@@RamblinPam thanks Pam your video helped me to decide on the Roomette. I have 2 nights on the train. I'm leaving from Merced CA going home to where I grew up in Topeka KS. I am picking up a vehicle Ford Escape I inherited along with other things. I'll be driving back to CA. I thought I'd come back through the valley of the God's. Wish me luck. 😁👍🏻

Pam i have watched many Amtrak videos on TH-cam, and i loved how you added some history to the places you are passing by on the train. I can bet you good money Jeb Brooks does not know about the Hobbit door. There is some footage were you told us sorry about the rain on the window, i thought it made the experience much better for those of us watching it was like we were there with you. Loved your video.

Nice...I'm trying to mimic this exact trip (Flagstaff to KC) in October. Maybe stop in Raton or Las Vegas (NM) for a night or two, and then continue. (nice job editing this, too)

Loved your video! Will be doing this route in a few weeks to visit the Grand Canyon. KC to Flagstaff in roomette; Flagstaff to KC in coach. Not sure how a night in coach will be, but willing to try it. Hoping I can hang in observation car in the wee hours of the morning if need be.

DON'T DO IT! Did you read those first 3 words of this comment? Read them again: Don’t Do It! My family and I just completed a round-trip via coach on the Southwest Chief from Flagstaff to Kansas City. My wife and I are 59 and 62, respectively, and have never endured a worse traveling experience in our lives. We had hoped it would be, based on how we perceived Amtrak, a fun, cozy, comfortable and clean experience. Not! Without getting into all the gory details, here is the basic scoop: The coach cars are old, dirty, stained, poorly maintained and smell funny (like dirty, moldy dishtowels). We spoke to a 60 year old woman who had last ridden the Southwest Chief when she was 19 and said the cars were unchanged! The bathrooms are disgusting and tiny (your knees touch the door when you’re on the toilet). The water they provide to refill your bottles tastes terrible and only dribbles out of the spigots. There are 110V electric outlets but no USB ports, so you need to bring power bricks with you for your USB devices or to charge your phone. Many of the riders appear down-and-out, with body odor (leading us to believe that Amtrak is more of a commuter train for people who can’t afford cars, rather than for tourists looking for an experience). A homeless-looking guy got on at one stop and asked if there was any free food, and of course was told "no". To top all that off, the ride was 26 hours of bumpy, bone-rattling bounce and roll. I felt like I was in an offroad vehicle bouncing across rocky backwoods terrain, not in a train car on smooth rails. My back is still sore from the ride. You’re taking your life in your hands going down the steep staircase to the restrooms-my wife almost fell down the stairs at one point when the train bucked wildly as she was making her way down. By some miracle we managed to get a few hours sleep each way, which was probably only due to sheer exhaustion. Our 18-year old daughter slept longer, but she could probably sleep through a hurricane and earthquake combined. The whole trip they kept trying to sell us meals available in the dining car-Who could eat “real” food with a ride like that? Upchuck time! (Also, not cheap: I think it was $25/person for lunch and $45/person for dinner-- the train was relatively empty so they were trying to coerce coach passengers into buying meals since they didn't have enough ridership to sell enough otherwise). Good thing we packed tons of light snack type food (fruits, nuts, peanut butter, granola bars) and that kept us sustained, with just coffee and tea (and ramen noodle soups for dinner) from the café car. When we finally arrived at Union Station we had minor heart failure: We had checked 3 bags and they only had 2! After a rigamarolle they finally found the missing bag, which thankfully was in the station and not still on the (long-departed) train. When we did get the bags they were completely caked with dust. The conductors both ways were gruff, unfriendly and unhelpful-had to literally chase them down to ask questions. The return train arrived in Flagstaff 3 hours late! (3 hours late? What if we had an appointment afterward?) The trip cost us $859 for 3 adults round trip, and was not worth a penny of it. We were trying to determine if Amtrak may be a more affordable alternative to flying, since we may be periodically commuting back and forth to KC from Flag in the future for business. Hmmm.. Let’s recap: (1) Dirty. (2) Old. (3) Smelly. (4) Cramped. (5) Bumpy. (6) Unfriendly. (7) Late. (8) Almost lost our bags. (9) No USB. (10) Dusty luggage storage.. Will never get on it again. You’d literally have to pay ME.
