  • In today's video, Paul Drew and James Ivey check out James's new amp a Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier.
    Although a classic of an era we would all like to forget, this amp has appeared on 1000's of recordings and world tours. Can James convince Paul that this amp is a keeper?
    The Studio Rats are core band members Paul Drew on guitar/production/mixing, drummer James Ivey and Dan Hawkins on bass. They collaborate with singers and musicians to produce radio-ready songs.

    Hey I would love to see the two of you enjoy the amplifier and I didn’t want to write this because I didn’t know how to word it. Match it with the matching cabinet. Also I’ve heard each model varies one from another pretty frequently. The best seen example I have is of the new prometheus head being demonstrated by Kyle bull. The moment he switched to the matching cabinet was like the moment light came from a light bulb. Also the carvin company greatly expressed how when they start with the design of their heads it always starts with the cab. I have an Engl head that just doesn’t not get its full justice through an orange v30 despite. You only hear its true sound on its matching v30. However I have an uberschall that sounds out of this world on that orange. I would keep it a little longer and give it a go even with some emg pairing. Cool video and hope you guys have a really good rest of the night 😊

    i still run a single rec for alot of different styles in a cover band and even use it for church. still love it and have owned single recs for 16 years. before that, mark 4's.

    I was forced to use one of these for a festival gig when my Peavey 50w Classic was nicked. I shoved a 7 band graphic EQ in the front and after messing about with that it was far better than I expected. Not perfect though...

    These 3 channel rectifiers are more versatile than most people think. You have to spend time with them, the eq controls are very different from other amps plus you have the choice of tube or diode rectification, bold or spongy power etc. They do sound better with a boost up front but the same can be said of many Marshalls. This was a pretty shit review of a great amp tbh

    Try it with single coils!
    Otherwise with humbuckers and no TS/SD1 in-between, very easy to get those overly muddy tones.

    I like metal, and i never understood why it's so popular in metal, for me it's a wall of fizzy high end and flubby bass.

    • @cyanidejunkie
      @cyanidejunkie 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Yup… but if you set the bass on 2 and run a tube screamer into the front end it’s a whole new animal. The thing with Boogie is the tone stack is before the preamp stage of the amp… I’m not a fan of that. Be well my friend.

    • @adamfstewart81

      They're actually very versatile amps which often work brilliantly in mixes. The vintage setting is great. The controls are idiosyncratic, highly interactive and often need a boost or pre-eq.

      @@cyanidejunkieAre you sure you’re not thinking of the Mark series? In those amps the tone controls are pre-gain, which is why you also have the graphic EQ. The rectifier, I’m pretty sure, has the EQ post-gain.

    I hate to repeat the sentiment, but as the owner of said amp, that amp REQUIRES a TubeScreamer. I almost returned it after spending a good amount of time tweaking it because it was a wooly mess until I learned about using it in conjunction with the green pedal.

    • @martynm
      @martynm หลายเดือนก่อน

      And the SLO was based on a Mesa Mark series, which itself was derived from a Fender Princeton. Also, the rectifier has a wildly different power amp, so it’s not like a rectifier or SLO sound anything like each other.

    Marshall or Orange does great metal with very little tweaking at lower cost and better reliability.

    I like it on certain recordings, but I hate playing them. I dislike the paired v30 cabs and everything is tubby and fizzy with no mids on its own. I love hi gain that barks and is punchy and not 'buzzy'

    Gotta use a boost for this amp tbh , that does change things more than it does on most amps , makes it a snarling monster, still not tight , but not as wooly

    Nu metal was the big thing in my formative years- Korn released their debut when I was 12 - but I never understood the dual rec thing. Sounded ok and as good as you could make it but not for me. Your other packs are great though so I’ll just enjoy them instead 😊

    I said that after i knew what tone was, aka low gain more expression... andy timmons vs kirk hammett for example. I looked back and was glad i couldnt afford the rectifier at the time it was so popular. Now i look at it and a flaming dumpster fire. No idea why it became so popular but i guess it was due to the black Metallica sound. The one amp from mesa that i love and destroyed the rectifier is the subway rocket. Way smoother and deeper tone. Closer to a mark 2c but its own little world.
