Budget Friendly 100% Cotton Watercolor Paper Paul Rubens, Arteza, Baohong Academy, Legion

- Take a closer look at the five budget-friendly 100% cotton watercolor papers that I own and see how they compare to each other. All of these papers are a little more affordable per sheet than the coveted Arches $$$$ (unless you can find it on sale!) so they might be a good choice for watercolor beginners to try without having to break the bank.
We looked at the watercolor paper texture, and how each paper reacted to different watercolor techniques, like paint flow and lifting. I was impressed by them all and how differently they act to cellulose papers.

I use Baohong and I love it, and Paul Rubens give me a good result too.
That was very interesting, thanks Jannah! I would probably try baohong paper, I heard that it performed very well. And as I see, Paul Rubens paper works nice with neocolor!
As for me, I like Fabriano artistico and just the usual Fabriano cellulose paper, probably because this paper is more affordable in my region :) I tried Sanders Waterford a few times and really like it too.
Yeah, i am loving the Paul Rubens, I really like the fine texture, I am going to grab some of their medium texture to see if it performs well too. I like Fabriano too, is the texture really obvious in the Artistico? I have heard the Saunders Waterford is lovely, so pricey though, I would be so anxious to start a painting 😂
I have been using Baohong for months. It is a great paper. Do try it.
I will have to try the Paul Rueben paper. I tried less expensive papers and was disappointed by the performance. I went to Arches and have had absolutely no complaints except for the price. So any relief in that would be most welcome!

Oh Arches is lovely, although it really does depend on your technique and requirements. I find the Paul Reuben 100% Cotton Hot Press really nice to work with the way that I paint, but I am not coming at it from highly technical requirements (like complex botanical subtle layering etc.). I do think it is worth a try as it wont break the bank, and I do think holds water well and gives you more time to work than cellulose paper if that is something you like 💕
Thanks for ur comparison 🤩 I used to wonder how good the Paul Rubens is months ago but still not buy it yet. I also really enjoy painting in Baohong papers (both academy and artist grade). But unluckily it’s easily damaged by mold here because of the high humidity 😭 So I guess I will try the Paul Rubens one
I am really enjoying the Paul Rubens paper, it is such a nice texture. That is really interesting about the mold - is it just the Baohong that reacts like that, or all your watercolor papers? I am guessing it has something to do with the sizing they use?
@@jannahlyon where I live isn’t the ideal place for watercolor painting so the mold problem also happen to other watercolor supplies. I use Leyton papers, one of them’s attacked by mold, same as Baohong but the others r still fine although I put them all in the zip bag. Sooo weird 😱
Oh, that is hard! We also have a humidity problem during winter in some places in our house so I have put all my finished works inside scrapbooking 12x12 plastic containers that close, along with some of those moisture absorber packets. It seems to be working great, no deterioration over that last couple of years.

I was regretting not having watched reviews before i checked out $$ but turns out i made a decent decision. id used baohong “rough” so far but wanted to branch out or get a sketchbook to keep everything in one place. I went for baohong again but in “fine” and what do u know? They’ve got sketchbooks, that luckily arent preforated (unlike paul rubens). You reviewed the cold press medium.i expect the hotpress fine to have quite some difference to the “rough” but i hear it still has some subtle texture which im actually looking forward to, since i dont know how id fair with a super smooth paper. I think the texture of the paper helps with unintentional flaire. Paul Rubens was another i was interested in. I may actually just buy entire sheets and make my own sketchbook for times i just want to practice without being too worried or intimidated by what i put into my sketchbook.
I brought full sheets (22 x 30) of the Baohong Academy wc paper and made little sketchbooks by folding the whole sheet. They are crazy affordable in Asia! It’s the best performing paper I have brought, and I don’t need anything more expensive.
Hmm that’s odd, I saw other channels saying that Baohong does not lift at all, like SO many of them have said that, I guess I’ll never truly know until I try it for myself. Thanks for the through comparison though! I also noticed you put a lot of effort into editing your videos.
It may come down to technique and paint brand also, it is pretty reasonably priced so it might be worth giving a try :)
@@jannahlyon Oh yeah I never thought of that! I'm planning on buying it anyway, because it's half the price of other "budget" 100% cotton papers. Plus, I don't really lift colors anyway, so it's not a big problem to me

I love the Jackson’s Quill 💕 I also really like the Baohong, it was the second 100% cotton paper that I bought when starting out, and it was the first block that I have ever used, I love working on blocks so easy to just get started working if you can’t be bothered taping 😊

Agreed, Baohong is wonderful! I do like the 100% cotton Bee paper, but I don't like their cellulose paper. I think it all depends on how you like your paint to work for you; it really is a personal preference, and I find myself switching between brands depending on the work I am doing.
