Props my guy, I have a P30 motorhome with no reverse lights and it also having issues starting, so I think you just solved two problems at once for me ! Thanks for the awesome video, big Up from Ottawa Canada.
Good videos, i also need help with the ignition switch, can you please show how to replace it. Im only have a bunch of wires and i don't know how identify them.
Hello Axel My name is Albert I have enjoyed all your informative videos and I thank you. I have a 94 Chevy p30 step van that I bought. It goes in drive but not reverse. It has been sitting up for 3 yrs. we took it to a mechanic and hebelieve the tran.v alves are stuck not allowing it to go into reverse. What do u think?
Not a trans guy, but I have had 2 GM basic automatics that lost reverse. a TH350 and 400. Both needed a rebuild. Just make sure your selector shaft is putting it in reverse, if it is and it won't engage, you probably need a rebuild.
Mate, good video, I am doing the same thing can you tell me please does the edges (not the tongue part )of the neutral safety switch sit or clip into the recess gap in the actual steering column before you screw the two small screws in ? I am finding that my whole NSS is moving after I have done up the two small screws and it looks like it should be recessed in the gap in the column. If you could give me any pointers that would be great. Thanks for you help. Cheers
I got a 1986 chevy kurbmaster mobile kitchen, we changed the battery, ignition switch, starter, I don't get anything when I turn the key on. , do you think is this safety switch?
Hello I have major problem maybe you may know something of it. I have a 1989 suburban 1500 runs good all the time until it gets operating temperature in the summer mostly it will not crank when it's hot and I lose reverse mostly both at the same time and after a half an hour to 2 hours it cools off then it will crank or I manually hop over hot wire to start with a jumper but if it's real hot I still have no reverse until it cools down transmission fluid doesn't seem to make a difference if it's a little bit low but I've always kept an eye on it. New battery new starter new alternator number #2 locomotive cables ground and hot just don't understand what happens very little problems in the cold weather winners it progressively gets worse as the summer days come around like now.
I can't imagine a scenario where the revers issue is the same as the starting issue. I think you have 2 separate problems that both occur when the engine gets hot. I'm not to well versed on tranny issues so no help there. For the start issue, make sure your timing is correct. Then make sure the wiring of those new cables is correct. Let me know.
Thanks for the reply you are on the right track as in not being connected issues I talked to a friend that has a similar SUb from his experience he says reverse requires more fluied pressure to activate being a old transmission with a lot of miles he suggested to add a bottle of STP to the transmissionthis would increase the viscosity of the fluid when it's hot. I did buy the STP treatment but I have not put it in yet as other things happened. A day later it quite running same scenario no crank no crank wait no crank wait wait wait no crank crank start go. Three miles down the road dead in the water. Wait nocrank no crank no crank wait no crank no crank wait crank crank no start crank no start crank? Mmm wait wait. This time crank no start no run crack crack crack no start no start 😠 move to a troubleshooting, no fuel this time. Troubleshoot troubleshoot no fuel. pull the fuel filter no fuel mmm so conclusion fuel pump not running watch videos try to find a relay for fuel pump. Still needed wiring diagrams pinout 4 relay no conclusion on relay. no fuel so call skid-truck to the house. Now waiting on me to get the truck off the ground and pull the gas tank. Considering alternatives are, put in a aftermarket fuel pump on it(EXTERNAL AFTERMARKET FUEL PUMP).. I have as much luck as anybody elseh as replaced fuel pumps MOSTeverybody HAS DONE IT. if aftermarket will pull the fuel through the fuel pump in the tank I'm going to do that. From the conclusion of the fuel pump intermittent failure is possible it has an issue with preventing the vehicle from cranking another reason why I did not like the newer vehicles they put too many bells and whistles on all this stuff I still want my Chevy twice back. 1 wire one vacuum line, go ahead on.
Yes the same here you are on the right track as separate issuesI talked to a friend that has a suburban like mine and he suggested putting a bottle of STP treatment in the transmission as he says the old transmission requires more pressure to engage reverse and when it's hot the fluid is thin and he said the STP treatment would thicking viscosity of the fluid and maybe it will work better.I bought the STP treatment but did not get a chance to put it in for other things happened. I was on a short road trip and again it quit running wait wait wait no crank wait no crank no crank wait wait wait crank start go. Three miles down the road quit running. Wait wait wait no crank no crank wait no crank crank no start. No crank wait again crank no start crank no start 😡 mmm.It' time for more troubleshooting this time no fuel. Troubleshoot pull fuel filter not plugged up no fuel no power. Search for fuel pump relay need wiring pinout more TH-cam videos. Cannot jump relay without good Intel. 6 hours on the road call skit-truck to the house. Waiting on me to get the truck off the ground. Considering a aftermarket external fuel pump instead of pulling the one I got. Need to find out if the pump will pull through the the pump inside the tank. If that's doable I'll put a pump under the truck near the fuel filter. Thank you for your help and reply.
Hi!! I've had issues with needing to replace the starter, often. Looking at this video and looking at my set up, my neutral safety switch is there, but is not plugged up. Could this be the reason why the truck starts when it wants to?
No if it starts on its own, you probably have a problem with the ignition switch. If the NS switch is working properly, the starter should only crank in P and N, not in a drive gear.
Please help!! I’ve got a 1976 Chevy Itasca on a p20 chasis. I can not find out what the green wire is. After I got a new alternator put in my clusters all spin crazily. Any advice?
Where is this green wire you talk of, and where does the other end go? If you put in the wrong alternator, that can cause issues (Internal or external voltage regulator)
Hi my name is Ray and just picked up a 1985 chevy P30 Kurbmaster. I to C/O my neutral safety switch. Thinking it would help fix the starter issue I’m having. Ive gone through two starters and and new 750 CCA battery. I just get a clicking, the star at the end of starter hangs up on the flex plate. Any suggestions?
I have a 1989 p35 theres a funny looking coil or somthing on it dont know what its called has old the metal plates that are falling apart want to replace think its a coil not sure please help
Most Gasoline engine Pvans came with only one battery, the 2nd battery tray was used for the dual battery diesels. The 2nd battery location is also used by the aftermarket to set up and power whatever custom work is done in the rear (food truck, workshop, etc). They use the 2nd battery to 'save' the main battery for starting.
I had to rewire most of my Stepvan as a thief tried to hotwire it and melted a bunch of wiring. You can get the wire schematics at www.faxonautoliterature.com. It makes it so much easier with a good schematic.
Off topic but I have 89 ford f 590 stepvan and I took apart the pocket door handle to get out the lock and have a key made. I was able to make a key but can't re assemble the lock. I put it back exactly like I took apart but the button from the outside will not push out . The spring is doing the exact opposite of what it should be doing. Any thoughts?

Backup camera's are really inexpensive now,if i get a step van for sure i will put one in.
Yep, good idea
Would love to see a tour of the Stepvan. Doesn’t matter how rough it is! There’s a bunch of us Stepvan aficionados!

This can also be a source of idle speed issue. If it isn't adjusted correctly on the TBI models the ECM will call for higher idle.
Good info thanks

I'd honestly like to thank you for this video. Tonight you've helped me get my reverse lights working for my 88 gmc c1500 doing the test light method.

Where is the back up light switch in this vans is the same , Neutral and back up?
Same switch
Can a faulty nss cause intermittent no crank?
Yes, as well as a bad ignition switch

Are you shimming it properly? It needs a bit of clearance to operate the right way without getting hung up on the flywheel.
Where can I get a steering column exactly like that one? I have the same step van just need a steering column
Maybe some of the older truck (pick-up & Blazer) catalog companies may have something similar or close.
I have a 1989 p35 theres a funny looking coil or somthing on it dont know what its called has old the metal plates that are falling apart want to replace think its a coil not sure please help
Where is the part located?
I have a 1987 P30 chevy
The green wire should be the reverse lights
Thanks for the tip
Would this make the dash lights not works as well in a step van?
No, that is a different circuit.
@@AxlesGarage under the hood there's a space for a second battery, what does that battery operate?
