Thirty year survivor this year. Third stage, estrogen positive. Thirty-two lymph nodes removed with 21 of them positive. Numbness as you perfectly describe until last year when I experienced some of those lightening bolts, twinges. Again as you perfectly describe. Had to smile about my dear body persisting after all these years. Big hugs. P.S. Ice packs are wonderful for pain. Never needed anything else for pain.

My breast care nurse has warned me not to use ice or heat packs, said it would be damaging. I did put a gel pack (not put in the freezer) and hated even that cool sensation.
Too bad. My doctors and nurses encouraged me to use ice packs for pain, even providing me with hospital packs to insert ice cubes in. Worked marvelously for me. Never needed any pain meds, even over the counter. I wrapped the soft material packs in a towel.
@@TheBreastCancerPhysio Hi Jen, do you have any views about the use of ice or heat packs for pain? My breast care nurse has said not to use them in the armpit area but other patients swear by them. I have a sore pain in the armit area that comes and goes.

totally my case as well! I got 6 lymph nodes removed during my bilateral mastectomy. It's Day 16 post surgery , and I started to feel uncomfortable obviously. I was even afraid to touch it, now I know I can do massage instead!!! Thank you so much, Jen!
I am not a cancer patient, but i had breast reduction and lift in December. In January I begin to feel a lot of pain in my arm pit area where he performed lipo on the sides in that area, I have been having bad arm pain as well that has now caused my pointer finger to be numb and lower arm. No medications helped. They sent me to pain management. Now I have to get an MRI and Nerve test done. Lately the only thing that is coping the pain is Nervive and excedrin ache both over the counter medicines. I am nervous and praying no permanent nerve damage. Thank you for this video.
Praise to Almighty, it's my 8th month post right breast lumpectomy, & right axillary lymph nodes(18) dissection due to right breast's Multifocal Invasive Duct Carcinoma. Post surgery, i experienced this kind of unbearable feeling of my skin being torn apart. As of this moment, there's a feeling of discomfort of numbness, and thickness @ my right armpit extending to my arm. I refused right breast's mastectomy, chemo, & radiation therapies because i believe in destiny ... and so, i lift everything unto God. Omg, thank you......i have been in so much discomfort since surgery in late February but the only response I've had is 'thats normal, dont worry' but no one has explained why i am numb and so bloody uncomfortable in my armpit. Half the time i just feel my care team are going through the motions and ticking off their To Do List for Jules!!! Your explanations have given me an overwhelming sense of relief and that i can start to look forward to going back to being normal again. The hardest part of my journey to date has been the pain and numbness in the armpit and inside my arm, as well as not being told by the surgeon these are the things to expect.......i shall be following your channel closely. Mine numbnesses lasted 4 years . I had surgery and lymph removed bc it was protocol where I did. It came out clear but I had numbness over years and pain under my arms was a constant. Recently went away . Radiations has short and long term side effects . Like chemo it is also toxic.

Your explanations are thorough and beneficial. My surgeon also didn’t explain sentinel node biopsies or the lack of significant benefit in removing nodes with low grade/stage cancers. I had DCIS.

Same here ! if it wasnt for your videos i would be in the dark ... very blindsided by post op side effects. I thought i just had to recover from biopsies and sentinal node surgeries then masectomy / reconstrution .... then after the 6 week marker passed and i thought id be back to normal one by one problems of deep stomach scarring which shocked me under arm pain and swelling stiffness and soreness. also i had problem with canulas leaking repeatedly into arm and medication alergic reactions which still pain me internally. 2 days before surgery i crushed my finger to nothing between 2 big rocks in garden ... My brain is receiving so many nerve signals its almost shut down .. i really would have appreciated a heads up from medical team as to what might happen ... and be patient with recovery its not finished at 6 weeks which is what i took from chat ... then i was discharged for 3 months and all the new stuff emerges. your videos are most appreciated and important and i thank you for you knowledge and generosity xxxx

I had a right right breast mastectomy and 4 lymphnoids taken out 7/27/2022. The pain was horrendous. I cannot explain to you enough how painful this was. I have healed but will never be the same This condition humbled me. It scared me. It made me analyze my life from the beginning of it. The aftermath pain is something that I could never describe or even compare to any other pain on this entire earth!!!!!!!

Appreciate the explanation. I am 4 weeks out from a preventative mastectomy in which some auxiliary tissue was removed from my left axilla and I have numbness in exactly the places you describe! Good to know why and like others, neither the breast surgeon nor the plastic surgeon who did my reconstruction mentioned this! Stimulating the area makes total sense to me. Thanks so much🥰
Thank you for this information! At a 12 month check up with the physician's assistant, I discussed the numbness and was sent to a lymphedema specialist. I did have physical therapy, which was very helpful. But it would have been even more beneficial to have been made aware of the possibility of numbness in the post surgery appointments with my surgeon. THANK YOU!!!

2 months since my last 2 surgery and my numbness is still very much there and annoying. I had two surgeries on the same breast and 10 nodes taken out. Sometimes my numbness feels like a big brick lodged in my arm. It’s numb and tightens up. I look forward to all this ending soon🙏🏻. Really appreciate this video. God bless you.
Exactly what I am going through now. I had a Massive modified mastectomy 6 weeks ago, drain tubes still attached. Going through this exact numbness at the exact places you described.
Thank you I was wondering what was going on. I've been massaging my arms and armpits along with purchasing a compression bra and these things have made a great deal of difference. The numbness is nearly all gone.
@@accidentsafe Not on their own unfortunately I had to begin physical therapy in June of this year, because I began reconstructive surgery after the earlier DMX. In the Fall I had a DIEP surgery, which left a great deal of trauma to my underarm, arms, and torso areas. I had a great deal breast tissue in my underarm areas and numbness from in my arms after the 11 hour surgery. Physical therapy has been tremendous in giving me back usage and fluid release. Restoring some sensation is an added bonus. You might want to discuss with your doctors on seeing a specially physical therapist who is trained as a BC PT. The best of luck to you.

Thank you thank you thank you! Finally an explanation of why I’m feeling this numbness and shooting pain/sensation under my arm. My surgeon didn’t mention any of this pre or post op and I was very frustrated with the lack of information. This is going to help so many others who were uninformed of this side effect. Is there a specific timeline after surgery when I can start massaging?

Thank you for this information. Actually, I feel a bit of sensation on where my breast used to be. Sometimes, it itches and I reached for my breast and I realized, oh it's not there anymore. I think this what they call phantom feeling. For me, this is not a negative thing. It's telling me that I still have that sensation. Again, thanks for the talk.

Hi yes very helpful I am 11 days post op for lumpectomy and lymph node surgery and yes m armpit to elbow issues numb also particularly odd my neck to ear feels odd but not exactly numb. I am hopeful that the feeling comes back eventually

I’m 15 months post BMX. I had a numb or really sensation less area for over a year in the medial upper arm area. My acupuncturist has worked on it for 3 months and my sensation is finally returning. If you are experiencing this, find a great acupuncturist.
Hi Alynda, glad to hear the sensation is returning, just be cautious with skin penetration on the same side of lymph node removal for risk of infection.

I just had my second axillary lymph node surgery and I didn’t even know axillary meant armpit . I have learned so much from this video and feeling relieved that my super sore armpit and arm is normal and will get better .

@@jamiewarkentine7108 I am 35y old, there is skin infection in underarms which has been removed. But the underarms area & little part of tricep is now numb, and my doctor said, it will come back after 1 month. Now I am scared. Will I get this in future or not ? 😐😑😶

Hi Jen really do appreciate the info shared. I had undergone bilateral mastectomy it's now 3 weeks plus. I have been experiencing numbness in the armpit and below the side walls of the breast. Fluid was aspirated n now I see a bulge again. Is this normal to still have fluid after 3 weeks. The area is numb too. Kindly advice
When and how should I start exercising ? I used 1kg dumbles before surgery.I am 72 and want to go back to my routine as soon as possible. Mastectomy in April,4 doses chemo and I'm fine.During this period I exercised my arms as my surgent adviced. But now I want to use dumbles. Thank you.
Oh wow this was sooo informative - I mentioned my arm yesterday at my assessment but they had no ideas or suggestions - so I decided to stimulate the area with a massage tool - I'm 7 days post opp, but this video has been so informative and now I know I'm at least doing the right thing X

This was very informative. Doctors don’t really talk about this kind of thing. I had a mastectomy a month ago and have been doing rehab exercises and I can use my arm almost normally now. The numbness and pain in my arm is gone but my armpit and underarm area is still numb. Thanks for your videos and I’ll watch the one you mentioned about the cording.
You're so welcome ST Channel! Yes, this is another side effect not discussed in much detail. I believe our Doctors need an up-skilled Nurse that can fill in the information gaps because a lot of Doctors don't have time for all of the other issues that can pop up. Jen x

Three weeks ago I had a single mastectomy with 1 sentinel lymph node removed and just last night I realized I’ve developed cording. 😬 I intend to watch your videos on this topic, too! Even though it’s only been 3 weeks, I have been experiencing precisely those odd, “tingley” flashes of sensation around the area where my breast was reconstructed: I actually has a procedure called a Goldilocks so I have a small mound of re-purposed tissue still remaining. I was very glad to hear you say that this is the symptoms of nerve regeneration, as I had suspected. 👍🏼👍🏼

Just about 2 months since my bilateral mastectomies with only 2 lymph nodes remove in my left side. But I have a lot of numbness feeling in my left armpit, arm, side chest area and towards almost a half of my back area. Thank you for the tips. I been exercising and doing heating pads per my plastic surgeon recommendation. I'm going to add massaging the area.

What's interesting is that, while numbness was the usual, but 17 years later I'm having shooting pains periodically from axilla to upper arm. I use capsaicin for relief.
Hi Cat Mom, again my apologies for my delayed reply. Shooting pains may also be from scar tissue, which can be settled with scar massage. If nerves were growing back it would be atypical for them to still be growing back at the 17 year post treatment mark. Jen
Just had surgery three weeks today..i was told i would never get feeling back and this is my life. Me what. I wasn't told either and i kept asking my mom and aunt whats under my arm. I thought i had been cut there to. This video helped me alot today. I was worried if i could lay on my side or massage it would it harm me.

My numbness is in my breast, and this happened slowly over the year. I had cancer 25 years ago and the fibrosis start about one year after. Now it is already under my arm and armpit, maybe in its way to my arm and shouder. I am very concerned in what will gonna happen to me. 🙄

Thank you, thank you. I sm 2 weeks pist mastectomy surgery & the armpit pain is my msin issue. But to know there might be an end to it once the peripheral nerves regenerate is brilliant (even if it takes over a year - I'll take a mm a day). And if it doesnt go, then at least im well informed as to why.

Hello dr hope i get reply from you because i have some concerns i was diagnosed with breast cancer stage one grade 2 in 2018 Invasive ductal carcinoma, moderately differentiated, SBR grade 2, i had 3 lymph nodes removed one sentinel and two non sentinels negative my therparist told me that i should be very careful because i had 4 weeks radiotherapy so may be that caused more damage to the lymph nodes my question is that in such condition for how long my this hand or arm can’t be used for bp checkup , blood collection , canola uses etc plz reply i will be grateful
Hi, once lymph nodes are removed and radiation has been performed on the chest wall / armpit region, guidelines suggest to avoid blood draws, blood pressure cuff testing, injections / infusions and so on, on the affected arm for life. It’s been five months since I had my lumpectomy and radiation on my right breast. When I look in the mirror and compare the two, my right breast is darker and my nipple is darker than my left, it’s like there’s a brown circle around it. Also, it’s not my underarm that feels nimble, it’s my breast where the radiation was targeted. Is this normal? Also, where the radiation was targeted, my skin feels so hard and rough there. Hi Suzanne, so sorry for my delayed reply. I have more videos on Radiation Fibrosis, which is what you're most likely describing in regards to the symptoms of your breast. Hi Joyce, thanks for your comment. Strong aching pains can be very normal if you haven't had Physiotherapy / Physical Therapy treatment. Have you been seeing any therapists to assist with the pains? The numbness can often take over 12 months to come back and occasionally some women will report the feeling does not return. Jen, thanks a ton. I had 42 nodes removed, it's been 2 months and I have a marginal swelling. I am doing exercises and massage regularly. I have full range of rotation in my arms. Do u think I will be able to manage my lymphedema in this way
Thanks for that info. Just wanted to ask, my lumpectomy was three and a half years ago, my arm and armpit have been numb since the surgery and both are still the same, no improvement at all over this time. I also have lymphoedema so the area does get regular massaging, I also exercise 3-4 time per week. Is it normal that there has been no improvement? The area is also quite painful 24/7 Thanks so much for your advice

Hi, as far as I am aware, yes. Peripheral nerve tissue can regenerate but in both cases (arm numbness from surgery, and hands/feet from chemo) may never resolve for some people. I had lumpectomy and removed only the first one and two nodes for sentinel lymph node biopsy,23 days ago. My underarm,and on the side of arm is swallen,I feel heavy tension when my arm is down,also I feel discomfort, numbness,tingling and everything is very tight...is it normal for armpit to be swallen after this procedure for longer period of time?

I had breast cancer operation in September 2022. I am still sore in the region where the drainage system was put in near my armpit. I also had a blocked drain from the day of the operation and I am swollen under my arm and feels like a ball is under my arm. I have Cerebral Palsy. So my mastectomy was on the left side and my water gathered in my cur. I told the doctor three times the drain didn't work. Is that why I have this swelling. Some said i have scar tissue others say fatty tissue and tell me the operation will be major and will hamper me. I am also trying to keep my home which the manager of theh retirement village wants me out. She is causing me stress. I am having to look for a new home off the property. I also have a mother of 93 wanting me to leave the retirement village. She is stuck in the home where we are struggling to pay. I want her to come with me. How can I reduce the stress so I don't reaccur.

Hi, I am one month post bilateral mastectomy. They had removed the sentinel lymph node on my left side where the cancer was found but it’s my OPPOSITE (right) armpit that is numb. I am still a little swollen on my right side so I have to look in the mirror to see if I hit the spot for my deodorant, lol. Is it normal for the opposite side to be numb? TiA Sally
Hi Sally, yes, due to the mastectomy being bilateral, it is possible nerve tissue in the Right lateral (outer) chest wall was damaged in the surgery and is causing numbness in the armpit. I would discuss it with your Medical Team so they explain it as well to clarify my thoughts. Hey Jen! Great video I’ve had Thoracic Outlet syndrome for years and was recently diagnosed with many tumors and some in my armpits. They’re most likely non cancerous however I’m wondering if these armpit tumors have been casing my numbness, pain, and tingling in my arms for years. Going to my doctor later this week she said because they’re almost all giant fibroadenomas we will remove them. Does this sounds like a possible cause for the numbness?

You may get relief in the arm symptoms once the tumors are removed and that will answer the question. Hi Lee, burning pain can also be a symptom when nerve tissue has been damaged following surgical trauma. It can improve but it sounds like you may need treatment for this symptom. Hi Sonia, thanks for your question! It is highly likely this is numbness secondary to the surgery. Breast pain is typical after lumpectomy (and radiation) because of scar tissue. If you can start treating the scar tissue at home or with a Physio that works with Breast Cancer patients I would recommend that. I have other videos on how to treat breast pain and scar tissue. Thirty year survivor this year. Third stage, estrogen positive. Thirty-two lymph nodes removed with 21 of them positive. Numbness as you perfectly describe until last year when I experienced some of those lightening bolts, twinges. Again as you perfectly describe. Had to smile about my dear body persisting after all these years. Big hugs.
P.S. Ice packs are wonderful for pain. Never needed anything else for pain.

My breast care nurse has warned me not to use ice or heat packs, said it would be damaging. I did put a gel pack (not put in the freezer) and hated even that cool sensation.
Too bad. My doctors and nurses encouraged me to use ice packs for pain, even providing me with hospital packs to insert ice cubes in. Worked marvelously for me. Never needed any pain meds, even over the counter. I wrapped the soft material packs in a towel.

totally my case as well! I got 6 lymph nodes removed during my bilateral mastectomy. It's Day 16 post surgery , and I started to feel uncomfortable obviously. I was even afraid to touch it, now I know I can do massage instead!!! Thank you so much, Jen!

I am not a cancer patient, but i had breast reduction and lift in December. In January I begin to feel a lot of pain in my arm pit area where he performed lipo on the sides in that area, I have been having bad arm pain as well that has now caused my pointer finger to be numb and lower arm. No medications helped. They sent me to pain management. Now I have to get an MRI and Nerve test done. Lately the only thing that is coping the pain is Nervive and excedrin ache both over the counter medicines. I am nervous and praying no permanent nerve damage. Thank you for this video.
Praise to Almighty, it's my 8th month post right breast lumpectomy, & right axillary lymph nodes(18) dissection due to right breast's Multifocal Invasive Duct Carcinoma.
Post surgery, i experienced this kind of unbearable feeling of my skin being torn apart.
As of this moment, there's a feeling of discomfort of numbness, and thickness @ my right armpit extending to my arm.
I refused right breast's mastectomy, chemo, & radiation therapies because i believe in destiny ... and so, i lift everything unto God.
Thank u for the information which is educational, & additional knowledge about my present health condition which provides a great relief from my anxieties.

Omg, thank you......i have been in so much discomfort since surgery in late February but the only response I've had is 'thats normal, dont worry' but no one has explained why i am numb and so bloody uncomfortable in my armpit. Half the time i just feel my care team are going through the motions and ticking off their To Do List for Jules!!! Your explanations have given me an overwhelming sense of relief and that i can start to look forward to going back to being normal again. The hardest part of my journey to date has been the pain and numbness in the armpit and inside my arm, as well as not being told by the surgeon these are the things to expect.......i shall be following your channel closely. Mine numbnesses lasted 4 years . I had surgery and lymph removed bc it was protocol where I did. It came out clear but I had numbness over years and pain under my arms was a constant. Recently went away . Radiations has short and long term side effects . Like chemo it is also toxic.

Same here ! if it wasnt for your videos i would be in the dark ... very blindsided by post op side effects.
I thought i just had to recover from biopsies and sentinal node surgeries then masectomy / reconstrution .... then after the 6 week marker passed and i thought id be back to normal one by one problems of deep stomach scarring which shocked me under arm pain and swelling stiffness and soreness. also i had problem with canulas leaking repeatedly into arm and medication alergic reactions which still pain me internally.
2 days before surgery i crushed my finger to nothing between 2 big rocks in garden ...
My brain is receiving so many nerve signals its almost shut down ..
i really would have appreciated a heads up from medical team as to what might happen ... and be patient with recovery its not finished at 6 weeks which is what i took from chat ... then i was discharged for 3 months and all the new stuff emerges.

I had a right right breast mastectomy and 4 lymphnoids taken out 7/27/2022. The pain was horrendous. I cannot explain to you enough how painful this was. I have healed but will never be the same This condition humbled me. It scared me. It made me analyze my life from the beginning of it. Appreciate the explanation. I am 4 weeks out from a preventative mastectomy in which some auxiliary tissue was removed from my left axilla and I have numbness in exactly the places you describe! Good to know why and like others, neither the breast surgeon nor the plastic surgeon who did my reconstruction mentioned this! Stimulating the area makes total sense to me. Thanks so much🥰
Thank you for this information! At a 12 month check up with the physician's assistant, I discussed the numbness and was sent to a lymphedema specialist. I did have physical therapy, which was very helpful. But it would have been even more beneficial to have been made aware of the possibility of numbness in the post surgery appointments with my surgeon. THANK YOU!!!

5 yrs on i was still suffering nerve pain and 33 yrs later still am except when im in 21 degrees heat.
2 months since my last 2 surgery and my numbness is still very much there and annoying. I had two surgeries on the same breast and 10 nodes taken out. Sometimes my numbness feels like a big brick lodged in my arm. It’s numb and tightens up. I look forward to all this ending soon🙏🏻.

Thank you I was wondering what was going on. I've been massaging my arms and armpits along with purchasing a compression bra and these things have made a great deal of difference. The numbness is nearly all gone.

@@accidentsafe Not on their own unfortunately I had to begin physical therapy in June of this year, because I began reconstructive surgery after the earlier DMX. In the Fall I had a DIEP surgery, which left a great deal of trauma to my underarm, arms, and torso areas. I had a great deal breast tissue in my underarm areas and numbness from in my arms after the 11 hour surgery. Physical therapy has been tremendous in giving me back usage and fluid release. Restoring some sensation is an added bonus. You might want to discuss with your doctors on seeing a specially physical therapist who is trained as a BC PT. The best of luck to you.

My surgeon didn’t mention any of this pre or post op and I was very frustrated with the lack of information. This is going to help so many others who were uninformed of this side effect. Thank you for this information. Actually, I feel a bit of sensation on where my breast used to be. Sometimes, it itches and I reached for my breast and I realized, oh it's not there anymore. I think this what they call phantom feeling. For me, this is not a negative thing. It's telling me that I still have that sensation. Again, thanks for the talk.

Hi yes very helpful I am 11 days post op for lumpectomy and lymph node surgery and yes m armpit to elbow issues numb also particularly odd my neck to ear feels odd but not exactly numb. I am hopeful that the feeling comes back eventually

I’m 15 months post BMX. I had a numb or really sensation less area for over a year in the medial upper arm area. My acupuncturist has worked on it for 3 months and my sensation is finally returning. If you are experiencing this, find a great acupuncturist.
Hi Alynda, glad to hear the sensation is returning, just be cautious with skin penetration on the same side of lymph node removal for risk of infection.

I just had my second axillary lymph node surgery and I didn’t even know axillary meant armpit . I have learned so much from this video and feeling relieved that my super sore armpit and arm is normal and will get better .

When and how should I start exercising ? I used 1kg dumbles before surgery.I am 72 and want to go back to my routine as soon as possible. Mastectomy in April,4 doses chemo and I'm fine.During this period I exercised my arms as my surgent adviced. But now I want to use dumbles. Thank you.

Dear Jen. 6 weeks after lumpectomy and lymph node removal and today I found thia video. Now i know why my armpit is numb. My surgeon never explained this at all and i was beginning to wonder what was wrong. This should be told to us by our doctors.

This was very informative. Doctors don’t really talk about this kind of thing. I had a mastectomy a month ago and have been doing rehab exercises and I can use my arm almost normally now. The numbness and pain in my arm is gone but my armpit and underarm area is still numb. Thanks for your videos and I’ll watch the one you mentioned about the cording.
You're so welcome ST Channel! Yes, this is another side effect not discussed in much detail. I believe our Doctors need an up-skilled Nurse that can fill in the information gaps because a lot of Doctors don't have time for all of the other issues that can pop up. Jen x

Three weeks ago I had a single mastectomy with 1 sentinel lymph node removed and just last night I realized I’ve developed cording. 😬 I intend to watch your videos on this topic, too! Even though it’s only been 3 weeks, I have been experiencing precisely those odd, “tingley” flashes of sensation around the area where my breast was reconstructed: I actually has a procedure called a Goldilocks so I have a small mound of re-purposed tissue still remaining. I was very glad to hear you say that this is the symptoms of nerve regeneration, as I had suspected. 👍🏼👍🏼

Just about 2 months since my bilateral mastectomies with only 2 lymph nodes remove in my left side. But I have a lot of numbness feeling in my left armpit, arm, side chest area and towards almost a half of my back area. Thank you for the tips. I been exercising and doing heating pads per my plastic surgeon recommendation. I'm going to add massaging the area.

What's interesting is that, while numbness was the usual, but 17 years later I'm having shooting pains periodically from axilla to upper arm. I use capsaicin for relief.
Hi Cat Mom, again my apologies for my delayed reply. Shooting pains may also be from scar tissue, which can be settled with scar massage. If nerves were growing back it would be atypical for them to still be growing back at the 17 year post treatment mark. Jen
Just had surgery three weeks today..i was told i would never get feeling back and this is my life. Me what. I wasn't told either and i kept asking my mom and aunt whats under my arm. I thought i had been cut there to. This video helped me alot today. I was worried if i could lay on my side or massage it would it harm me.

My numbness is in my breast, and this happened slowly over the year. I had cancer 25 years ago and the fibrosis start about one year after. Now it is already under my arm and armpit, maybe in its way to my arm and shouder. I am very concerned in what will gonna happen to me. 🙄

But to know there might be an end to it once the peripheral nerves regenerate is brilliant (even if it takes over a year - I'll take a mm a day). Hello dr hope i get reply from you because i have some concerns i was diagnosed with breast cancer stage one grade 2 in 2018 Invasive ductal carcinoma, moderately differentiated, SBR grade 2, i had 3 lymph nodes removed one sentinel and two non sentinels negative
my therparist told me that i should be very careful because i had 4 weeks radiotherapy so may be that caused more damage to the lymph nodes

Hi, once lymph nodes are removed and radiation has been performed on the chest wall / armpit region, guidelines suggest to avoid blood draws, blood pressure cuff testing, injections / infusions and so on, on the affected arm for life. It’s been five months since I had my lumpectomy and radiation on my right breast. When I look in the mirror and compare the two, my right breast is darker and my nipple is darker than my left, it’s like there’s a brown circle around it. Also, it’s not my underarm that feels nimble, it’s my breast where the radiation was targeted. Is this normal? Also, where the radiation was targeted, my skin feels so hard and rough there. Hi Joyce, thanks for your comment. Strong aching pains can be very normal if you haven't had Physiotherapy / Physical Therapy treatment. Have you been seeing any therapists to assist with the pains? The numbness can often take over 12 months to come back and occasionally some women will report the feeling does not return.

Just wanted to ask, my lumpectomy was three and a half years ago, my arm and armpit have been numb since the surgery and both are still the same, no improvement at all over this time. I also have lymphoedema so the area does get regular massaging, I also exercise 3-4 time per week. Is it normal that there has been no improvement? The area is also quite painful 24/7

The pain is most likely secondary to scar tissue. Have you had any treatment by a Physiotherapist who specializes in Breast Cancer for your pain?

Hi, as far as I am aware, yes. Peripheral nerve tissue can regenerate but in both cases (arm numbness from surgery, and hands/feet from chemo) may never resolve for some people. I had breast cancer operation in September 2022. I am still sore in the region where the drainage system was put in near my armpit. I also had a blocked drain from the day of the operation and I am swollen under my arm and feels like a ball is under my arm. I have Cerebral Palsy. So my mastectomy was on the left side and my water gathered in my cur. I told the doctor three times the drain didn't work. Is that why I have this swelling. Some said i have scar tissue others say fatty tissue and tell me the operation will be major and will hamper me. I am also trying to keep my home which the manager of theh retirement village wants me out. She is causing me stress. I am having to look for a new home off the property. I also have a mother of 93 wanting me to leave the retirement village. She is stuck in the home where we are struggling to pay. I want her to come with me. How can I reduce the stress so I don't reaccur.

Hi, I am one month post bilateral mastectomy. They had removed the sentinel lymph node on my left side where the cancer was found but it’s my OPPOSITE (right) armpit that is numb. I am still a little swollen on my right side so I have to look in the mirror to see if I hit the spot for my deodorant, lol. Is it normal for the opposite side to be numb? TiA Sally
Hi Sally, yes, due to the mastectomy being bilateral, it is possible nerve tissue in the Right lateral (outer) chest wall was damaged in the surgery and is causing numbness in the armpit. I would discuss it with your Medical Team so they explain it as well to clarify my thoughts.

Hey Jen! Great video I’ve had Thoracic Outlet syndrome for years and was recently diagnosed with many tumors and some in my armpits. They’re most likely non cancerous however I’m wondering if these armpit tumors have been casing my numbness, pain, and tingling in my arms for years. Going to my doctor later this week she said because they’re almost all giant fibroadenomas we will remove them. Does this sounds like a possible cause for the numbness?
Hi Madison, so sorry for my delayed reply. It is very possible that the tumors in the armpit have caused your symptoms. You may get relief in the arm symptoms once the tumors are removed and that will answer the question. Hi Lee, burning pain can also be a symptom when nerve tissue has been damaged following surgical trauma. It can improve but it sounds like you may need treatment for this symptom. Have you spoken to your Medical Team about this?

I find this happens still when I get swelling and fluid pocketed there in overnight
Thank you, this is so on point but I do want to ask about numbness on the side of the breast. My numbness goes from the armpit down to the entire side of my breast. My breast is also very sore, could it be scar tissue? Appreciate your feedback, thank you..
Hi Sonia, thanks for your question! It is highly likely this is numbness secondary to the surgery. Breast pain is typical after lumpectomy (and radiation) because of scar tissue. If you can start treating the scar tissue at home or with a Physio that works with Breast Cancer patients I would recommend that. I have other videos on how to treat breast pain and scar tissue.
