I remember watching this live. I was in middle school at the time, the perfect demographic for MTV. And Pokemon cards. And WWF wrestling. And PlayStation 1 with Gran Turismo. 1998 was a great time to be alive.
I loved 1998, was one of my favorite years growing up like you said... WCW, WWF, N64, MTV, Movies, Music, and so many fun things to do with your friends. 8th grade here.
The kids don’t know……Nobody covered New Year’s Eve like MTV did. Was literally all evening, starting around 4pm, and they had all the hottest A-List musicians and celebrities stop by. Was a time to be alive.
Younger people really don't know how MTV here in the US did do New Year's Eve. This was back when MTV was the big. The network had so much influence on Pop Culture here in the US at that time. I am sure if we tried to explain all of this to younger people they probably would look at us funny & not really understand it.
I love that people are actually watching and enjoying the performances not preoccupied by their phone. I also miss MTV the way it was in the 90s and early 2000s. MTV spring break was one of my favorite things to watch each year, I wasn’t old enough to go lol but I had fun watching it.

Watching MTV, ESPN, PPV movies and sports every day, while playing outside with my friends every day, playing sports, going on adventures, riding bicycle around the town and neighborhood. Then playing Nintendo 64 games every day too, Mario Kart, Diddy Kong Racing, Mario Party, Goldeneye 007, Super Smash Bros, Starfox 64, etc. I was so into MTV, Pokemon and sports as a kid. I miss those days around the 2000s. That 1999-2000 New Year's Eve was epic! I was at my grandmas NYE party with all my family, my big family. I was 12 years old. We partied until like 4 AM. At like 2 AM we went to my grandmas sister's NYE party, which also had her whole family in there. She lived like 2 minutes from us in the same neighborhood. Everyone in the neighborhood was on the streets partying and having a good time. Nothing will ever beat the year 2000 & the years around it 🥲 Hard to believe this was 25 years ago! Geez. How did time fly that fast?!

Also in video games I was sad when Sega called it quits after Dreamcast. So many fun video games in the 90’s, I miss those “edgy” commercials haha
