  • If you have wool carpets, we recommend that you “Go on a Moth Hunt” Specifically looking for Carpet Moths and Case Moths. Carpets that are made from pure wool or wool mixed with a synthetic fibre are prone to moth damage. 2020 has been year of high incidents of moth damage. These pests can do significant damage to your carpets, soft furnishing and clothing.
In this video we show you what to look for. It is not easy; it is a process that requires detailed and methodical auditing of the carpets in your home. But a little knowledge, of what to look out for, may save your carpets.
Let’s start at the beginning - If you leave a light on and a window open in the summer, moths will fly into your home. The males and females will congregate around the light and “get busy”. The female will then fly to the darkest part of the room, that has a carpet containing protein (wool). She will lay a few hundred eggs before she dies. The Eggs (very difficult to spot) will hatch and the Larvae (difficult to spot) will pop out and start to eat the protein in the wool. The Larvae will spin a little silk Cocoons from which it will metamorphosize into the adult Moth. Here are Weaving Magics Top Tips: -
Tip 1. Avoid leaving windows open and lights on.
Tip 2. Look for moths flying around the room or clinging to the walls or ceilings (@ 7mm long).
Tip 3. Move furniture (wardrobes, chest of drawers, book cases, beds) look behind in the dark area for moth damage, holes and missing fibres. (move the furniture that has not been moved for a long time).
Tip 4. Look for silk Cocoons, either at the top of the wall near the ceiling or Dado rail @4mm long (they look like pieces of white rice). With a Larvae inside or moth emerging.
Tip 5. Look for newly hatched Larvae (white with black head) 2mm long and wriggly little suckers
Tip 6. Look for tiny clusters of tan coloured eggs @0.25mm and down inside the fibres.
If you see any of the above extend your search to the other rooms and clothing areas. Especially if you have fine fabrics, Pure wool, Cashmere, Alpaca, Angora. Even your UGG Boots. If you need help call Weaver UK Ltd, we cover the whole of Rutland and a few Stately homes and Museums in Lincolnshire & Cambridgeshire and Leicestershire.

For people from the future, it's hard to vacuum 100% of the eggs, so you can use iron and steam to cook those little bugger's egg, works really well for me lol.👌😂

The only problem with steam, is that the temperature is 100deg C. When washing wool clothing you would never expose your best wool jumpers to 100deg C - you would probably wash, at about 20deg C or max 30deg C. Moths love wool. Wool hates steam! Your carpets are highly likely to be permanently damaged by steam.

See the eggs, but yet to find any Larvae or Moths. Carpet destroyed. Could it be a past problem? are the eggs dead?

Hi that would be a Rentokil Moth bomb in a silver foil container on top of a ceramic tile. We do this to prevent heat from damaging the sub surface.

Do they make some people itch? I swear I have these in my house. However, I feel them more than my husband does.

I have not heard of this before. It is more likely that lice, dust mite, beg bugs and fleas will make you itch and scratch. When discussing the subject, some clients automatically start itching - but I think this is an impulse reaction.
