The Hmong leaf players of Sapa

Hmong music is an important part of culture. Because Hmong Language is tonal , there is a close connection between Hmong music and the spoken language.
Here, Giang Thi Pang introduces us to two instruments played by the Hmong in Sapa. The nplooj is a leaf that is curled up and positioned in the mouth so it vibrates when it is blown. It makes loud, very high pitched sounds that can be heard from far away. The varying pitches are made by pulling on the leaf and blowing to make certain tones that relate to words in the Hmong language.
The nplooj was traditionally used late at night in the days before mobile phones. When young lovers wanted to alert their partners to the fact they were waiting outside and wanted to meet.
Sometimes softened in the flames of a fire before use, culturally, people are fearful of playing the nplooj while in the forest. People worry that in doing so, they may attract evil spirits.

Trong văn hóa của người Hmong, âm nhạc đóng một phần rất quan trong trong cuộc sống. Tiếng Hmong là ngôn ngữ âm nên nó có sự liên kết rất chặt chẽ giữa âm nhạc và tiếng nói.
Nplooj là một công cụ dùng lá để thổi. Cuộn lá lại để thổi sẽ tạo ra âm thanh rất to và được nghe thấy từ xa. Khi thổi các nốt thanh sẽ tạo ra khác nhau tùy thuộc vào độ căng của lá, hòa quyện cùng với ngôn ngữ của người Hmong tạo ra những bản nhạc sinh động.
Thổi lá nplooj truyền thống ngày xưa thường được chơi vào đêm khuya trước khi có sự xuất hiện cua điện thoại di động. Đây cũng là cách để các đôi trai gái tìm hiểu nhau. Trong giai đoạn tìm hiểu, chàng trai sẽ dùng lá để thổi để báo cho bạn gái là mình đang đợi ở ngoài.
Theo tục lệ của người Hmong, hơ lá trước ngọn lửa để làm mềm lá để thổi tốt hơn và cũng để xua đuổi tà ma, điềm xấu.
