Berry was notorious for coming to a gig without having a scheduled backing band. He would then request any local band on the fly. In one instance, he got Bruce Springstgeen's early band to back him. There was no rehearsal. They asked him what songs they were going to play, and he said "Chuck Berry songs," as they launched into their first song.

@Mark Rondson His live performances were always ramshackle affairs. In the documentary with Keith Richards for his anniversary show, Richards pointed this out, and then during the actual show refused to switch keys when Berry asked him to because he knew how off the rails Berry could get while improvising. Richards was also extremely high during these interviews.

Im in New Zealand and its great to see that Chuck was doing fine at that time, a lot better than we, his fans were in Wellington New Zealand where he Take the Money and Run..we couldnt believe it when we eventually learned the real reason why we had to endure hours of standing in line waiting to get entry to the concert venue. On the night we were fed the BS line that Chucky had thrown a sickie and couldnt fire that night, the Flu was ALWAYS a good excuse that asks no more questions as weve all had the flu and know that singing, let alone a concert is a waste of effort. needless to say, we didnt get our money back, as per usual.

What a truly nice and genuinely friendly family the berries are I can't get into too much detail but I was working in a hotel installing TVs and movies and everything that makes that stuff work while we were in uniform we were not to engage with any of hotel customers all the sudden I get in the elevator at the end of the day in uniform and I start heading up the next floor elevator stops and a whole bunch of people get in as I'm doing my best to stand there with my hands behind my back in the most professional manner I could not but help noticing this very familiar face I tried not to stare at it and I looked a couple times with that somebody on the other side of the elevator says excuse me sir who are you I politely told him my name so that I was working and he says do you recognize somebody here and I said I don't think so and I politely explained that you know I am not basically to you know bother and interact with that they all said do you recognize any of us and all looked at me I looked at him and I instantly recognized Chuck although I did not say anything to that man I believe it was his aunt or cousin that I was speaking to they were very nice offered me to come back to their room if I liked once I got out of uniform and really made me feel nice not like some of the other stars and celebrities I have met like the one and only bon Jovi as when I seen him I walk up and recognize and put out my hand to shake it he didn't even want to acknowledge me so berries I wish I could have had a much more in-depth conversation with you but it was truly a pleasure to meet you thank you for that experience
