I gotta be honest, I came across this video by chance (searched 'Danganronpa' by recently uploaded) and clicked on it thinking it was going to be a meme at first, haha. But as I was watching it, I realized that holy shit you have actually put a ton of effort into this! I actually assumed at first that this was one of those 'stolen videos' that someone else uploaded to their own channel, thinking that a video of this quality would've been originally uploaded by a more well-known content creator. But nope, you just must be really underrated! I really hope you get more attention soon! Yeah, it's crazy how much side-media there is of this in Japan - they even had themed cafés at some point! I don't know too much about stuff that isn't the main series games tbh, but I've heard good things about Danganronpa Kirigiri (and likewise not-so-great things about Danganronpa Byakuya). There had been rumours that the authors of each of those might end up writing spin-offs based off Himiko and Rantaro respectively, but who knows if that will actually go anywhere? Those are some fighting words on Ultra Despair Girls! That said, I'm not a huge fan of the game itself either, though I do respect the fact that the series did try to do something different. Gameplay-wise it's not my cup of tea, and the story is pretty edgy, but there are definitely some things I think it does well. I'm just glad we got something that actually showed us what this whole Tragedy event malarkey was, rather than have it explained to us by a third party in the main series. That, and the fact that Nagito just walks around with a dumb oven mitt on his gross-girl arm is pretty amusing to me for some reason!
I liked the video but i do have some criticisms: Kirigiri Sou's main character is named Kohei Matsudaira and is mentioned a plethora of times actually. UDH is canon, just straight up no questions asked. yeah he stayed in towa city but was in dr3 because the survivors were all asked to come to the trial of makoto after he was arrested. Like if your boss tells you to show up soemwhere you arent just gonna not do it. In fact that very scene you showed in DR3 with hagakure he even brings up kanon as a rich girl (as her family is rich so not a name drop but a reference) Dont want to be that person but you are completely wrong about danganronpa togami (as are most westerners who never finished the novels and have only their opinions off TV tropes which has mostly INCORRECT INFORMATION). Its set sometime around DR0 before the first game and before the deaths of the parade in DR3, NOT between 1 and 2. also calling something "trash fanfiction" before you completely finished something is harsh considering that at least in the japanese community, DRT3 is the most highly praised book out of all the spinoffs. Everything is completely explained (unlike killer killer where stuff like giant parasites and cutting off and reaatching someones head just kinda happen) and was actually overseen the writing of by kodaka himself. basically there is V3 levels of weirdness going on. I get that its not for everyone, because the books rely on the term "unreality" the deceiving of the reader and by extension the main character, shinobu, who is in fact not a rip off of toko at all especially within the second and third volumes. We are actually turning it into an audio-book series (including translating parts of volume 2 and 3) and alongside that at the end discussing and analyzing it so i would say please give it another try and listen to our analysis (still on going as of this comment) Also you say that DR2.5 is you favorite type of spinoff because its complete nonsense yet you diminish the others spinoffs calling them nonsense as well so yeah. Anyway feel free to argue with me about DR:T because i'm sure i will be able to change your mind on it.
Ultra despair Hagakure is really questionable for the canon because in ultra despair girls in the beginning of chapter 2, monaka has a crisis moment where she said " when the old man will die?" That the name of Hiro by the warriors of hope. Also with the fact we can found some journal of kanon in towa city...
Very true, you could argue that Hiro stayed and then eventually left and ended up back with Future Foundation, but it's questionable at best, so it's in a weird middle ground
+Cicada Wave It literally doesn’t hurt the series or contradict anything at all in UDG if UDH were to be canon. Plus, it gives Yasuhiro something more to do, and makes him stand out for once, because he’s just a useless gag character in DR1 and does basically nothing in DR3. Having him have his own side-story to shine that gives more depth to what the other Captives during the Demon Hunt killing game. Plus, UDH is written in a way that ties in surprisingly *very* smoothly with UDG’s actual main story, because it explains where Kanon’s “big brother Leon” note comes from. That’s why I feel it would be odd that the creators would make it non-canon. It’s a weird decision because they have nothing to lose by making it canon; it only slightly improves Yasuhiro. Sorry for the sudden long-winded rant! I got sorta introspective there. I also personally like UDG a lot, but I definitely understand why many don’t enjoy it. The Warriors of Hope’s backstories and Komaru and Toko’s development and banter together were what made the game fun, entertaining, and compelling for me, and made a lot of its flaws worth it. The Warriors of Hope never get punished like you said, but it’s treated as an extreme afterthought. I don’t see why this is a complaint because the game never addresses it. You just see the Warriors alive in a quick CG in the credits that you can easily miss. I do agree the four of them should’ve died, but I feel there had to have been something holding Spike Chunsoft back from properly killing them off. Maybe child murder is something that can’t be shown in certain rated video games? Because UDG did everything it could to make us think they died the entire way through until that quick credits CG going, “Hey real quick the kids are alive don’t sue us okay bye game’s over now” As for Kotoko’s “motivation,” that scene is definitely...divisive. I feel the whole point was to make the player uncomfortable, because Kotoko does it to project her jealousy over other more fortunate girls by trying to force them to experience the trauma she had gone through. Sexual assault is all she knows and she takes it out on other girls because she feels it’s every “adorbs” girl’s “duty” to suffer like she did; she can’t handle that other older girls got to live happy lives while she hadn’t. Of course, the execution of this is awkward. The narrator makes perverted jokes and the entire sequence is full of witty quips and banter from Kotoko and Genocide Jack, and they make light of it. Komaru bounces back from it relatively quickly as well.
@@komarunaegi7460 you say everything. That scene with kotoko mini game is... pointless and very weird (i hate kotoko ) plus with the fact that yoichiro koizumi can maybe make that for a future ultra despair girls 2 but with kanon and hagakure. ( with the poster than we can find in drv3 for a udg2)
Regarding whether or not UDH is canon not really mattering, I totally get that, which is why I actually enjoyed it a good bit, unlike the main story of UDG where I felt they tried really hard to make it important to the canon of the series (That after credit scene in particular) Honestly, if not for Toko and Komaru, I never would have finished UDG, because as a game itself it's not particularly fun to play, and I think it's got some serious wasted potential. The Warriors of Hope were just really poorly executed (pun intended), because the game handwaves away the presumably THOUSANDS of people they murdered because they're just kids. Masaru has a LITERAL PILE OF CORPSES in his boss arena, so it felt weird for the game to suddenly turn around on their punishments. And yeah, I kind of understand the motivation scene, but there are so many more ways you can do a scene like that without being as obviously fan service and creepy, like the fail state where Komaru "enjoys it." When you've got shows like Kara No Kyoukai that handle the topic of sexual abuse in the most upsettingly realistic and unglamourised way where I could barely watch the opening of the third movie, UDG just looks like it's throwing fan service into a story with themes of sexual abuse, and that's super gross. You have some great info about the series of Danganronpa but I really disagree with your opinion on Ultra despair girls completely. You claim that the game is bad cause it creeped you out with the dark themes and sexual things with the kids but that was the point of the game. The story is meant to creep you out. You can’t call a story bad just cause it disturbs you, especially when that was he point. And all of those disturbing things happened for a good story reason or to advanced the plot or its characters. Furthermore not every story needs characters to die for real to be good. Just cause the kids don’t die doesn’t make it bad. The only point I can somewhat I agree with you is that the 3D models are not that great.
I would love to do a full deep dive on UDG some day, and I tried not to get into it too much in this video, but my main problems with UDG honestly come down to the gameplay not being particularly good or interesting, so when you combine that with a story that I didn't really connect with nearly as much as the mainline games, I end up feeling kind of bitter on the game. This is coming from someone who was very excited for the game since it starred Toko, maybe some day I'll properly explain what I think was wrong about the game. Also, I would argue that the other DR games managed to have those sorts of themes without having the weird tickling mini-game, but that would involve properly getting into it I didn't mean to pin it all on me being uncomfortable, that's just a small part of it, I get your point though Thanks for commenting

@@CicadaWave I know this is a year late but can I explain the models all of the members of the dr team worked on this game so this was a new experience for them making 3D models that’s why the game looks the way it does they aren’t that experienced with it and had a hard time because of it
