South Africa and Rhodesia were the most powerful countries in the region. However, the Portuguese colonies of Angola and Mozambique deserve to be more well known. The former had a white population of 280,000 in 1970 -a larger European population than Rhodesia-whereas Mozambique’s white population in 1970 numbered 163,000. (The figures are taken from Claudia Castelo's book, Passagens para Africa). Most Rhodesians never went to Angola but Mozambique was a popular holiday destination and the majority of Rhodesians who spent time there did so at Beira, the country’s second most important city. However, it was well worth heading down to the capital Lourenco Marques (which incidentally attracted many South African holidaymakers), and was one of the finest cities in Africa. Here’s footage of LM in 1970: th-cam.com/video/xqyWMVc9Gus/w-d-xo.html
Portugal was trying to incorporate such regions as ultramarine departments, unfortunately Salazar died shortly after the war against the guerrillas were won and the government that proceeded gave them independence
Rhodesia was already a developed country when it rebelled against Britain in 1965. For example, the following footage shows the capital city, Salisbury, in the 1950s. th-cam.com/video/NG7SWqGBkWA/w-d-xo.html

Here's the story of Rhodesia
A land both fair and great
On 11th of November
An independent state
This was much against the wishes
Of certain governments
Whose leaders tried to break us down
To make us all repent
But we're all Rhodesians
And we'll fight through thick and thin
We'll keep our land a free land
Stop the enemy coming in
We'll keep them north of the Zambezi
Till that river's running dry
This mighty land will prosper
For Rhodesians never die
They can send their men to murder
And they can shout their words of hate
But the cost of keeping this land free
Can never be too great
For our men and boys are fighting
For the things that they hold dear
That this land and all its people
Will never disappear
'Cause we're all Rhodesians
And we'll fight through thick and thin
We'll keep our land a free land
Stop the enemy coming in
We'll keep them north of the Zambezi
Till that river's running dry
This mighty land will prosper
For Rhodesians never die
We'll preserve this little nation
For our children's children too
For once you're a Rhodesian
No other land will do
We will stand tall in the sunshine
With the truth upon our side
And if we have to go alone
We'll go alone with pride
But we're all Rhodesians
And we'll fight through thick and thin
We'll keep our land a free land
Stop the enemy coming in
We'll keep them north of the Zambezi
Till that river's running dry
This mighty land will prosper
For Rhodesians never die
Yes we're all Rhodesians
And we'll fight through thick and thin
We'll keep our land a free land
Stop the enemy coming in
We'll keep them north of the Zambezi
Till that river's running dry
This mighty land will prosper
For Rhodesians never die
Because we're all Rhodesians
And we'll fight through thick and thin
We'll keep our land a free land
Stop the enemy coming in
We'll keep them north of the Zambezi
Till that river's running dry
This mighty land will prosper
