We Build a Larch Cladded House

- Welcome to the first video of the year! This was a project we actually did over the course of the last year, we started with the construction at the beginning of 2024 and did the final cladding a few months back. I also did the interior staircase but unfortunately had very little time to film it.. Over the course of the year, other subcontractors did the standing seam roof, installed the glass panels etc.. It's a simple house but quite beautiful. The designer behind this project is architect Ivan Čerkez.
Don't forget to turn on the CC for subtitles for more comments and explanations during the video.

I have never ever watched a single video of yours and thought - "I'd do that differently" or "I'd do that better", or anything like that. Your work (and video work) is always very very good..
The only thing I think - please do more videos 😊😊
Such a joy to watch your videos. A treat for a 75 year old retired carpenter contractor builder. Sometimes I feel like I'm watching wood pornography. For us to get the quality timber posts and beams that you build with, we would have had to mortgage the kids AND the grandkids. What gorgeous wood! Can it really be so much cheaper on your side of the Atlantic?
Classic Lignum. Efficient , Robust and Beautiful
Wow amazing work 🎉
Greetings from Oregon in the USA. I love how you guys build things to LAST! I wonder how much more expensive a home would be here if we built the same way.
Greetings from Croatia Mark!:) I'm glad you like it! I'm not sure how much more expensive it would be but I'm sure in a generation or two, it would pay off..
Oregon also here, so much about this style of process makes sense for our NW climate. We allready employ a similar rain screen for the walls but nothing like what they are doing here for the roof. I think we will start to see more and more of it though in the near future.
You think we’ll see it just on the fancy stuff you do or also on the D.R. Horton-type subdivisions units. Always seemed to me like spec developers want what they know will sell-sq ft, schools, etc. Supply and demand. Though I also wonder if people having to stay in their homes because of higher rates will mean buyers want better but smaller. Time will tell I guess.
@@avalanchecarter Yeah the only way we will see it from the mass bulders is if say for instance that insurance companies start demanding a non combustable ground floor type construction and they find that using a Porotherm type block qualifies and that demand is enough to influence the supply pathways to make it economical to bring in We mostly build the way we do because we are locked into the pathway we have and it's hard to get out of it because it's set the pricepoint for 'a house' Most of the contractors know they are assembling an inferior product but that's the job that's been offered and on we go.
Besides the top quality woodworking and team effort, the sheer contrast of classical music to these videos is genius! Not the usual cliché techno, heavy metal or whatever, like so many other channels.
Glad you enjoyed it! If you scroll back far enough through my videos, I bet you would reach a techno phase 😅
Always the best videos…. So excited when I see a new one…
Thank you very much David!😁
Larch is good stuff
klasse Job. Mir gefällt die Präzision mit der vorgearbeitet wurde. Da fällt dann der Zusammenbau auch leichter und geht schneller. Klass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Beau !! Comme toujours.
All looks so easy and simple. When all the hard work and preparation is done offsite.
Beautiful as always. Somehow it looks like a church
It does a bit!:) I'm glad you like it!
Great work! 👍🏾😎Like the style. 🙂
a thing of beauty
Well, my day is complete with a Lignum video!
Thank you so much!😁
Dancing robots are back. Oh happy days. And, as always, another great Lignum video -- love your work. Thanks.
More to come for sure! Thank you😄
Wow. Absolutely beautiful inside & out. I just love how you are so uncompromising in your craftsmanship. Well done!
Lignum, i send you love from Thailand.
I always look forward to your videos, such great engineering, construction methods, and energy efficiency.
Super ekipa, lijepo vas je vidjeti. 🔨🔧🪚
Hvala Željko! :)
Great build; gorgeous cladding. BTW, I would like to know the goal of the soundproofing tape: Is it to avoid transmission of external noise to the interior or to keep the joint between the OSB and the beams from creaking? Never seen that before.
Love that sober architectural style.
Made me tired just watching all that work! Beautiful building.
Not sure how nine hours passed before I noticed that you uploaded. Stopped everything when I saw that you did. Great Video, Happy New Years!
Great work, as always! Thanks for sharing this with us.
Stunning as expected!
Крутой дом. Классная работа
Wow, just wow! As always!
Thanks again!🙂
Beautiful house, thinking the inside would be amazing
Beautiful job!
another beautiful project! happy 2025!
Thank you! You too Ellie! :D
yay yet another Thomas&Jeremiah episode!
Lovely house
I'm glad you like it!:)
I love watching quality…
If we had that concrete slab in Canada, we'd flood it and play hockey on it.
:D It came across our mind!
Beautiful house once again! Who does the designs of your houses? Do you work for a specific architect(s), or are these random jobs that you bid on?
We would never see houses like this (suburb of Montréal)… if it’s not stick built generic cow dung houses, its not being built. Masterpieces of visual pollution!
Круто 👍
The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten
Как всегда 👍😎
Прекрасный 🏠
Отличный всё
Is there a reason why there is no roof overhang? Or is it purely for asthetics? I fear the cladding will have heavy watermarks from the rain in no time.
Purely aesthetics. Cladding is painted first with penetrating primer, then with two coats quality Caparol classic lasure paint. I painted my house facade in exactly the same product almost two years ago and looks the same as the first day. I will paint it again this summer and then every 5 years or so..
Hi G, awesome work man, you guys make it look so easy... Let me ask you, that nailer you use, it is like the child of a palm nailer and a nail gun???? hahahaha. Cheers from Buenos Aires, George. like #500 Ja!
Thank you very much! Yes, it's a sweet little pulsating nailer! Good thing the nail sticks out so it can be precisely positioned in each hole when nailing brackets. Cheers from Croatia!
👍
I wish I could hire you and your company to build my next home. Unfortunately, I don't think that's feasible for you to do that kind of work in the US.
How to recognise different types of trees from a long way away:
No. 1: The Larch
The. Larch.
What's the white cable on the perimeter of the roof?
lightning protection
Lightning rod. It is an uninsulated 8mm aluminium rod. Depending on the position of the house, sometimes it's mandatory. This house is on the top of the hill so the electrical engineer decided it needs one. I also have it on my house because there is a lot of distance to the nearest neighbor with lightning rod on the house..
👍🏻👍🏻
The facade will probably become an insect hotel...🤔🤔🤔
I'm not clear. It looks like there's a significant gap between each of the vertical larch strips/boards. Doesn't that mean rain, leaves and insects can get behind them?
Yes but this membrane is made for this kind of facade with gaps. Insects wont go behind seeking shelter because they are too exposed to the elements. Occasional leaf or two may get stuck though..
@@lignumchannel Still seems sketchy, but I know in places in Europe they don't even bother with screened windows. Looks great, though!
No type of bug screen is needed?
Lignum? Barely know 'um.
Needs solar panels on the roof :)
The shims to level the beam on top of the foundation wall has me befuddled. All the outer vertical walls are load bearing. Shouldnt that bottom plate be solid against the top of the foundation wall. All the verticl studs are load bearing pressing on the shimed bottom plate. Wont work for me. Love the engineering though.
