Probably one of my most unpopular opinions is that I think that flight attendant was in the right. Probably not the best to stand up and start shouting about terrorist attacks on a plane full of concerned passengers.

I love how they think they're entitled to break FAA regulations because they happen to work for a television channel and they want to report the news 5 minutes before everyone in the world finds out anyways.
I love how his voice didn't change at all when he called her flight attendant crazy lady.
I read this 7 years later and it comes back to me that when I saw it, so many years ago, I thought: Sorkin must have been forced under threat of violence not to go "Flight attendent nurse Ratchet" here. (also I would really like to have the feeling back when I saw this the first time)

Twenty-five Flight Attendants, eight pilots and three Customer Service Agents died on September 11th. The man behind the murder of people they knew and worked with was killed like the piece of shit he was.

I love Don's moment of realisation: "How paranoid do you have to be..." *brain goes click. Yes, just that paranoid.
Aussie Jed Don read the pilot, United stripes on his shoulders tells him that this pilot was a combat vet.
Those stripes just indicate his rank ie he's a Captain, and captain of the aircraft.
@@aussiejed1 same airline as at least one of the planes that was used in the 911 attacks. That's what most people miss. If he was in service at the time commercially there's a decent chance he knew the crew on those flights. Not to mention how it clicks in his head why they might be "paranoid"

From what I've been told, the bands on the pilot's arms and the two pins are military insignia. He was air force before being a commercial pilot. That's why Don looks at them and makes a realization.

i was casually watching this on twitter and legit thought it was a comedic skit until i read the title
I love how one of the major themes in this episode was demonstrating how everyone loves to deliver news. The same thing happens later when Will tells Lonny that HE should tell the two cops the news.
Yardigan homework: complete. I am in complete shock from this scene. I have never, and I mean NEVER, had something pull on my heartstrings so hard. And when I say it pulled on them, I mean it LITERALLY tore them straight from my chest and left me in a bleeding, limp heap on the floor, because this is the most painful, unintentionally funny scene I have ever seen. I cannot fathom how this was ever approved by a conscious human being.

Also it looks like their on a taxiway with engines running neither one is listening to ground or minding the store. Yeah that’s against procedure no way in hell is any pilot just barging out of a cockpit to deal with a passenger.
They're not in the air and the show is allowed to take some artistic license for dramatics.
The flight attendant was right though, you can't just stand up in a plane and start talking to all the passengers like that, of course she stopped him because it could only mean trouble. Like what was she supposed to do? Just let this random guy start monologuing to all the passengers ?

ive heard of the title of this show and i honestly thought this was a Comedy Central show until i read the description. This is a drama? lol i now understand the link that brought me here.
Nobody's gonna point out the Red Guardian is just sitting on a plane surrounded by Americans completely unaware they have a super soldier in their midst.
I'm a recently retired airline pilot. I have never seen this show before it popped up on my TH-cam feed. How ironic that the first scene I watch very closely matches my own experience. I was the captain of a flight into one of our hubs, parked on the ramp with a full load of passengers, waiting for our gate to open up when we also heard the news. I made an announcement to the passengers and after a moments silence a few people started to clap, then more and then more and it grew into a great crescendo till it faded just as it had started. People became very solemn as they pondered what this meant for the nation going forward. After we parked I stood at the cockpit door, as I always did, yet no one said goodbye or thanks or nice flight, they just looked at me, much like this young man did when he looked at the captain, nodded and quietly departed the aircraft.

Also 2 of the planes were United, the airline in this clip. And the piloting community is actually small, so if these were real pilots they would probably have known the pilots on the hijacked planes.

@@lopocozo the US Navy did a study in the 1930s that concluded that "any high level moron can be taught how to fly". You dont have to be smart to drive a car either so you're not wrong.
I’m a pilot and one of the United guys I know was supposed to be the captain on United 93
There's a little attention to detail which was probably what made Don pause, the pilot is a united airlines pilot and one of the planes which crashed during 9/11 was a united airlines flight. Second is that the pilot is a captain and it usually takes someone 15 years of flying before becoming a captain so therefore the pilot was most likely flying, terrified and knew the crew on board during 9/11. That's what gives the scene significance and the attention to detail makes it beautiful.
on another less important note, Don's sharp wit to recognize all these details while being upset is impressive.

Meanwhile in the real 2011 most people heard the news about bin Laden, said "Huh, okay cool," and promptly forgot it.
Suuuuure. While everyone in actual reality who were old enough to know 9/11 rejoiced and cheered that bin laden died. And many gathered outside the white house and lost their minds in happiness that one of the worst monsters of the earliest 21st century has finally died. You must be young because no one older during 9/11 would forget this. Don't care what others would say but FUCK...YOU! everyone, was glad that day.
The comment was referring to a quote from "Airplane/Flying High". In which someone says "Surely you can't be serious" which elicits the reply "I am serious, and don't call me Shirley"
Now, it could very likely simply be that I've been watching quite a few Newsroom clips in recent weeks, but the timing of this popping into my recommendations is curious.

As an American, I can tell you it was cutting the head off the snake that had planned the deadly attacks, that had organized and led others, that still planned to do more, and even though another lessor head would grow back in its place, with the main head gone undoubtedly some lives were saved. Probably will never know how or how many, but that night, after a decade, Americans could sleep knowing there was less Evil in the world.

There are many different takes as to why Don stops mid sentence in the middle of his rant.
I think it is because once the pilots enter:
1. He finally realizes the gravity of the situation he has put himself in.
and more importantly,
2. He sees the United logo on the Captain's pin/badge.
United Airlines flight 175 struck the South tower of the World Trade Center
United Airlines flight 93 crashed into a field in Shanksville, PA
Everyone on board both of these planes died,
along with 18 United Airlines employees, pilots included.
And those pilots likely knew (or at least had mutual friends with) the United pilots and crew who died.
My favorite part of this scene is when the two pilots learn to each other and shake hands. Why.
