job and being on medical leave and receiving 60% of my pay... after taxes and insurance, my take home is less than $200 a week. I can't make ends meet. Single woman with no dependents- I don't qualify for anything. Homeless shelters are full. I will be in my car. Not every homeless person is a drug addict and refusing to work. I am proof of that.
I grew up in Minneapolis. The forward thinking of Hennepin county is wonderful. What this video didn't cover was regarding housing for families with children. It's great to see them helping individuals. I was nearly homeless twice when my kids were small. That was a truly scary thought. Thank you for this inspirational video!

I came to MN (my Dakota roots are here) from FL 6 weeks ahead of Hurricane Helene.

If I could take this knowledge back to FL I would advocate for it.
St. Petersburg and all of Florida have been so busy gentrifying. But we should’ve been busy doing this! So my question is where do you get the funding? How long does it take for people to begin networking to get the funding to bring this to other cities? Because it’s not just being underpaid it’s being an addict and all of the other things. I love this concept but I can’t imagine how To take a concept to a state that needs this so badly and say, “hey, let’s do what Hennepin County in Minnesota is doing”.

As an independent politically I will say this about the right wing: they are awful on issues such as this. They would rather give tax cuts. MN is extremely high tax, it's hard to do business here. So there's a balancing act alongside needing good leadership. FL is not balanced at all, and neither is MN. One is far right the other far left. I'd like to see "big government" prioritize housing for everyone at the Federal level rather than all these unaffordable wars and crazy climate initiatives (mandating EVs when people can't even afford ICE? crazy!).

No one should ever be sent to court over housing issues. Period.
It's not being sent to court for non payment of rent that is the core issue here. I don't expect landlords to be a charity. The issue is not having a safety net when the eviction happens, there should always be a baseline housing setup. Not having enough homeless shelters is insanity. Not having enough public housing is also a serious mistake. Housing is not optional in places like Minnesota it gets extremely cold here in winter. But even in a place like California it's brutal to not have shelter. The people in charge are simply not making these problems a proper priority, instead deciding to build a shiny new government office or whatnot.

We seldom seen homeless people within the city limits. Now it's a daily thing. Breaks my heart to see a lot of Indigenous people experiencing homelessness & being treated so awful by the entitled folks that have good paying jobs & safe homes of thier own.

Public housing needs to be expanded, same with affordable housing. In the meantime, these guys have the right idea. There are still a lot of homeless in Hennepin county by the way the problem is not solved it's just better than many other major cities. Rental assistance is just one tool in the box. Homeless shelters are another. There are not nearly enough homeless shelters in MN let alone in the rest of the nation. Drug treatment centers are another important element since drug abuse is a large contributor to homelessness. Oh and I do like the mobile services tent idea. And yes the light rail is a lifeline for homeless people in Minneapolis, kinda messed up how that developed.

Isn't it amazing how when the people working for the homeless really care about what they are doing and are taking their jobs seriously, they have a 94 percent retention rate in their own apartments and are getting thousands per year off the streets. So it isn't that these people are all lazy drug addicts that don't want to work or so mentally ill that they need to be incarcerated in a mental ward. If someone actually helps them navigate the process, they can succeed.
I feel like certain people with certain personalities are just not wanted in society in certain areas and that is why they are homeless. People who are rough or have a street sense or have been through trauma, the rest of society doesn't want them around or have to acknowledge them. This city is showing compassion, and that makes all the difference.
These people seem like many others on the streets, but these people are in a system that cares and that is how they are making it.

I am 29 years sober. Yeah, it was one step at a time, but if people didn't help me, I wouldn't be typing this right now. We have to help our homeless neighbors, and if we don't fix the affordable housing crisis, homelessness is going to continue to grow.

They're difficult and expensive to convert into self-contained apartments because of the challenge of creating plumbing. But they could easily be turned into dorm like rooms or even apartments that have tiny kitchens that share bathrooms. With small electric appliances, any room can have a kitchen.

Here in Massachusetts the homelessness is off the charts, the entire state now the median rent here is a 1, 000 dollars a month to live in a terrible neighborhood in a one bedroom, if it wasn't for section 8 ( which saves and keeps 1000s of people housed, because otherwise they would never be able to afford where they live) people would be overflowing all over the streets here
Hennepin County 1 br rent is around $1,000. $800 for a studio.

Start searching online for homeless prevention programs in your area. Most places have at least a handful of programs that can help one way or another, unless you're in a uniquely bankrupt city that has no nonprofits either.
I’m so sorry. I have been there. I wish I could help you. I live in Illinois. Will government housing not let you have your cats. I’m not sure if you can get on a list for affordable housing or if they have that in NC. Most states do.
That's horrid, Daryl. Are there houses that will accept two cats? If so, take that. People probably won't notice how many cats you have to begin with. It's not optimal, but when your cats are homeless with you, that's even less. If necessary you have to keep two of the cats away from the windows, or keep the blinds down and live with electric light. Still better, than all 5 of you becoming homeless.
While you of course keep on searching for that special place, that has no stipulations about how many cats one can have. But be smart and don't get a 5th cat! And if one is older, don't replace it after it passes the rainbow bridge.
Hope you find something real soon, for a man that loves his cats like you, is most probably a decent human being.
And if not in NC, than perhaps somewhere else, providing you could find and keep a job there?
I'd do anything to prevent my cats from losing their home.

Billionaires are walking in space. The resources and man power required to complete such a task must be mind blowing. The reality is homeless don't create capital, and they don't supply resources. There is no pressure for the people in charge of these resources to help lower income people or people lacking education. The idea of there being a "choice" to help is even insane. If you can imagine owning mines, or forests, or production chains. We could end homelessness in a week. But its not good for business.

There is still so much work to be done. Its an epidemic in every city. I see so many vacant buildings in my town that could be utilized just for housing.

I fully support the one room concept. In this way, more housing units can be built to support more ppl. Also, full support is a must! Helping people to learn to manage their lives will reduce the recidivism rate.

Much of it is the county and it is also organizations working together. I understand that not explain it completely. We did the best we could to make a compelling documentary that showed systemssystems working together
In most communities , there is a lack of coordination. Nonprofits are all fighting for the same scraps of funding. It’s very competitive, which does not really provide a culture of coordination and cooperation. Please don’t give me wrong, nonprofits try, and they well, but they all have their own agenda.
What had been Hennepin county is doing is showing what could happen if people worked together.

If America took the tiniest fraction of the YEARLY military budget and allocated it towards ending homelessness, it would be solved almost overnight.
The reason the societal epidemic of homelessness is allowed to continue, is strictly a threat by the ruling class: if you don't go to work and create profits for us, you will be homeless. Now mush workers mush!
Housing first models work best. Even better when it includes universal basic income without penalty or shame.

I worked in this field and also lived in a youth transitional housing program as a teenager, which did get me housing, then supported my transition to self-determination. This was before the Housing First movement took over. Thereafter around the mid-2010s, I discovered many of these programs were destroyed by Housing First. It became extremely inaccessible to the point that if I had applied for that program only 5 years later (2017 vs 2012) I would not have qualified until I met much more brutal conditions. The Housing First model is a topdown nationalistic response, which threatened programs with losing govt funding if they didn't change. It also sucked services, nonprofits and programs into it that were focused on other issues and strategies than simply fixating on homelessness. We now have far fewer preventative and early intervention focused programs; accessing these programs has become insanely difficult for the majority of people in need- many will be deemed as not qualifying. Economic empowerment and healing trauma are not prioritized in many of these programs to the point where I worked this wasn't even referenced. You have no idea what hell on earth is created with the kind of depraved conditions these programs fell into. I have a documentary on my channel called Losing Shelter that covers my experiences and additional research. I also have a deep dive report on the adult housing program I worked for called Kimball Court: A Case Study of a Failed Program.
Housing first models work best. A fair social security system alongside that works best. But universal basic income does not work at all. Where that is tried, too many people become entitled and lazy. Everything they truly need, is taken care of. So quite a lot of people are satisfied with gaming or watching TV all day. IT DOES NOT WORK, because THEY DO NOT WORK.
My local garage lost a good worker, who didn't mind to get less money to not have to go to work anymore. They can't find replacement either. People who get money for free, without a logical cause (like a debilitating chronic disease of a disability, with which they cannot work), and especially when that money is enough to live on, will milk the system until it collapses. Then what?

I'd love to see this EXACT thing implemented in CA. Living in San Diego and knowing how easy it is to become homeless and slip through the cracks. Now that it's illegal to camp people lose their belongings more and more and are left to continue to suffer in even worse conditions just because they're on drugs. I need this. I live in this state but not this county. My rent just got raised by 800 per month. There is no hosting or programs in my county. Literally no help. I have 5 jobs. I'm having health crisis because of it. I need this help. Hope this comes to the whole state and rural community.
Rent is too high and increases exorbitantly. This should be regulated to keep people housed. Some landlords are just too greedy.

@@christopherbasham1551 as someone who has been in the business I can tell you. When they are making a hefty profit after taxes, insurance, mortgage (if they don't own outright) and repairs. The average person may not be able to make that judgement call but I know what goes into it. I can safely say for a fact that when a place is charging more than $1500 for a one bedroom apartment they are being greedy in most cases. Besides relying on the free market to help the bottom rung have shelter is absurd on it's face. The home builders would rather make gigantic McMansions in the middle of nowhere. The landlords squeeze as much rent as they can, they don't charge the minimum to get by.

My family and I have seen homeless when my husband and I took ill back in 2011 mortgage , company wouldn't work with us
we live in Mn wasn't a good situation, Thank God we are out of that situation. We feel horrible, about other homeless people. Winter's gets cold 🥶 here. Open up the empty office spaces downtown Minneapolis to the homeless. Hennepin County is also talking, about closing a shelter in Minneapolis soon because of the lack of funding. I hope and prqy it stays open.

The SRO in downtown LA really needs to be investigated you got to see how these people live it's disgusting some of them would be better in a tent

I live downtown. At first, I was very happy that the Cecil Hotel was renovated as Section 8 housing. But two years on, it's not even half full due to the danger, severe cockroach infestations, feces and blood left in hallways, etc. Such a waste. (I live in a former-SRO hotel that renovated into decent microflats. It's safe, it's clean. So it certainly can be done.)

I was taught to have an "emergency credit card", but I learned that figuring out what all your basic bills for a month and putting that in a high interest savings as quickly as possible, makes a better "emergency fund". I'm out of debt, building retirement, and I'm working on building my 6 month emergency fund.

I live in Minneapolis. They have some good programs, but they are hard to access. There is one number to call if you need food assistance, housing asst, Medicaid. I called daily for 3 weeks straight and couldn't even get through to a human. It didn't put you on hold, just said there is high call volume, call back later and hung up. County services often take months to get including case management. The system is unfortunately set up to drive people into homelessness. If you're disabled it's even worse. If you can get the designation of disabled (from the state) many more programs open up, but that process also takes months. Even things like the expectation that you have a printer to print, sign and send back forms is a barrier.
I do think Hennepin County is improving programs by listening to people, but what does it matter if you can't access them?
There should be no homelessness in America!

30 days in Hennepin to qualify for assistance. There are family shelters. Safe private rooms. Mary's place is not through the government. 2 different ones through county, plus women's organizations. Good luck.
ummm I live here and yes there are a few services for the homeless here and there but we have a HUGE homeless problem that is very, very far from being "solved".

Landlords are snakes you need to shake up the real estate industry if you want to replicate Finland's housing. Of course the slumlords wont allow this
requires much more. Ending kleptocracy legalized bribery, progressive taxation with steeper curve for the wealthy and well off, regulation for the common good. In another word become social democracy like many wealthy European nations with barely any homelessness.
Do what Bernie Sanders proposes in general and you get there. Most important would be to get rid of corruption that is bribery.

And yet I hear about encampments every week and I believe there were 2 murders in one the other week.
One was shown on camera, just shot a guy in the head!
A lot of these people are on drugs yet they do nothing about stopping the dealers that bring a lot of the crime to the encampments…

Yes, there is funding in homeless organizations, but there obviously isn’t enough, so I challenge people who say that ending the homeless crisis is simple.
It's so important to highlight home loss of victims of violence who do not have addictions because I lost my home to a dishonest, hostile landlord evading repairs like major structural collapse, mold, asbestos and the original Philadelphia eviction diversion program was created around our dilemma a couple hours after I received a call from my local council office.
Seeing this is like a real insult, human trafficking to defame someone as having an addiction or mental illness they don't have for political leverage needs attention and honest, rapid resolution.
I'm still separated from family due to a defamation rumor and extreme hostile attacks and actions against my life and financial stability. I've heard the most ridiculous gossip. I am a veteran female Army journalist and I hope people get real about the real causes of this "human trafficking" and drugging of the population if they didn't come out as a government trained journalist being an everyday citizen.
It's crime to humanity. Only peace and absolute solution should prevail immediately, red tape is delusional and made up, it endangers people while immediately benefiting the safe, comfortable privileged 😢

Homelessness echoes the existing cracks in a flawed society that slowly pushes people to escape. Cognitive, intellectual, physical and mental health disabilities can be a place of loneliness and isolation. So can sickness, social economics, race, age and addiction. Many overlap. It can be difficult to find support or genuine long term friendships under these circumstances. Drug addiction is a mirrored reflection of how many of us feel inflicted inwardly when facing relationships, society & the surrounding world. Health issues make it difficult for a person to work, without finances it is difficult to support yourself or those that are dependent on you. Homelessness isn't just a materialistic topic to be fixed, it echoes the underlining problems and core foundations of our belief system as a society. 🙂
No country can be great if they aren't taking care of those who are disadvantaged
