Re-stringing a Les Paul (top wrap method with Rotosound R10)

  • Here's a little guide on how to re-string a Les Paul type guitar using the top wrap method as favoured by guys like Billy Gibbons and Joe Bonamassa. This method supposedly gives you a slightly slinkier feel to the strings which makes it easier for bending. Also, with the stop bar tail piece posts screwed all the way down, supposedly gives you more sustain as well. How true is this? Give it a try and find out yourself :)
*word if pre-caution is that this method may cause some scratches to your stop bar tail piece as the strings have to wrap over them. So, you could opt to get a spare stop bar to do it or if you like your guitar looking worn, you can do it without any hesitations :)

Thank you for this demo Mr Wong----I never realized until very recently when a luthier friend of mine explained it to me, that this top wrap method was the original idea used on very early Les Pauls (i.e the ones before the Tune O Matic bridge design was used). Back then, only the tailpiece was used for stringing. These days Bonamassa and Gibbons etc herald this as a somewhat ''new idea'' and have much success with it. I find. personally, the softer break angle is a huge advantage(less string breakage) ...the very sharp angle that the Les Paul is set up with from the factory looks quite unnerving. LOL Also, because of the softer angle, there's far less wear & tear on the bridge(they can be expensive to replace). The strings also sit better and one can obtain a lower ,slinkier, action. Many don't like the idea because they say the strings pop out from the slots at the bridge but if you are gentler, like myself, when playing this doesn't occur. Thank you again!

I used to use Rotosound for their brightness. Guess I'll try them again 😃

They’re nice, mate! Love the fact they give you an extra high E string in case you break a string!

Hi! Thanks… it’s from 1996 I believe. Got its dings and lacquer checking. Don’t need no Custom shop relic models haha… I’ve always wanted a standard and chanced upon this through a friend :)
