BSA A65 bottom end rebuild - timing side bush and journal plans discussed.

- Hopefully, this might be considered a turning point in the story where this engine is concerned, and here I discuss my thoughts relating to the timing side journal and replacement bush.
My father was a Service Manager of a BSA dealership in Ontario Canada many years ago. The repair you are undertaking was a common one on BSA A 65's. Perhaps we have dustier conditions over here but BSA's really had problems with the timing side bush and with valve guides in the head. It should be noted though that the oil's of the day were not as good as what is available today. The other issue we had here with the British motorcycles were the air cleaners. Compared to what the Japanese motorcycles used the BSA's didn't have the protection in the intact's of other manufacturers from Asia. I have enjoyed walking down memory lane with your videos. Well done.

hi Paul the steel backed timing side bush was also made for the dealer ships to do this replacement in house as and when needed, it was none as a plug and play deal so no reaming was needed
the only timing side bush that should be line bored and reamed is the solid bronze ones. the steel backed bushes are far better then the solid bronze ones as the steel backed ones don't flex when under load. keep the vids coming,
This job seems to be coming along well. My only comment would be that the welding job on the bridge piece might be made with both halves of the case bolted together, at least initially, to provide for good registration and distortion control.

That will work if you can get the one thou running clearance on the bush and are confident in the machining and integrity of the bush. As you say the pressed in to steel ones do move if not pegged & I've seen the damage done by that. The care you are taking is the key Paul, measure, check & measure again, and if you're not happy try it a different way! Great stuff!

Is there a firm called SRM that converts them to a needle bearing are they still in business
In New Zealand when rebuilding our engines years ago we were lucky enough to have Dave Rogers to do
a bearing conversion.......what miles should you expect before replacing the bearing you are using here ? cheers Brett

Yes, you can see it has already been removed in this clip. Degrees of difficulty can vary from crank to crank, depending on how carried away the last person there got with the hammer and punch!

Why not ream the T/S Bush as directed rather than skim the crank?

Is it worth regrinding the crank to the next undersize? Thinking about future maintenance here. Will the light skim and std bush give the owner an extra grind when it does eventually wear.
