The Berlin Wall (German: Berliner Mauer), a symbol of the Cold War, was originally built on 13 August 1961 and was demolished in the weeks after 9 November 1989. Part of the Iron Curtain, the Berlin Wall was the better known part of the borders of the GDR. The wall stood until November 9, 1989.
Conceived by the administration of East German communist leader Walter Ulbricht and approved by Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev, the wall formed a separation barrier between West Berlin and the German Democratic Republic for nearly 28 years. It was built in the post-war period, (the period when Germany was divided), in an effort to stem the consequences of the labor drain and economic losses associated with the daily migration of large numbers of professionals and skilled workers between East and West. The existence of the Wall for almost three decades caused a significant decrease in emigration (escapees - "Republikflucht" in German): from 2.5 million, in the period 1949 - 1962, to only 5,000 - between 1962 and 1989.
The creation of the Berlin Wall was a propaganda disaster for East Germany and the communist bloc as a whole. The wall represented a symbol of communist tyranny, persistently displayed in the Western world, especially after the shooting, heavily publicized by the Western mass media, of several escapees. Political liberalization in the late 1990s, associated with the decline of the Soviet Union, led to the relaxation of restrictions on crossing the East German border, which eventually led to mass demonstrations and the fall of the communist government. When a decree by East German officials allowing free border crossing was announced on November 9, 1989, huge masses of East
Berliners approached the wall and eventually crossed through all crossing points, joining, in a festive atmosphere, with the West Berlin crowd. After several weeks, the Wall was finally completely destroyed, the fall of this barrier being the first step towards German reunification, which was officially completed on October 3, 1990.
After the end of World War II in Europe, Germany was divided into four occupation zones. The old German capital, Berlin, as the seat of the Allied Control Commission, was divided into four corresponding occupation zones. Although at first the intentions of the victorious powers were to rule Germany together within the borders established in 1947, the outbreak of the Cold War saw the French, British and American occupation zones united in the Federal Republic of Germany in 1949. In response, in the Soviet occupation zone of Berlin would be proclaimed, in the same year, the German Democratic Republic, with the capital in East Berlin.
Since 1948, West Germany has developed as a western capitalist country with a social market economy ("Soziale Marktwirtschaft") and a genuinely democratic - parliamentary political life. The 30-year uninterrupted economic growth that began in the sixth decade led to the "economic miracle". Within its borders, East Germany was governed by an authoritarian government, modeled after the Soviet one, which applied a centrally planned economy to the economy. As East Germany became the wealthiest and most developed country in the Eastern Bloc, many of its citizens looked to the West for economic prosperity and political freedom. The flight of numerous East German citizens to non-communist countries via West Berlin led to the construction, in 1961, of the GDR border system, of which the Wall was an integral part.
