    Hey Ken! Loved the bands that shared the singing. The Beatles, Kansas, Yes, just to name a few. Great harmonies! Now when you try to join a band they ask can you sing? Yes, great you're hired! Lol. Forgot to mention The Beach Boys. Incredible harmonies. Thanks for another killer vid Ken. Happy weekend to all!

      Yes, it's true. Singing musicians have the edge over others at auditions. It's often the deciding factor. Have a great weekend, Jeff!

    Tommy Shaw always communicates empathy for the uncertainty and fear of the characters in his songs. Love his emotional delivery over technical showing off.

      Agreed! There is some theater here, it is Tommy Shaw as "The Renegade". The Renegade was a bit anguished. The Renegade didn't have time to fret over the small things. The Renegade was a bit preoccupied with other things. But his message came through, warts and all.
      Contrast that with "Too Much Time On My Hands". See, now on a song like that it is fitting that Tommy spent more time rehearsing and perfecting. :-)

    Just saw them a couple hours ago in NYC and his voice was insane! He’s 68 and his voice sounded like the studio versions from the 70s. He’s taken amazing care of his voice and they actually ended with this song in the encore. Great show.

    I was lucky enough to see Styx in August of 2017, and at 15..it didnt disappoint. For his age, his voice was amazing and Shaw is now the heartbeat of that band with his vocals.

    Thanks for doing this one, Ken. Tommy Shaw is such an incredible singer, songwriter, and guitar player. Further, every member of Styx can sing and play their instruments incredibly well. Their live shows were evidence of that. No auto tune or backing tracks to be found. Just pure musicianship.

    Tommy Shaw was recently on an episode of Live from Daryl's House. The first song they did was "Blue Collar Man". Daryl and his band are, of course, fantastic musicians. After the song, however, you got the vibe they were looking at each other thinking, "Wow, okay, now THAT'S a rock star!"

    • @nomo9344
      @nomo9344 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ehh, I watched it again and I stand corrected...it was someone else who said they wanted to essentially get Blue Collar Man out of the way. I agree with J, I think they were not quite expecting what Tommy brought to the room.

    • @grilledspaghetti
      @grilledspaghetti 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think they "got it out of the way" out of respect and anticipation. Otherwise it would just have been an elephant in the room. That was the vibe I took.

    Ken, thanks for selecting this song to review - one of my all-time favorites. Tommy Shaw cut his teeth in the dive bars of Montgomery, AL, while still in high school. He's a very talented guitar player as well. SO much talent from the southern states. I teach a class on the sociology of popular music at a state university, and I always give props to my Southern brethren. And, as always, I enjoy your detailed analytical perspective. I don't care how many times I've listened to this song, I always go crazy after the softer intro ends and then Dennis DeYoung screams before the lyrics "the jig is up". It builds you up slowly in the beginning and then, you reach musical orgasm with that scream!!! YEEEEEAAAAAHHHH!!! This is my favorite song from Styx and after Renegade, I like the song "Fooling Yourself" (which has some excellent lyrics). I even followed Tommy Shaw into the band Damn Yankees and continued enjoying his vocals there too.

    Your videos are the BEST.
    We are cut from the same cloth. My girl always says (as I've said before), that we are two pees in a pod.
    The thing is, I'm an English major but I absolutely CAN NOT sing. I can write, however, and my brilliant musician friends have always marveled at that.
    They came into the studio to help me record my first album. They were amazing. Only I sucked 'cause I'd only been singing for a week. I wish I had your talent and range. Fooey.

    Tommy Shaw is one of the greatest vocalists. Because he still sounds the same. I love this song especially because it's like a Bohemian Rhapsody a bit.

    I think you forgot to put the link to your cover of this song in the description... but I looked it up. Yup... you crushed it! Killer job! After all these years Tommy Shaw can still hit those notes and still sounds fantastic, much like Mickey Thomas who can still do the same. I was in high school when this song came out and it became and has remained my favorite Styx tune. Thanks for the run-down on this one.

    Lots of people dis Dennis Deyoung as a balladeer, actually Dennis is responsible for "Renegade" sounding like it does because Tommy Shaw didn't originally write it as a rock song. Styx as a band were true team players in their prime.

      Tommy had been listening to Alan Parsons Project at the time, and it inspired what he initially presented to the band. Dennis suggested they turn the energy up, and the song became what it was. Crystal Ball, another Tommy Styx song, was also a different beast before Dennis and company put their spin on it. Check out (I think Harvest Crystal Ball on TH-cam to find the pre-Styx version.

    So glad you did Styx again and Tommy Shaw excellent. Very rarely do you find another singer in a band when there is already a lead singer. I can think of Night Ranger and Triumph that go back and forth with lead vocals. Those are two drummers and not guitarist.
