Thank you Nick for doing this as I realized I had my gain structure sequence wrong. I never hit distortion but never had my gain setup correct...many thanks
OK - Just a tip - You started off textbook by turning the gain/master volume/faders all to zero. You found a pumping track and lifted the gain so not to clip. You put the fader flat out and lifter the master to match the gain input. Loved it. Everything was set to optimum but then you said I like to keep my faders flat out and alter the volume the the input gain knob??? - just in case you accidentally slid the fader to full volume. So you have defeated the object of setting the correct input gain. They are both there for a reason my friend.
So simple but great advice! I made a little cheat sheet, i cant believe when we go out dancing salsa etc. the Dj’s Music just keeps getting louder and louder as each mix comes in ! I used to keep my gains at 12 O clock but it was too high believe.
I have a question, in the gain configuration in Serato do you still have it at 92 db as default or do you have to change it so as not to saturate? Another question is it good to use auto gain??? Greetings from Mexico, you are my odolo master 🙌🏻
I just found out recently that if you change the auto gain from 92 to quieter one at the top it will help keep songs from getting too loud works great!
Hey Nick a great video was just wondering do you monitor the master volume knob by ear if you have a ddj 400 where there is no meter to control master output volumes.
Hey Nick, great explanation. Since you are on the topic, can you then explain how you gain your mic receiver and mixer.. If you aren't sound checking @ the Intro's volume for example while the room is empty it always takes some tweaking. Do you prefer gaining up on the mic receiver more than using the mixer input? For reference I am using a Shure QLX-D's Thanks!
With the QLX-Ds you have amazing control of volume on the receiver, built in attenuators etc as you know - so I'm deff a fan on gaining up not he mic receiver more than using the mixer output. But it depends on the mixer. You just have to play around until it sounds just right.
Thanks for the video bro! Question???? I just started using an external mixer with my controller. I'm always a little confused at which one do I use for my overall control. In your opinion, do you set up the external mixer like described in this video, or Main control everything from your controller? Hope this makes sense... Thanks
What about the volumes that are coming from Serrato, there is a master there too and a track volume.. so in reality we dealing with 5 volume knobs 2 being digital right ?
Have you made a video of how to set knobs/levels & what order, when using a controller & an external mixer together? If so what's the video called, if not I'd greatly appreciate it. I'm using a Denon MC7000 Controller & an Allen & Heath Zedi-10FX External Mixer. I have the controller directly into 2 channels of the external, 2 wireless mics into 2 additional channels of the external mixer, that mixer passing thru the dbx gorack, & then into ev powered speakers. Thanx
This is great - can you talk a bit more about the auto-gain in Serato? I notice my levels on Serato itself seem to go into the red, no matter how low I set the auto-gain. Do I need to worry about that if all my levels on the hardware stay in the green?
I run my controller into a small (4 channel) mixer then out to my speakers. Where should the channel and master volumes on the mixer be? I use the mixer mainly so I can have a couple of mic channels...
It depends on a lot of variables so you'll have to do some experimenting. First, I'd set your 4 channel mixers master and DJ line to 0 DB (up to the dark line) and then do the steps in this video for your main controller. If everything seems tooo loud then turn down your 4 channel mixer
Keep in mind if you boost the mids it will bring up the sound levels. Always important to set at 0db or just above at +1db, that way if you slightly boost your mids or lows it won’t clip. Also if you have two tracks playing at once with full frequencies that will also bring the sound level up significantly, possibly going into the RED!!!
One thing I never liked is when we lower the Gain, Your headphones volume will Lower also. Yeah when the gain is low now I have to turn up your headphones knob like all the way. Is there a way around this. I would like to lower gain so there’s no clipping. But now my headphones are low low. And I have to really turn up the headphone knob to almost all the way,Thanks!
Hey Nick i really enjoy all your videos, keep up the good work brother but it looks like you made a common mistake here. The Gain is a INPUT volume not a OUTPUT volume. These are two different things, the gain allows the signal to come in from the source into the channel strip so you can see just how strong your signal is. Knowing this you can set your gains accordingly so the next song wont come in super loud or too low. Your channel and master volume is your OUTPUT volume you adjust for your crowd. The only DJs that should put their channel volumes at 10 and adjust output volume with the gains are the turntablist doing a heavy duty routine. I think wedding DJs saw what the turntablists were doing and started copying their mixer settings. Stay up brother Nick PEACE!!
Loved this video but I disagree with your checklist. You said you need to first turn your speaker on but I was always taught to turn speaker on last because of the power spike when turning on your audio mixer.
The fart noise at 3:41 lmfao
This explanation was perfect! Hopefully, DJs worldwide can see this to "help your algorithm" Lol
Haha thanks bro! Me too! lol
Thank you, this video was very helpful.
Steven Garza thank you for watching!
@NickSpinelli THANK YOU! I knew not to red line but i was doin wrong nonetheless. Preciate you Bro! Im gon follow this way from now on!!!
Big thank you homie. Like I've said before, you're bringing a lot of people up to speed REALLY quickly with all these videos. RESPECT!
Super great, and informative song with LOTS of good tips!
Good and easy way to explain it. Thanks
Nick Hughes DJ Phat Mack thanks bro!
Is there a video where you connect a controller to a line mixer THEN gains?
Thank you Nick for doing this as I realized I had my gain structure sequence wrong. I never hit distortion but never had my gain setup correct...many thanks
Jim Horn thank you for watching Jim!
@@NickSpinelli if you're not red lining you're not headlining
Hey Nick, great video!! How about using external hard drives in an upcoming video?
Good idea!
Great video
Thank you
Hi Nick,
How does this change when you use a mixer?
OK - Just a tip - You started off textbook by turning the gain/master volume/faders all to zero. You found a pumping track and lifted the gain so not to clip. You put the fader flat out and lifter the master to match the gain input. Loved it. Haha Salsa is always played at the loudest of volumes I feel like! Thanks Allen!
How about with an external mixer?
I have a question, in the gain configuration in Serato do you still have it at 92 db as default or do you have to change it so as not to saturate? Another question is it good to use auto gain??? Greetings from Mexico, you are my odolo master 🙌🏻
I just found out recently that if you change the auto gain from 92 to quieter one at the top it will help keep songs from getting too loud works great!
Nick, Since you add the mixer where do you keep the RCF FX10 knobs in comparison?
Nice video, oddly enough my Numark Scratchs LED's are all red except the very top one, which is white. Great design choice by Numark for sure.
great video contents, especially on the part of the FART, plugin !!!!!! lol
Haha thank you thank you
Was dying when you said “virtual dj” and the deuce dropped lol
Lmao
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Poor Virtual DJ. Those fools get unfairly shit on. Please leave those douchebags alone.
Hey Nick a great video was just wondering do you monitor the master volume knob by ear if you have a ddj 400 where there is no meter to control master output volumes.
And with a separate mixer? Same concept applies?
Four color Zach is the king of keeping his s9 in the Red Red. 🛑
DJ_RueBoi haha FCZ can do whatever he wants, he’s the fucking man.
Nick Spinelli agreed! He’s a dope DJ
DJ_RueBoi he’s one of my all time favorites
How about when your recording i noticed when my master is at the level you put it at my recording is low 🤔 any fix for that
Dentist says: Open up
0:31 @NickSpinelli responds: Knaaaaaabs!
lol 👍
lmao!

Same knob set up with external mixer ???
If I use an external mixer with my DJ controller, what is the order of adjust the knobs? Thx
Thanks for the video bro! Question???? I just started using an external mixer with my controller. I'm always a little confused at which one do I use for my overall control. I asked the same question. Have you found out the answer?
What about the volumes that are coming from Serrato, there is a master there too and a track volume.. so in reality we dealing with 5 volume knobs 2 being digital right ?
How to setup the mixer? Should it be at unity? Im using mackie profx6v3

Try bringing your master down in Serato to help fix that!
I run my controller into a small (4 channel) mixer then out to my speakers. Where should the channel and master volumes on the mixer be? I use the mixer mainly so I can have a couple of mic channels...

This would have been a great time to review your 6 or 8 channel mixer and explain how it gives you more head room and better sound.
Maybe in a future video....
That would be great

Need this video for controller/external mixer set up😢
Is your external mixer eq and DJ controller eq settings supposed to mirror each other?
men i really wish somebody can make a video of how to set your cross fader knobs for scraching and setting bothe together . 🙏🙏🙏
This is the only way I get gains since the gym closed. Also, that fist was 2 weeks of no White Claw social events.
Haha yes that's exactly what that fist was! #ArthurFist

I just commented on the same thing - then read your comment. I totally agree with you.
But, if you ain’t red lining, you ain’t headlining. 🤷🏻♂️
Bayardo Rugama lmao
😅
Hmmmm did no one notice Nick passed some gas near the end?? Lol!
Weatherdog Entertainment lmao that was directed at Virtual DJ 😂😂
Why VDJ? What did I miss??? Now I have to go play it again.

Virtual DJ 3:41 (Fart). Lol well played Nick but still love VDJ..

I heard that too!
Stop eating beans Nick I heard that 😂
Loved this video but I disagree with your checklist. You said you need to first turn your speaker on but I was always taught to turn speaker on last because of the power spike when turning on your audio mixer.
That being said, still a huge fan and I look forward to more videos!!
I agree, what I should have specified in the video is that my mixer is already turned on, then I turn on my speakers then I set the mixer.
🤔🤔🤨
RCF (all the way up) lol!
Lou Guzzo yessirrrrr
If you're not red-lining, you're not headlining! xD

Was that a fart at 3.40 lol😂

Your fart had auto boost 3:41
I thought EVERY dj HAD to use an external mixer ??
It is 1 million times better to use an external mixer
Gain Structure.... RED WON'T MAKE YOU BREAD...
Jimmy Spin lmao that’s a good one!
