    My dad did judo, back in the 1970s in Chicago at a place called The uptown dojo. The uptown dojo at this time was regarded as the best judo dojo east of the Mississippi river. My dad would tell me stories of there being more than 20 black belts at this club, and they would go at it hard. This club even produced some Olympians such as Steve and Irwin Cohen, and Bobby Berlin who won a silver medal in 1984. There were a lot of good instructors, there as well.

      That's very cool. I remember hearing about that gym back in the day. I have a 1984 full size Olympic Flag that was signed by the coach's and U.S. Judo team in 84. Irwin Cohen signed it 1972 Olympian and Steve signed right below his signature near Bob Berland's. Bunch of great people and they fought their hearts out. We Had several other judo players from other country teams sign it as well. My respect to your dad. I have no doubt that they played hard. It is a "Combat Sport". Have a great 4th.

      @@judocc Thanks for commenting, I enjoyed this video. So interesting to me to learn about the way Martial Arts were practiced back in the sixties and seventies, in some ways very different from how they are practiced today. I myself did judo in the '80s and '90s. Unfortunately it wasn't at uptown dojo, because that had been closed at the time. However there were a couple instructors from uptown that did teach at the YMCA, where I did judo at. There was a girl at the club I went to that was really good, she would enter tournaments but would usually lose to Hillary Wolfe. Hillary Wolf being the girl who played Macaulay culkin's sister in Home Alone, and was also in the Olympics for judo.

    Charli trained with some serious top level teachers. Huge respect to her dedication to the arts.
    Very interesting anecdote about Sifu Brendan Lai's (Northern Praying Mantis) Gongfu. For those doubters that think real Gongfu doesn't exist, Brendan Lai in San Francisco was the real deal. Charli said it herself, she was already a skilled competitive black belt in multiple styles when she arrived at Lai's school, and she still got dropped on her ass.
    An important lesson in "emptying your cup" so to speak.

      @@judocc Much respect Charli! On a somewhat related side note, and since you were deep in the Judo community, did you ever come across Bruce Lee's first student Jesse Glover in Seattle? He trained under master Fred Sato and was the man who introduced Bruce Lee to Judo in 1959.

    • @judocc
      @judocc 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@AztecUnshaven I know the name but I never did meet him. Bruce Lee also trained with Wally Jay for grappling and JuJitsu. If you noticed, he beat Sammo Hung in the first fight in "Enter the Dragon" with a judo hold (side note, I learned that hold from watching the old series "I Spy" when they were in Japan. We had never even seen that hold in the Dojo and I started doing it to everyone's annoyance. Good times --LOL. Lee also beat Kareem Jabbar with a Judo hold (Kami Shiho Katame variation) in "The Game of Death" Just sayin. I missed meeting Bruce Lee a few times at Wally Jay's. Just my luck. A side note. My Judo Sensei and friend, Willy Cahill had a business card on his bulletin board at the dojo in the 60's. All it said in cursive writing was Bruce Lee and it had a Yin Yang symbol on it. No address or phone number. He told the story that he was at an airport with his wife. A few guys were cussing in front of her pretty loudly. He asked them to stop and the discussion turned heated. Cahill was tapped on the shoulder and looked around at a "small Asian guy" asked him if he need any help. He said that he didn't want the Asian to get hurt so he declined the offer. The incident subsided without getting physical. You guessed it. It was Bruce Lee before he became well known. Too funny. Was the story true? Probably since Willy had no reason to make it up. Times were so much easier back then.. I'm going to bed. You have a great 4th

    • @judocc
      @judocc 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      BTW, when I was laying down last night I realized I had said the wrong hold on Jabbar. It was actually what we called Kata Gatame in JuJitsu not the Kami Shiho. Brain fart!! Getting old. LOL

    The 60’s and 70’s seemed like a much better time for the martial arts. Even through the 80’s and early 90’s seemed cool but now it seems like most people day to day just focus on UFC fights and not focusing specially on old school styles and the history of martial arts. So many styles go without being talked about.

    Regardless of this man's sexuality, or his journey into transitioning into a female, he or she is just coming off as a blowhard to be quite honest. He just seems to be name-dropping all kinds of people. And he mentions Dan draeger in his other interview. And when he mentions him he acts like he has just a small clue of what that guy was and what he had done. Draeger was one of the reasons we were able to train in martial arts in America in the 50s and 60s, before so many of these people popped up. I'm surprised now that there hasn't been a documentary on draeger. Okay. Aside from that. This woman really just seems more like a bragger than a martial artist. Don't get me wrong. A lot of people don't realize that you have to have a sort of ego to be proficient in martial arts. But this guy is just a little too much for me. I'm not doubting the fact that she is or was a decent fighter, or even judo player. But I am just having a hard time listening to her opinions. Oh well. Such as life
    I would like to apologize right off the bat for any sort of grammatical errors or problems with sentence structure. I'm fairly certain that most of the people reading this will get what I'm trying to say. I'm dictating this into my phone as I am unable to use the keyboard at this time. Also, I would like to apologize for alternating between he and she pronouns. I am still trying to get used to doing so, and I mean no disrespect, even if I think she does come off a little to boastful. And to be honest just her all around presentation isn't very feminine, so as I'm driving and listening to her speak, I am not thinking that I'm listening to a woman. However, I will remain respectful and continue to address her as she would like.

      Well, I am sorry I came off as dismissive regarding Donn Draeger. I only mentioned him because of the conversation I had with my oldest brother regarding him. I had never met him or had any other contact with him. All second hand so there was nothing germane to the conversation. Yes, he was a great judo pioneer as was Ben "Nighthorse" Campbell and George Harris. I would never disrespect them, so if you feel I did, I apologize. The rest of your comment speaks for itself so there is no need for further talk on that subject. Happy 4th of July.

    I go to Nikko jujitsu school (Japanese jujitsu). We still do those type of tournaments it’s called “Sport jujitsu” under the Jujitsu America federation here in America but there is still world games but it only happens every four years. I remember one time we had a tournament at Cahill’s for “Sport jujitsu” I was 15 at the time I didn’t use cups that day and I got hit on the nuts that day aaa good times. Anyways we are going to have tournaments soon on demo, kata, sport jujitsu, and clinics the Ohana July 29-31, 2022

    Slightly off topic but it's something that always irritates me. Those Judo guys back then were ferocious. Kimura, Kenshiro Abe, the list goes on. Incredibly tough people. And people dare to say Bruce Lee was the greatest martial artist of all time. I respect what Bruce did for martial arts but goodness me he would have got crushed against these people. Fabulous Interview, Viking. A bit of reality. Love it.

    Your guest are your guest, your show, but it is weird and disgusting to be honest. I'm just curious about what this transformer has to say about judo back then which I already know about because when I was 13, my first Karate experience was a guy who was old school Karate, Judo, Jujitsu (real Japanese) and freestyle wrestling, and weight trainer and taught us all of it and I'll say this, that mixed martial arts has always existed and I as a kid I wanted to learn everything because when I fought a lot on the streets, I knew it went to the ground but I also realized grappling was stupid in a sense outside the mats because your knees and elbows and other joints get busted up when you grapple like you would on the mats.
    The teacher told me when I asked "What is Judo?" And he told me it's japanese wrestling with throws, chokes, and locks and jujitsu is judo and karate together where as karate is karate and Judo is Judo so it goes deep and it pisses me off that these new age Gen Z weeniesç nowadays think everything comes from them and how they disrespect Bruce Lee just because he didn't fight as a pro sport fighter and it's stupid because one is for competition and the other for self perseverance. When I discovered Lee as a late teen, it came together and that's where I believe Bruce excelled and that is his teaching and philosophy about hand to hand combat.
    Also, any wrestler who was from a rough background like I was because I was doing boxing as a kid and knew how to punch and if someone like me started wrestling and got good at it and someone like them instead of Dan Severn, they would've smashed Royce or even a real representative of catch would've destroyed Gracie because Catch guys put boxing into their repertoire.

    Dude, we are from Generation X, or whatever they call us. We, as far as I studied, are the only generation that actually looked at people as individuals. Either you could do a job or you could not. If you wanted a job you tried or you moved on. We made no excuses. Your actions was your consequence of your actions. The only blame you had was your arrogance. Arrogance is ignorance. We care not about the color of your skin, or gender, or you sexual preferences. You can do the job or you can’t. Sometimes failure is a reward. This LGBTQBU, or whatever this organization pretends to represent, Does not have the knowledge that Charli has. Nor do the Christians that unscribed to you because they disagree. Most of them just lived a life just like of there supposedly enemies. Just remember Gen X, or whatever they call us, confuses everyone. That is because we will try to walk in everyone’s shoes and not throw the first stone. The real question is who would when in a fight?… Batman or the Punisher?
