Here I describe how to use a rotary table as a dividing head and also how to calculate how many turns and holes are required on the plate. This can be used for making gears among many other things.

This is a great instructional video. Thank you! I have an 8" Vertex Super Spacer; never thought of using it as a dividing head before this. I wondered how the dividing head's moving parts worked.
I love the humor of calling it a poor man's dividing head. The 6" Vertex is $1395 USD; AU$ 2124.
I must admit I haven’t actually priced them. The crap I see on eBay from India/China are usually much smaller and way cheaper.
I got this rotary table thrown in with the mill when I bought it second hand.
I guess it’s better value if you figure out multiple uses for it. Maybe it’s the dividing head you have when you don’t have a dividing head 🤠
I wasn’t that happy with this video at the time as I don’t actually make anything only describe making something.
But among my other videos it has done better than most.
It was a strange sale when I bought the mill as the guy I bought from was selling for his dad and didn’t know what anything was actually worth. I ended up putting the price up for him so he felt better about it. Reverse Haggling!

I have been thinking about making another video on this rotary table as it has been mor popular than I expected.
Perhaps machine a spare spur gear for my Atlas lathe or something simple like milling a hexagon
@@DavoShed I have one of the small Atlas Lathes, also a 9" South Bend, and a 13" South Bend that burned up it's motor yesterday......I think I have too many projects.......no, never have too many tools.....Cheers, Paul

Hi Paul,
That’s easy and probably why I never thought to mention it.
Count how many turns of the handle it takes to make one full turn of the table or chuck.
If it’s 40 turns it’s a 40:1 ratio
If it’s 60 turns it’s a 60:1 ratio
Glad you got something out of my videos. It’s strange I’m often in the dark about what people think.
Some videos get thousands of views and others peak at under 100. All good as I’m having fun.

Thank you very much for this video. I have the Vertex 6" table as well and looking at getting the dividing plates for mine as well. I'm hoping I can use one of the off brand dividing head plates since they are 1/3 the price of the Vertex brand and look the same.
I didn’t know there were name brand ones when I bought mine. I think they all copy each other. Good luck and I hope you get the right one first go. Hey we are machinists, we make things fit :)

I see no model numbers on the rotary table at all.
There is a tag that says “Vertex Machine Works Made in Taiwan”
The table it self is a little hard to measure with the chuck on it but it’s either 150mm or 6” in diameter.
If you are talking about the plates and handles I purchased I have no idea.
My eBay purchase history does not go back far enough for that.
I just dug through my pile of collected invoices and couldn’t spot anything.
I recall making my best estimate and taking a leap of faith then being surprised it actually fitted.
Perhaps you can get more details from the seller.
In any case it was worth the trouble as I have made some great stuff with it that would have otherwise been impossible.

@@DavoShed Thanks for the reply, I've taken the gamble and purchased one hopefully identical to yours so will work out ok, I need it for gear cutting on a differential on a 1/4 scale traction engine (3": foot). cheers !!

ZAMAK (or Zamac, formerly trademarked as MAZAK[1]) is a family of alloys with a base metal of zinc and alloying elements of aluminium, magnesium, and copper.
Zamak alloys are part of the zinc aluminium alloy family; they are distinguished from the other ZA alloys because of their constant 4% aluminium composition.[2]

@@DavoShed the Zamak is used in a lot of casting for pleasure craft, and auto parts, not as much as it once was, and it breaks very easy in cold weather....and dissolves in a marine environment.......here is the whole article.....hope you like, also one of my short videos on welding, using the lathe as a tractor to carry the torch.....hope you like......Paul

@@DavoShed You probably have seen it. Old automobile hood ornaments that started bubbling and the chrome flaked off? Cheap navigation lights on smaller boats that bubble, pit and the chrome flakes off? Old die cast toys, toy guns in particular, that have the chrome flake off? All Zamak.

Where did you get the plates?
I found them on eBay. It was hard to know for sure they were going to fit. I discussed this in another comment as well. Shouldn’t be to many to read through 🤠

could you share where you purchased the dividing plates for this table , I have the same one and I would like to make my own gears .this was very helpful video ,thanks.
I found them on eBay. If you search “Dividing Head Plates” you will get heaps of hits. I had to take a leap of faith in the finish after doing all I could to to pick the right ones. Either I got lucky or they all copied each other. They were made in India I think. The quality was better than I was expecting! Glad my video helped. Not one of my best but it’s been popular by my standards :).

Sorry I missed your question. Two people asked almost the exact same question at the same time on a video I made over a year ago.
The label on the rotary table just says Vertex. My table is either 6” or 150mm, hard to say exactly as I can’t measure it with out taking the chuck off the table. There is no model specified. I went looking for details of what Plates I bought and where from but couldn’t find anything as it was a couple of years ago that I put this together. Looking back through this video I think the only critical measurement will be the pitch/diameter of those 3 holes that mount the plate. The other guy asking the same question on this video said he bought something. You may want to ask him what he bought and if it fits when he gets it. I think he should automatically get a notification if someone comments on that thread.
Lucky for you I don’t get that many comments so it should be easy to find. 🤠
Lock is also in dividing head handel you did not see
If you are referring to the spring loaded handle I can’t see a way to lock that.
Unless you are referring to something else?
