So nice for a change that Desi Arnaz gets recognition, not just Lucy. Love the honesty, Love of her parents.just ❤ wonderful. I am Latin and it is refreshing.
This is great! I never get tired of Lucie talking about her parents, their work, how it influenced her, all the amazing things she learned in the process, you name it. A conversation with this lady is an education, and a fascinating one at that.
Lucie Arnaz is one of the most satisfying interviews I’ve ever heard and I’m addicted to old Hollywood inyerviews. She’s clear, well spoken , tells the audience what she knows they want to hear and is very honest. I can’t believe you only gave her 20 minutes .
Lucie Arnaz has done a wonderful job in keeping her parents legacy alive. Lucie was great in the movie The Jazz Singer with Neil Diamond. She also was great in The Black Dahlia and an episode in Law & Order where she plays a hard nosed owner of a cosmetic company. Also, Desi Jr. is entitled to his privacy without having to prove anything to anyone. Lucie Arnaz is handling everything just right IMO by herself. ❤️😉Great interview by Ben. Thank you 🙏🏻
Lucie Arnaz deserves a tremendous amount of respect and accolades across multiple spectra. Not only is this woman a remarkable artist and performer in her own right, but I salute her for the way she has handled queries about her parents over the past decades with empathy, candor and tremendous sensitivity to the challenges both her mother and father faced. Not only does she come across as forthright AND fair, but she really seems to have made an earnest effort to try to learn from those accumulated experiences and apply that knowledge to her life and outlook in a positive way.
An entertainer in her own rite, how proud her parents would be at how she is preserving their legacy as honest and straightforward never sugarcoated to fit a mold.
Just when I thought I’d be going through withdrawal. Thanks for the early Christmas present! I could have listened to Lucie Arnaz all day! She was great!
i am totally loving every episode of this story. after decades of watching the show- it really shows the difference between a script and reality tv shows. it was magic for sure
Here's to Lucie Arnaz's continued spirit of excellence--she is an indefatigable bridge to yesterday, yet always keeping it fresh and relevant to today...and making us all feel included in a legacy that has brought much joy! ~~R-A A
Vivian Vance to Lucie: "So, girl: what are going to do during your hiatus?" = "Oh, I thought I'd go to Hawaii" = Viv: "What're, nuts? You're a theatre person; you've got to go on stage and perform!"
This was a Bonus worthy of the title. Really enjoyed spending this time with her. Maybe another bonus episode? And why wasn't Desi, Jr involved in this? He's like the elephant in the room.
Simply a great podcast and classy. I wonder who The Plot Thickens will be about next. I am enjoying this. It's like we're being taken back in time when there was no tv and we get to experience how our grandparents and great-grandparents listened to the news and the storytelling. So I am going to get popcorn and look at the movie on Prime Video "Being The Ricardos"
Lucie is such a trouper and a wonderful singer. I got to see her excellent live tribute show to her dad. I think it's called Latin Roots. Desi Jr. was in the show too. Glad that she always honors her brilliant, charming father.
Thank you, Ben. This was a brilliant piece overall. It shows so much about the two of them that we didn't know, and I think you were able to do a piece on Lucy while filling a gap in our appreciation for and understanding of Desi.
Lucie should check out her dad's interviews on TH-cam...there's always new comments and always praise thrown his way. He's worshipped as the genius he was. Very few negative xomments
Such a fantastic series! And Lucie. So much admiration for her. She had a lot to navigate through in her formative years and has come out on top and with such grace and love for her parents and their journeys. Great understanding. Ty for this bonus episode. May Desi and Lucille's family be ever blessed! May their children and their children's children continue to be blessed. Lovely episode. I could've listened for so much longer. Great job!
That’s so awesome that Lucy had a good relationship with Desi’s second wife even if it wasn’t easy for Desi to accept Gary on any level. I know a guy whose parents and stepparents are best friends
Desi Arnaz was the heart of I Love Lucy. Lucille Ball was never funnier as when she when Desi played against her. He brought true warmth to the show. Watch Desi interact with little Ricky compared to Lucille Ball interacting with little Ricky. Desi demonstrates true warmth.
Oh my Gosh yes please and thank you very much for this bonus episode! I have immensely enjoyed this series and I can't stop listening to it. Merry Christmas!
Lucille Ball was part of my mom's generation which is The Quiet Generation. They went through incredible ordeals during some of the most difficult periods of history. Yet, they never dwell on them, blow their own horns nor rest on their laurels. It's after they're gone that we realize how tough and unselfish they were. Most of the current celebrities and politicians could not hold a candle to them, neither in character nor in ethics.
Desi Arnaz never got enough credit for his participation in I Love Lucy. (I was going to abbreviate the title like The Andy Griffith Show TAGS, and then realized it would spell ILL. lol
Ben should circle back to Lucie and talk about other Hollywood figures. She met some of the greats, even if as a child. They're almost all gone now, so she should be able to spill some good stuff. If Ben doesn't want to do it - Lucie should guest on Gilbert Gottfried's podcast. Do 3-segments over 3 weeks - minimum!
I’ll never forget Lucy telling Barbara Walters that Desi was a “loser.” Her exact words. He had it all - beautiful family, wonderful career - but because of his demons he had to throw it all away. He was compelled to self-sabotage. His addictions to sex, gambling and alcohol destroyed their family and the show. Lucie may appear to be candid about her parents but she avoids addressing this. It’s curious that no interviewer has ever asked Lucie to comment on her mother’s remarks to Barbara Walters.
I watched that interview. What I heard wasn't that she labeled him a loser but that the "had to lose," i.e., was self-destructive and had low self-esteem.
Lucie has made a career out of talking about mostly Lucy, She loves to talk about her father she should do something about.. PS Speaking of women's lib I Love Lucy did two episodes "Job Switching" & "Equal Rights"
No link to the original podcast? This is a "bonus" episode, but the only thing that came up in my feed. Never heard of this before... gotta help a new listener out a little!
- Yes, Lucie had a father as well as a mother. Yes, he made it all happen. Yes Lucie is right for saying that for the last 70 years she's been trying to balance the affection between her mom and dad since her mom receives all of the love (she said it as a reply to me.) BUT, while doing that, she makes herself sound really resenting towards her mom, it's like she talks fondly of her dad (and her stepmother,) on the account of her mom, where she talks about with a nasty tone which, for someone from the outside, it sounds horrible. So Yes, it feels like Lucie has a great deal of resentment towards her mom. Watch all of the interviews I've been watching one after the other, and you see/hear what I mean. - Yes, Desi was the person who made it all work, but it it weren't for Lucy's persistence, non of it would have worked. So Both deserve a great deal of credit. **Gary gives me a sense of something fishy. Once Lucy married Gary, things turned to the worse. I read somewhere that Edith almost got divorce from Desi as well. What we're watching are indeed two extraordinary talented people, who were amazing at what they did and loved it so very much. They didn't want to go back home because they had a "Good marriage" on set. Can anyone tell me what's up with Lucie and Yiddish?
I agree with you - Lucie Arnaz always was very positive about her father - less so with her mother. Remember Lucille Ball always gave Desi the credit - being a great creative person, great businessman etc. Saying he did it all - Lucille Ball jeopardized her career by insisting that Desi be on the show when CBS did not want him, the sponsors did not want him - both parents decided to take it on the road and the public wanted him. Unfortunately, Desi was an addict: sex, booze, gambling - before he married Lucy, during the marriage, and afterwards. His 2nd wife almost divorced him too. Both wives really loved him but his addictions were very serious. When Lucie Arnaz said her father worked himself to death - by in the middle of 1955 his drinking was out of control - drank when he woke up, almost drunk by lunch. When Desi sold his shares of Desilu Studios to Lucy (1962) the company was losing money - his decisions were not helping the company. When Lucy sold to Gulf and Western in 1968 she sold it for 17 million. She was the head of Desilu Studio, as well as acting and producing The Lucy Show. One assumes that she was at the studio am to pm for these 3 roles. Certainly less time with the children. (Also in 1968 made the film Yours, Mine, Ours with Henry Fonda. I think by 1960 when they divorced he was 43 - he looked so much older cause of his drinking. Lasted 3 more years producing the Lucy Show and Head of Desilu for 2years, however he asked Lucy to do that show to increase revenue for the company. I do feel these two helped each other in any way they could and fortunately they both married people who were good to them and to their children - and who were able to accept that Lucy and Desi would always be connected (Desi sent Lucy flowers on their anniversary at least for 15 years after their divorce.) I love both Lucy and Desi but I sure would not marry anyone one or stay with anyone with one of those addictions, no less all 3.
Lucie Arnaz does a good interview as she is very chatty and articulate. But what stands out is her strong love for her father and a prickly dislike of her mother. As executive producer of new movie "Being the Ricardos", this bias is evident. The movie touched on Desi's womanizing, but failed to mention the alcoholism, gambling and his privileged upbringing. Enjoyed "The Plot Thickens" podcast series on Lucille Ball, but not the recent movie.
I agree, Lucie Arnaz always minimizes her father's addictions but stresses her mother's always be work oriented even at home. (Mother was acting and producing The Lucy Show and Here's Lucy and running Desilu Studio, which she took over in 1962 when it was losing money; selling it in 1968 for 17 million.)
This was great indeed but I'm kind of surprised Lucie raved about Being the Ricardo's so much!.. It was just "Okay" It seemed more about trying to obviously pander for an Oscar nod then anything.. & I know it's about there real life but it would have helped if Nicole wasn't so Horrible at being the character of Lucy Ricardo! in those scenes it was kinda cringe, Not to mention as kind of a Lucy buff myself it bothered me how the timeline in that movie is not all accurate and they crammed what they did into supposedly a week of shooting the show, It also didn't help how obviously botoxed out Nicole is and we all know there was no botox then.
Also I felt that Javier Bardem, while a decent actor, did not remind me of Desi at all - who was such an attractive man. So complaints about Nicole's botoxed face - were akin to my feeling about Javier unattractive look and his singing and dancing - were a good try, but did not come up to Desi Arnaz. To this day, I am afraid that I still love Lucy and Desi - warts and all - and appreciate what they did for us - back in 1951 - which lasts till this year 2023. Laughter and Love.
Yes, I agree - the children did have two parents both Lucy and Desi who totally loved them (Lucie and Desi Jr.) and married people, Edith and Gary, who were great step parents. Yes, there was stress in the marriage, the parents got divorced, but continued on a friends and supported each other till the day Desi died. I totally appreciate Lucie Arnaz keeping the flame alive (Lucy Desi Home Movies - which won a special Emmy Award) and her willingness to share information and add to the dialogue about her amazing parents. I have to say that I Love Lucy is my favorite show ever - as I child it came into my life with our first tv in 1951. While i have not watched tv in many years I watch all the shows on Amazon Prime - during Covid -19 a show a day brought a lift to my life. Again thank you Lucy and Desi
I really appreciate Lucie's balanced appreciation of both brilliant parents as well as acknowledging their weaknesses.
Desi was a business genius, and a terrific “straight man.” A powerful conga player too.👏
So nice for a change that Desi Arnaz gets recognition, not just Lucy.
Wow. Lucie has such a big ❤ To both understand and forgive her mother for being such a hardworking and 'not always there' mom. Kudos to Lucie. 💪❤❤

Agreed this should have been much longer.
TCM should allow Ms. Arnaz on as a guest programmer someday.
Great idea, I already know what film she’ll pick….
Thank you 🙏🏻
She's so down to earth and good to listen to.
Lucie Arnaz deserves a tremendous amount of respect and accolades across multiple spectra. This podcast is terrific! Lucie Arnaz is remarkably generous and endearing.
WOW!! A BONUS episode. Merry Christmas to ME! THANK YOU for this fun, unexpected surprise!
I am lovin The Plot Thickens. This Lucy season was the best. Keep’em comin!!

Lucy used to say about herself: "I'm not funny. What I am is brave"
Who is the artist that drew this wonderful picture of Lucille Ball used here? I love it!
Lucie is great, Ben is so right she is a good combination of her Mom and Dad.
It would be wonderful to hear Lucie sing the theme song she created for her mom's final series--the theme song that was rejected.
Enjoyed this bonus episode. Lucie just come across so delightful. Great job with the interview Ben!
I agree with Lucie - I want to hear her talk more!!
And now I Love Little Lucy. Great interview, especially after hearing the whole series. Thank you.
So thankful for the bonus. Indeed.
One of the best series I've ever listened to. Funny...i love the music as much as the talking.
Well done!! The bonus audio was an early Christmas present for me. I think I could listen to you interview "Little Lucy" all day and never be bored
This is a great series with more insight about Lucy in a quiet layered presentation.

Right? Lucie is talking about Desi Sr. getting his due regarding Lucy, but where is sibling Desi, Jr.?
