    Recording these are a service to the community. Thank you. Many record a few choice lessons, but to have the whole book in one recording is fantastic.

    I literally built my foundation for classical guitar on Sagreras 1. His studies and etudes are so well composed. Thank you for providing these expertly played examples!

      What have you built if you stopped just at first lessons? You should have gone through the first five volumes, at least

    • @bbowjazz

      @@Insidia85 ... that depends on who one studies classical guitar with. I was taught to understand the music via harmonic analysis, playing/singing individual parts, etc. from the beginning of Sagreas 1 while doing technique studies from Pujol. After volume 1, I did a few pieces from Sagreas 2 before moving on to Sor Studies, Brouwer Etudes, Logy and then repertoire pieces.
      There's no hard and fast rule that says a student has to stick with one method's progression of volumes once they have achieved basic competence on beginning to intermediate classical guitar. I'm not in musical competition with anyone, including strangers on the Internet 😀.
      I love Sagreas and still play his pieces occasionally, but as an adult learner with limited time, I'm more focused on technique work and repertoire from Bach, Wiess, Sor, Milan, Torroba, Brouwer, etc.

    One thing I like about these studies is they are short enough as to not take too long to learn, but with enough depth to make them interesting and challenging.

    I played classical guitar for most of my childhood through teenage years, and even though it’s been about 15 years since I stopped playing, there are so many of these lessons that I still remember! No. 44 was a big one for me. Also my mom has a tendency to not throw away anything, so I bet we still have my old lesson books somewhere… it would be cool if I could find them.

    David, your are playing these pieces so beautifully and with such a high-level of musical competency, that those unfamiliar with classical guitar would not likely be able to distinguish these studies from formal repertoire.

    # 2 is all octaves. Very similar to Carcassi’s octave study. In fact, many of them seem to incorporate ideas from Carcassi’s etudes.

    Really enjoying these Sagreras videos - they are so melodic and charming. Thanks for the effort you put into making these videos for us David. I am thinking of purchasing the books - what would be your advice on how to approach them? Just work your way through them or be more selective?

    • @davidjaggs
      @davidjaggs  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You could work through them. I'd say don't just blindly play them but use the early ones to iron out problems in your technique, watch the hands . listen. Try to play them perfectly. Try to maintain a beautiful tone. Think about what each study's technique is for and try to work on that. Use a mirror or better still a camera. Most of all... Enjoy them!

    • @davidjaggs
      @davidjaggs  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Robert. My teacher looked at what he thought my technique needed and selected suitable studies. I was very impatient to progress to the standard repertoire, but I think he kept an eye on things throughout. I believe these days you have to complete a set of Giuliani studies one year, Carcassi the next...etc. it wasn't like that in my day, maybe it should have been. I'd recommend a variety of each, seeing what your technique needs. Hope that's helpful.

    • @tony89718
      @tony89718 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, that is helpful. I plan to go back through the usual Sor, Carcassi, Giuliani studies, and also use the Sargreras books. It has been almost 20 years since I played seriously, my hands are rusty!

  • @gordonmacdonald6519
    @gordonmacdonald6519 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for recording these David. Really useful and beautifully played. One question. Segreras marks his notation with lots of rest strokes where notes need emphasis. Do you play all the rest notes as indicated or simply provide the melodic emphasis with a stronger free stroke?

    • @davidjaggs
      @davidjaggs  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question. In the mid 20th century it was fashionable to play rest strokes wherever possible. In the mid 70s many players started developing free strokes to sound almost as powerful and that persists to this day. I play some rest strokes where indicated but the vast majority are free strokes. Thanks for watching, Gordon.
