    I know you're more of a spinning guy, and everyone has their own preference, but you should try palming the reel in your hand. That's why you'll hear people talking about how nicely a reel will palm. You'll get a bit better overall control. Also when you're casting it's better to keep the reel facing sideways if that makes sense. Casting overhead or axe chopping can cause a backlash a lot easier. You can cast overhead, just keep the reel facing sideways. Of course everyone has their own way. I'm not trying to tell you how to fish. Just thought I'd mention what works for me

    I grew up a spinning fisherman who got into baitcasters later. I promise you, it's a deep rabbit hole! 😂 Best advice I received was start throwing lures on the heavier side to begin with. It will cut down on backlashes to a good degree!

    • @familybudgetfisherman
      @familybudgetfisherman  ปีที่แล้ว

      I plan to stay out of the rabbit hole. Sounds like great advice, I will tak it.

    One of the best way in working a baitcaster is to cast it confidently each time after you have adjusted your setting. even if you bird’s nest you will start seeing the reel at work and it’s potential. Flow is the keyword. Seeing the line leave the spool and rod freely.
    Love the videos. Keep it going. Inspiring to keep saving, looking, and buying fishing items at a discounted price.

    Nice outing, just practice and get comfortable with your grip and thumbing again. Know you’ll have fun with outfit. I have the Daiwa 150 on my frog rod and the Zillion on my river baitcasting combo and they work great. Great yard for sure to play in! Good line and good price. I like 15lb as all all around and don’t be afraid of birds nest till you practice more. Great channel!

    Good looking combo. Glad you won this and can share it with all of us through your channel. I would like to see you set up a 2-300 combo (say putting a SLX DC on your SLX rod) and compare them. Then compare them to similar spinning combos.

    • @familybudgetfisherman
      @familybudgetfisherman  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank You Very Much! I am still humbled by the win. You and another subscriber made a similar recommendation. So I definitely will be producing the first video, compare throwing the same lure on a baitcast combo and a spinning combo. 👏🏿👏🏿🎣

  • @19DESERTFOX91
    @19DESERTFOX91 ปีที่แล้ว

    for someone who uses mainly spinning I think you did amazingly well. obviously bit rusty but nothing time on water wont fix. 10lb line for that combo is way to light for that combo in my opinion but that's just me. I just feel more comfortable on the heavier side for line. plus I got two 660yds maxima mono for $20 years ago... still on first roll lol. so if rod or lure is over 1oz it gets 20lb leader or mainline for my setups.
    That said think its an awesome looking combo that should be able to throw almost anything up to big swimbaits. I found your channel because of this rod and although i don't use spinning anymore I've enjoyed a lot your videos. I look forward to see what deals and combos you setup in the future.

    • @familybudgetfisherman
      @familybudgetfisherman  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank You for your compliment of my performance with the baitcast combo. I was as rusty as the Tin Man, but I have improved since that day. LOL! I do plan to increase the line to my fins 6/45 braid (although it still has the same fluorocarbon lines as of today). So great recommendation; thanks.
      660 yards, of maxima seems like a lifetime of fishing Line, LOL. Thank You very much for finding and checking out the channel. My hope is that you will find the info on this channel compatible with your fishing prowess notwithstanding presentations with a baitcast or spinning combo. I appreciate you being a part of this effort. 👏🏿👏🏿🎣

    I love LH reels. I started with RH reels on baitcasters, but felt better using my dominant hand to hold the rod and reeling with my LH. Enjoy the combo.

    • @familybudgetfisherman
      @familybudgetfisherman  ปีที่แล้ว

      My dominant hand is my LH but I always held my rod as a RH. So for fishing purposes I am feeling more comfortable that my LH is reeling and my RH is holding the rod. I am getting the rust out, LOL. I will post a subsequent video of my progress. I appreciate your comments. Thank You very Much! 👏🏿👏🏿🎣

    As you cast rotate so the handles are upright... Palm the reel as well as many have said..

  • @whitebass16
    @whitebass16 ปีที่แล้ว

    Woooo weee.. lookin clean fam.. palm the reel in your hands and that should help it cast further and better overall handling

  • @ericgeesaman270
    @ericgeesaman270 ปีที่แล้ว

    Try “palming” the reel during the retrieve. I find it to be much more comfortable and easy to manipulate vice holding behind the reel. Also, I would caution against having a less expensive practice setup. In the spinning world, price difference doesn’t make near as much of a difference as it does in the casting world. Your zillion will perform completely differently than a $20 clearance reel at any store

  • @natesomers5387
    @natesomers5387 ปีที่แล้ว

  • @macjig5148
    @macjig5148 ปีที่แล้ว

    Also before you reel in I would have the lure up higher to the rod. It looked like the lure was hanging too far from the rod before the cast. I assume you know how to set the brakes on the reel. If not, make sure the tension knob is tightened to the point where, when the reel is engaged, the lure falls very slowly. If the lure does not fall at all, the tension knob is too tight. If it falls too fast the tension knob is too loose. A little more complicated than the spinning reel ! 🎣

    • @familybudgetfisherman
      @familybudgetfisherman  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank You Very Much! Great advice. Most definitely more complicated than the spinning reel. 👏🏿👏🏿🎣

  • @mandogfish7418
    @mandogfish7418 ปีที่แล้ว

    That's a heavy application set up. You should have minium of 50lb braid on there flipping the lilly pads or throwing swimbaits. Also try plaming the reel. Holding the rig in such a maner will free you from the torque on your wrist when reeling. Beautiful set up!

    Let me tell you Mali….you are worth watching - besides the content of course - because of your unique presentation style. I still enjoy your natural, grounded and humble style. By the way….the world is full of idiots, you shouldn’t give them too much attention. I enjoyed watching you casting your combo. If I may state some points….you started with the most difficult line to throw. Fluoro could be a pain in the ass and needs either a very trained thumb or a significantly stronger brake setting. The only rods where I use Fluoro are my dedicated jerkbait and crankbait rods. Any other combo I use is fitted with braid as mainline with a Fluoro leader. This is so much easier to cast! Your casting distance will get better over time. All you need is a bit of practice like everyone of us needed. In addition try to start with a side cast. Casting overhead style is more likely to end in a birds nest. Once you know the „personality“ of your combo you will gain confidence and open up your settings. And finally…this was a nice outfit you have worn. Obviously, you had something important in your schedule.

    • @familybudgetfisherman
      @familybudgetfisherman  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank You So Very Much! Your comments have, and continue to be, very uplifting! I wish I had your perspective on Flouro BEFORE I threw it. LOL! Thanks for your compliment on my outfit. It was a busy day that day with meetings from discussion on solar power for the church to talks on getting a new boat. So I only had 45 minutes to record that video. My children happened to be behind the camera playing as well, which was the reason for the music overlay. As you recommended, I will be practicing my casts with your recommended modifications. 👏🏿👏🏿🎣

    That's a serious rod, that's their first rod with carbon fiber and titanium infused. If im not mistaken it also has titanium guides with sic guide rings.
    Is that the F7 power?

    • @familybudgetfisherman
      @familybudgetfisherman  ปีที่แล้ว

      You are correct on all points of your observation. This is the F7 power. This rod actually has Torzite guide rings. Thanks for checking out the channel. I look forward to more exchanges with you as videos get posted. 👏🏿👏🏿🎣

    I have to say I’m pretty particular about how I hold my Baitcast combos and the way you were holding your combo looked very uncomfortable to me. When I cast I have two fingers above and two below the divider so my thumb can sit on the spool. Then when I go to reel I actually switch to three fingers above and 1 below and I find it gives me the most control. These grips are so important to me and I find them so helpful that I’d rather not use the rod otherwise so I’d say maybe give it a try.

    Good work.
    In the long run, your arsenal won't be complete without both spinning and baitcasting combos...and modern BC reels are easier to use than every although not always built as tough and robust as they used to be overall.
