Cycling In Hurricane Force Winds…What Could Go Wrong?

- Cycling with a headwind is tough. Upwards of 16kmph, you’ll have to start pumping out those extra watts to keep up your speed. But what if you tried cycling against a 140kmph headwind? Conor and Hank did just that, travelling to the Dutch Headwind Cycling Championships to experience the brutal winds.

Would you ever try the headwind challenge? 💨
no 😁 I have another challenge/race for you guys! The 24h race on the Nürburgring for cyclist in July!
@@dukeofspeed2072 That sounds fun! Who would we send as our team?🤔
Nope
@@gcn Obviously Hank needs to go and Ollie.
Yeah, it would be a mad laugh :)
As a Dutch cyclist I can confirm you reencated my daily commute acurately
Oh yes i live in Germany near the Dutch Boarder. We dont have Mountains but a lot Of Wind😂😂
Hahahaha that sounds like a tough daily commute! 👀
World famous horizontal mountains that are only found in the lowlands.
Dit is oprecht gewoon wat je elke dag naar school moest fietsen. Heerlijk om te zien
And surprisingly the return has the same headwind
GCN missed an opportunity to partner with whomever their microphone wind muff supplier is to promote an obviously effective product.😮
Only the best kit here at GCN 🙌
I love Hank stands on a rock and is still not as tall as Connor 😂😂. Brilliant vid as always!
You gotta give the dutch credit for their sense of humor I guess. I just wonder how they managed to kept the start and finish constructions in place. Also, good sense of humor from GCN, sending the tallest person you can possibly find to such a race
They love a fun race in the Netherlands! 🇳🇱 It was all Conor's idea!
He did great but he almost needed El Alto to really do the race properly - but it might be dangerous to expensive equipment hence the borrowed bikes - what bike could Conor ride that would work for this race? I think there needs to be a re-do sometime with him! @@gcn
Yeah if they got Lurch (Ted Cassidy) from the 1960's "Addams Family' on a bike, it would of only been slightly more absurd!
For that matter, these two make you think of Stan and Ollie for the contrast in heights. Except for the real Ollie being a fatso.
@@aliensporebombhe should definetly ride a steel track bike. Sturdy and fast!
As a dutchy, I was so sad I heared the race was already cancelled before I knew you guys made a video about it. But I'm super happy you got to make an awesome video regardless! I hope you guys will get to participate in the actual race another time!
We'll be back for sure! Was such a fun time 🙌 Have you ever taken part in the race before?
@@gcn I haven't but it's definitely on my bucket list!
I would if you would let us know beforehand that you are coming
Racing Ten Dam on a Tandem on a Dam. Epic!
Amazing comment 😂
All that this shows us is that Hank is a bloody superhuman. Fair play Hank.
Making me feel useless for looking out the window and seeing a bit of drizzle and thinking "Not today".
But would you give the headwind championships a go?🤔
Hank is a beast! I just love the Hank/Connor collaborations - always entertaining!
Never a dull day with these two! What should their next challenge be?
Headwind race on upright bikes into a hurricane -
GCN - Send Conner, he's as aerodynamic as a bus! 🙂
Hysterical stuff guys.
By the way, this road should be on anyone's bucket list to ride. Especially when linked to the paths further north beyond hook of Holland through the dunes on to Amsterdam - just do it in the summer in the sun!
(Also disappointed you guys didn't stop for a photo opp with the cut-out podium girls left from the TDF finish line area that are still there)
We'll be back for sure! Great riding to be had around here 🙌
And I thought that the 80kph we had on Mallorca during that time were bad. 😂 This is totally bonkers.
Next time, send the management of Warner to do this. That‘s about what I wish for them.
I genuinely shed a tear when I heard the announcement.
Hank the Tank - never giving up!
It's the Netherlands guys... Holland are two of the 12 counties in the Netherlands. And to be specific , the Stormvloedskering is in the county of Zeeland, so not 'Holland'. And maybe you know, but 'Holland' was used in other times and I know normally you are pretty well thought about those things.
I was thinking the same. Also I think about 99% of Holland (the counties) are below sea level. Another little fact it’s the North Sea, not the Ocean. Not used to GCN getting things wrong.
Oh. I'm German. I only now learned that Niederlande isn't interchangeable with Holland
@@gur262 well let's be honest, today, the day after the elections. We're Holland again, so you can forget what I've said. Haha
Love these two together! Wild man Hank and sensible Conor.
Quite the difference but they make a perfect pairing!
I know right!? They would've made a grerat duo in 80s action movie/comedy for sure haha @@gcn
@@antonlasy7501 We need to make this happen 😂
@@gcnhell yes!
One of my first rides over that dam, we battled headwind/crosswinds. I was ready to quit after a few minutes. Damn-near cried.
Crackin' effort Hank!
Cheeky LifeSlowRideFast plug there. Also the way they parked the car, Stevie knew he was in the shot for sure :)
All old pro's on that tandem and Hank.😁
@@MatthijsPlenderone old pro and an amateure that was.
Gotta love the Dutch headwind championships. My parents originally are from that very region of the Netherlands, so I know Neeltje Jans pretty well from family holidays.
It's the details like the race rules and the barf zone at the finish that make this event so unique.
Sure is a unique event! Would you try the race?🤔
The what?! Barf zone!? 😵
@@lazyremnant380 Yes a Barf zone for everyone who wends to deep during the race.
Forget about all that aero lightweight stuff. THIS is where it’s at 😂😂… it brought back so many good memories of my time as a student in the Netherlands
What do we want to see from GCN? More crazy antics like this. Great video guys. Respect to Hank!
Once again Hank comes through,he just won't give up, such a tuff character Bravo ❤
Hey Hank you are a badass dude. It was awesome meeting you at TOUR DE TUCSON this weekend. I'm the guy with the CERVELO.
This is the best of GCN! i love crazy adventures for me and you! Conner was like a sail against the wind. Nice effort boys!!!
So happy to to see you guys do this race, but sad to hear that you didn’t get to do the race. Btw, my country is not called Holland, it is The Netherlands.
Wow Hank such a beast well done.
I live in Worthing and cycled to work in Brighton for about 4 years, regardless of the weather. The winter rides home were into a swirling south-westerly coastal wind and it could be unbelievably brutal quite often. I'm talking flying debris, beach pebbles being blown into the path.
What is worse though is the side winds. There are a few points on the ride where you have to brace yourself for a sudden, vicious side wind (imagine being violently pushed from the side by an invisible thug). That being said, I really enjoyed the battle against the elements (cycling isn't cycling without a sadistic edge is it?).
Sounds Brutal!😱 Would you give the headwind championships a go? You've got the experience 🤔
Sounds a little like riding around Corpus Christi Texas in the spring. Many times I have cleaned dirt from inside my ears after a ride with 40 mph crosswinds. Once with a tailwind, I was able to maintain a speed of about 20 mph for several miles without turning the cranks once.
What an experience! HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to Hank for completing the course. Conor, have seen this before. As soon. As you stopped, I said in my mind, he's done. Sad you didn't continue but go on you for making it onto the course .
This was one of the most entertaining GCN videos I have watched in a while lol hank is a monster
This was BONKERS! and STELLAR! simultaneously! Amazing content Conor, Hank and gcn! What a ridiculously inspiring super difficult challenge! I love how Hank just takes off anyway! Glad Conor was the voice of sanity! The tandem hadd an unfair advantage. I would love to try this but only if it weren't canceled. Keep this great stuff coming!
I remember that wind well!!! We were on a bike packing trip in the Netherlands and had to make it back to the ferry at the Europort. We had to cycle 25 miles from Den Haag in the height of that storm!!!!! It was crazy!!!!! Chapeau to you both.
Hank hanging with a tandem in the wind is the most impressive thing I've seen in a long time
It was incredible wasn't it!
In the Channel Islands we were getting 100mph+ winds and golfball sized hailstones during the storm along with a 30ft sea swell. It toppled over 300 trees as well. So was a bit concerned at what you'd be facing particularly with the potential debris flying around. Glad you crazy guys all made it back safely.
Eeeek! At least we know where we're sending Conor and Hank next 😂
Im blown away by yet another fantastic adventure! Thank you Hank and Connor for making my day !! 🚴♂️💨
Blown away?
my fastest ever cycle was from barra to the top of uist with a howling tailwind. it was fabulous and made up (just) for the years of it not being so. but i was young then. today it was a bit breezy and mildly damp so i watched this, stayed on the couch and had a nap. good effort lads!
At 16:02, the look on Hank's face with the sad umbrella is priceless!
Absolute insanity! Thanks so much for this - glad to see that the race being canceled did not stop some determined participants!
As a stormchaser...I am proud to see you guys dipping your toes in the water. I usually bring my bike on chases so I can ride earlier in the day, while the storm sets up, and decides what it wants to be when it grows up. That has also led to me making timing mistakes and riding my bike in a tornado warned storm, desperately trying to get back to my car...on several occasions
Love this! Please never stop with the crazy fun cycling adventure videos
Definitely the most fun video you guys have done! I couldn't stop giggling the whole video basically.
What a fantastic video. Had me chuckling all the way through.
SICK! I did a cycling trip last summer and cycled across there with wind force 6 maybe 7 which was already insane (with bagage and 100km total that day). I can't imagine wind force 9-10 with rain!
Well done lads! Brilliant effort and a very enjoyable video!
Thanks! Would you give the headwind challenge a go?💨
@@gcn ermmm.... yes. Hank is very motivational in these kind of things.
Brilliant absolutely loved this video now that's what I call FUN!!!!
God, I remember cycling to school thru these winds (around 8 km) and hating it yet loving it. Always wanted to preform at this race but sadly I live all the way up in the other side of the country, just to expensive to get there by train...
On point Hank throwing caution to the wind, the hurricane force wind, and soldier on. Loved it!
In a cycling jersey answering phonecalls in office is real dedication.
Got to be ready for anything in GCN HQ!😂
Always in uniform 🤘
Cool video. Live near the Stormvloedkering and wind definitely can be tough over there :D
Proper silliness. Right in my wheelhouse. Glad you are all safe.
You have to cycle round Limburg. Dutch cycle infrastructure combined with actually intresting scenery and hills makes for amazing riding. Could go for Amstel Gold Race as well or the gravel series
Yeah what a great Sunday night show cheers. Absolutely love it 🎉
Good effort guys, that looked mental out there!
Riotous, joyous...er, fun? Some of the best of GCN. Good luck to you!
Great fun to see Laurens ten Dam and coach Jim on the tandem. Whereever there are inhumane cycling challenges, Ten dam is there at start and finish.
It was great fun indeed, but that was not LtD on the tandem, but his podcast friend Stefan
@@user-yx9pd9bv5q Are you sure?
Amazing that the sound recording is so good.
Only the best equipment at GCN🫡
Big fun. GCN at its best!
Lol! Bonkers but it looks like a whole heap of fun! The Dutch Rad Race!
It sure was fun! 😂Would you give it a go?💨
Cool, the Oosterscheldekering used to be on my standard cycling route when i lived there nearby (Colijnsplaat) some years ago. I never took part in this race but it looks like fun.
Here I thought the flat prairie head winds in Canada were horrible. The Dutch have that beat. Great video. Hank is a rock star.
Awesome effort guys👍
What a wonderful race. Successfully riding in and negotiating nasty headwinds is a badge of honor equivalent to climbing hills in my opinion.
“It’s hard to illustrate just how windy it is on camera.”
Idk, the camera guy barely able to stand says a lot 😂
Dope song when y’all kicked off the ride 🤘and I like to imagine, when Hank got his bike, he immediately pointed the headlight down and said “I’m gonna need that aero”
💨 😳 🕶️ 🍃 🧢
that was awesome guys.....but what happened to you Conner....?,
Hank.....i take take my hat off to you sir.......no wonder they produce such great sprinters with all that flat land & extreme wind.....well done to you both
It's tough to maintain 10 miles per hour on the flat going into a strong wind coming off the sea here in the UK even if you normally cruise along at 20mph. It's not all that rare in winter on seaside roads, especially ones with a south-westerly bearing, to see winds that can slow you down to walking pace and strong gusts than can momentarily bring you to a standstill.
Hank barely made a 5km/h. 10 miles per hour and he would have flown across that dam.
As a Dutch expat overseas this was a great "homecoming video". To see that awesome roads again, the cosy township of Zierikzee (See-rick-say), and then the Oosterscheldekering (too difficult to pronounce). Also very funny that Connor says the race might be cancelled as winds are too dangerous and in the background a roadcyclist passes through:-)
i live on the northwest coast and this is most of my commutes. especially when the wind changes direction by the time im heading home 😅
Love the pairing of Hank & Conor!
Holy smokes, that shot of Connor's bike getting slapped around in the wind was effective to drive the point home. That was not the time for the deep aero wheels :D
Those two guys on the tandem, they were an awesome team, and with the backward caps too! Like Dutch tandem "Breaking Away"!
Once tried to ride the Ohakune Mountain Road when the Turoa ski field at the top was closed for... you guessed it, high winds! Didn't make it far beyond the bush line. Also, it's amazingly difficult to descend a left off camber road with an wind from the back right. Almost lost the bike a couple of times!
Welcome to the Dutch Mountains GCN. 😂 The country where you always have to make sure to have the wind in the back on the way back. 😅😂
Awesome video.
Excellent vid!!!
Very funny and exciting! Makes me think back to when my friend was blown off of his bike by a strong wind on the big island of Hawaii! We had just toured from New York to California, and had never seen wins as strong as the winds in Hawaii, my friend with his 35 pound bike and 25 pounds of camping gear and food was launched 5 feet straight out of his saddle into the deep grass on the side of the road. Uninjured but humiliated and degraded. We turned around and rode back down the hill to town to sleep it off till morning.
Should have gone the other way with the wind some of the funniest rides ever the wind at your back. Good show, happy hollidays to you all at gcn!!
Great laughs thanks
Great wind! Hank the hammer!
This looks like it'd be great to try. The nature of the event though means I'll likely never be able to give it a go, considering it'd be difficult to get off work and book a flight from Japan on such short notice, and I'd be positively crushed if I did somehow manage to spend all that and it got cancelled.
Only 6 months until typhoon season!
Total madness guys , well done😂
Loved every second of this video…..and indeed is there anything that holds Hank the Tank back…….🤙🏽👍🏽
We will have to keep trying to find something that slows Hank down! He's a beast!
Love the Netherlands, haven't been since 2016 but still looks clean and a cycling friendly nation.
This event reminds me of my collegiate days when the annual “Nude Olympics” running race would be spontaneously declared by the upperclassmen on what they thought might be the coldest, sub-zero night of the winter. The participants kit consisted of a scarf and sneakers!
Might i introduce you to another Dutch tradition, de Nieuwjaarsduik:
th-cam.com/video/2E80spDB3_c/w-d-xo.html
Crazy race indeed. Fairly sure I'd never have made any headway. I remember being blown sideways off my mtb on the trails when trying to ride in eastern WA (USA) once. Difficult to even get started.
Hank's bike is a fixie with a Sturmey Archer. 🤣 Now that was an experience of a ride boys!
Keep trying - LOVE it
btw, that region of the Netherlands is a dream for bikepacking trips of 2-4 days (although sometimes you do spend a full day with a headwind)
Think it would be around 5-7 days if all the riding was this windy!😂
rip that umbrella at the end omg shed a tear laughing so hard at it blowing sideways then inside out
Grew up in New Orleans, sat through several hurricanes. So I know all to well what those winds are like. Upto category 3 , not bad.
Love that Connor was so up or giving it a go, despite presumably knowing that he was just going to act as a huge sail!
Thank you to Conor, JLW , and battered crew ! You definitely sent the right people ...looked hilarious and a bit dodgy .
Was just a tiny bit dodgy😂Hopefully we can give it a proper go next year!
@@gcn pockets full of rocks
Fantastic video, we all knew Hank would give it a go regardless and Connor being the mother hen worrying if Hank was safe or not 🥰 such a funny video, love these type of things, shame about the brolly ☺
That’s hilarious! I would have loved turning around and coasting back, as well.
Would you not go full speed on the way back just to see how fast you could go⚡️
I live in a moderately windy city, and would love to give this race a try sometime, to see how it compares. I actually don’t mind a bit of headwind, but I’m sure this would be worse than anything I’ve ridden in.
😂I see a Hank Challenge, I click.
July 2023 in the middle of storm Poly in the Netherlands, my daughter and I cycled Bromptons in very strong winds and rain. Luckily the wind was at our backs, but it was still character-building
One ride I did I had to push 300 watts to go 13 km/h. Decided to turn around shortly after and enjoy the very brief way back with the massive tail wind.
Maniacs! I just came in from a ride, seeing a foot strong tree being felled by the wind, blocking the road. Due to recent knee problems i was out with an e-bike rental. I never knew, these hunks are meant or able to be lifted over an obstacle, by the sheer force of panic. Now i try to give my knee a rest and watch GCN for the rest of the evening. Stay safe folks!
Crazy!!!!! Too cool.
You are going to have to go back next year and do it properly
100% 💨
I would like to thank Tom Scott for introducing me to this event. And thank GCN for representing it in this iteration! Albeit without much participation! Haha
The Dutch cancelled the race when they saw who was participating.
Absolutely unbelievable guys….. 🤯🤯🤯 been wanting ye to go here with years and it’s finally come true 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻😍😍😍 ☂️ opening champs at the end was 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Thanks! Would you give the headwind championships a go?🤔
Go go team GCN F£#@ yeah! 😂😂
I love the way at the end Conner is worried about looking after Hank, like a mother and her out of control child! 😂😂😂😂
Great video
Hank you're awesome, @ 6"9" Conor has 2X times greater surface area compared to Hank, still he showed up. Awesome video guys.
