As a former Duluthian and UMD alumni, all tourists must take the Skyline Drive drive during the summer months (part of the road is closed during the winter/spring). Beautiful views, and Seven Bridges Road on the east side of the drive is absolutely gorgeous!
Agreed on Skyline / Seven Bridges. We used to park at the entrance lot closer to UMD campus to look at the leaves (and maybe burn a few, lol), and of course in just a little bit was where the hawks would hang out. Then all of those random little waterfalls and pools on the river as it passed through the bridges. Another highlight is at that sort of wider area where the Hawk Ridge road connects to the 7 bridges road, there's another road leading away from town - go through a few neighborhoods and you reached a county road that went down into a sort of bowl area. This was the ultimate spot to see the Northern Lights - you were pretty close to campus, but had blocked almost all of the light pollution out. I lucked out and saw some great lights most of the time I was up there, one time we were chilling by Goldfine A at one of the picnic tables out front just watching purples, blues, greens, reds... must have been a massive solar storm.
A nice overall view of Duluth here. Just some minor corrections and additions... 1. It's actually called the Aerial Lift Bridge. The "lift" aspect in the name is important, because that's what it does. Most locals just call it the "Lift Bridge." 2. Canal Park actually is a park. It's the small park by the canal (go figure!) next to the Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center. People sometimes think of canal park as the surrounding area with hotels, shops, and restaurants. But there is indeed a park and that's where people go for ship watching. 3. Ship watching is a BIG part of the Duluth experience. One of the "must see" attractions is watching one of the huge ore carriers come through the canal. Some even exceed 1000 feet in length, longer than the Titanic. 4. In addition to the train rides offered at the Depot, one can also tour the harbor and the lake on the Vista Cruises boat tours, usually lasting 60-120 minutes (depending on the cruise you select). This allows you to travel under the bridge and see Duluth from the lake, which is a highlight. 5. You missed the two main attractions in the Two Harbors area... Gooseberry Falls and Split Rock Lighthouse. Gooseberry Falls is a series of waterfalls within a short walking distance of each other. And Split Rock is considered one of the most picturesque lighthouses on the entire Great Lakes. 6. Glensheen is indeed a well preserved mansion from the 19th Century. Perhaps the most famous (or infamous) aspect of the mansion were the murders that occurred there in 1977. If there ever were murders that imitated an Agatha Christie novel, it was the Glensheen murders. Most of the tour guides don't bring up the murders unless asked about them, and some will refuse to discuss them at all. But they were a fascinating part of Duluth's history that are well worth reading about.
I grew up there and my grandma was a nurse for the Congdon family and was supposed to work the night of the murders, but switched shifts with the woman who actually died. Interesting stuff
Resident here🖐🏻. Grandmas is the best. Onion rings are bomb. The glensheen is amazing, all the amazing waterfalls, split rock light house and you can’t beat Betty’s pies. I totally recommend Black beach
Aaaa, I stayed in a hotel near the lift bridge, forgot what it was called, but when I crossed the bridge, I saw grandma's saloon right there! I never went there sad I missed out.
My mom's people are all from Duluth & north to Hibbing. They're getting quite old, and I want to make one more trip up there to visit all the places I loved as a child, and form new memories. Bonde, do you remember the amusement park on Park Point? We could see it all lit up at night from my grandparents' house on Nashua Street.
I love it in Duluth! Me and my family go there for vacations! And we used to take vacations there when I was little! And the best part about it it’s a 4 Hour Drive away from me!
I live in Minnesota near Minneapolis and I love going up to Duluth. It is a very family friendly city. It can be seen in a day but you also could spend a few days there. There are two ways to get to Duluth either fly or drive from Minneapolis. It is about a two hour drive from Minneapolis. If you are going to drive the route at night it is imperative that you are comfortable with driving through deer country. Typically deer in Minnesota are not a problem on freeways because there are fences surrounding the freeway helping to keep deer out. But since there is a large deer population along the drive to Duluth you should expect to see deer crossing the freeway in the middle of the night. During the day the drive is pretty relaxed. However on Fridays the drive can be slow because of traffic and on Sundays it can be slow coming back to Minneapolis. I have driven the route in the dark numerous times without incident. However, it is much more relaxed to drive during the day. You need to actively watch for deer from Cloquet to Pine City. Also Duluth is a really hilly city. Some people even put chains on their cars in the winter in order to climb the hills. The federal funded roads such as I35, US 53, and US 2 are significantly better routes climbing the hill. If your driving a manual vehicle it can be difficult to not kill the engine when starting at a stoplight on a hill there. Everyone loves going to Grandmas for food. I'll be honest I don't care for it. The restaurant is moldy smelling and the food was average in my opinion at best. Blackwoods is much better but its not amazing. I just go to Texas Roadhouse; it never disappoints. If you want something unique to do I highly recommend visiting the Spirit Mountain adventure park and riding the Timber Twister Alpine Coaster. It is an alpine coaster not an alpine slide. Therefore, the sled is attached to the track and you can travel at an excessive speed. The coaster gives you a great view of the lake and is incredibly unique and scenic. Although you can travel at any speed try to keep up the pace because carts behind you could potentially not see you going slow and hit your cart. It has happened to me. You can always alert the operator that you plan to go slow so they won't send other carts down so quickly. Also watch for deer going down it I had one run right under the track in front of me. The north shore drive is absolutely beautiful and highly recommend. I recommend at least driving to Two Harbors but there are many sites between Two Harbors and Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. Such as Split Rock lighthouse and Gooseberry Falls.
this ^^ especially the parts about: deer = watch out for them when between the Twin Cities and Duluth on I-35 at night Grandma's = tourist trap. Avoid at all costs, unless you watch to see some kitschy antiques plastered on the ceiling and are willing to be bent over for an average-at-best burger for lunch or similar. Spirit Mountain Timber Coaster - if you hit Duluth during the late spring through mid fall, check to see the hours and if it is open. It's well worth the ride, and it's easy to get to - you take the exit at the top of the hill (I-35) near the rest area, and you're almost there. It's really fun!
I grew up in Duluth and I’m currently a server at Grandma’s. Great review. You hit all off the suggestions I give the tourists that come through in the summer.
I used to live there but now we are moving back. I'd say Park point and canal park. Also DEFINITELY go to glensheen it is so beautiful and they give tours of the house+garden
make sure to tour the attic! Yes, the attic. :D It was off limits to tours until pretty recently apparently, but it's astonishing to see. Part of me doesn't want to spoil it, but it's so neat I have to. So from the outside, it looks like some "stately manor". One might think back to old stone construction, and assume such things about Glensheen. Then you see the attic and you realize it was built just like a modern skyscraper is... Lots of steel framework, all really pretty. Roof just attached to the top, as if it was nothing. I guess it shouldn't be that much of a shock after seeing the tour and hearing about how many "modern" things the house had - like wiring and lights in all rooms, central vacuum cleaner system (cute little brass plates on the floor, etc to connect the head to), lots of up to date gear in service quarters, those closets to air out your clothes, etc. It's almost a Disney castle, how you expect so many old things, but for the era it was very ahead of the times.
My family, when we stay here, we watch, and check to see when ships are coming in. We once went to the harbor at like, 11 at night, just to watch a ship come in. To be fair, one of those times it was the Arthur M Anderson, so that was awesome.
I love your videos. They give a great prospective of the world. This past spring, I studied aboard In Europe. I visited France Spain And Italy. I had an unforgettable experience!
My siblings and I were in Duluth this summer for the Tall Ships Duluth. It was our first time in the city but it somehow reminded me of the Bay Area. Drive across the Blatnik Bridge and you'll feel like driving the Bay Bridge to Oakland. 😊
I'm in Duluth right now so thank you for making this. We visited many of these things our first day and will check out the others the next few days. One thing worth mentioning is the incredible terrain here. You will not believe this is the Midwest with the hills, almost mountains items the city is built on. The fjords to the lake are a big part of the beauty. I'm an architect who worked at a firm that does schools and we collaborated with a local firm about 30 years ago. A colleague told me that Duluth is considered the San Francisco the Midwest, though I've not heard it seen anyone say that but as hilly as the city is that visual should give you a feel of what the city is like. Another popular place to mention is Fengers, we had brunch at a breakfast place to enjoy the lake views and will go back to the brewhouse for dinner soon.
There's a spot near Artist's Point, on the peninsula, where the rocks on the shore (East Bay side) are perfectly shaped for skipping. It's also a great place to go just before sunset to get amazing pictures.
The North Shore trail is my absolute favorite area of the world. I live close to the Twin Cities but I'll take day trips on the weekends and vacation time to just enjoy it up there. I love being just north of the main part of Duluth and relaxing at Kitchi Gammi park. There's a rock I sit at and watch the day go by. Beautiful scenery. Wonderful atmosphere. I highly recommend checking the park out if you're into nature and getting away from the busyness of life.
I just visited Duluth for the first time a couple months ago on a whim. Cool town. If you've got an afternoon to spare while there, take a drive up Highway 61 to Split Rock Lighthouse. I'd also recommend checking out the Enger Tower Park overlook. It has a fantastic unobstructed view of the city, Lake Superior, and surrounding areas.
I did the copper work on the carriage house, I fell in love with Duluth and I just might be making a road trip this weekend straight to Duluth... Awesome video thank you
The Rose Garden, Leif Erickson Park, Enger Tower in Duluth are must sees. Up Hwy 61, Gooseberry Falls, Split Rock Lighthouse, Palisade Head, Black Beach, Tettegouche State Park, the lists of beautiful places to visit go on and on.
Went on a road trip from my home state of Mississippi to as far north as Duluth, MN. Specifically wanted to go to Duluth to see Bob Dylan's childhood home. It was in December so we didn't stick around long, but Duluth is such a charming town.
I used to live in St. Cloud Minnesota and often went to Duluth for a weekend or a few days off to get away and be close to a large body of water. It is a nice town, and I had a good time there and found the food to be good as well. I enjoyed the Congden Mansion tours on several occasions and actually got to go all the way up to the attic on one tour.
I went there when my sister was looking at the UMD AKA University of Minnesota and now I'm going there again June 12th and I'm going to be at Canal Park and I'm going to go to Grandma's Grandma's Kitchen is probably the best restaurant I've ever been to and I love that it's right next to the bridge I love Duluth
that's sad that you went there, as to be honest... anybody from there or had grandparents there, went to college there, etc - we almost universally snickered at both Grandma's by the canal and up at the mall. It used to be really good until maybe the 1980s or so, but then they just started ordering most stuff from Sysco and spitting out food basically the same as any chain would give you. We did, however, go to Jeno's (yeah, the pizza roll guy) other places down there - the "Grandma's Sports Garden" used to have a basketball court that was used most of the time as a dance club; some nights for underage, some with beer served. They used to have a great Halloween costume contest - one year somebody came as a damn xenomorph from Aliens! :D It's great that you lucked out and had a good meal there, but for anybody reading this just understand it's a kitschy tourist trap. Maybe go for lunch, but go to Timber Lodge, Pickwick or someplace better for dinner. Personally, I'd go to Deluxe Coney Island before g-ma's, or drive over the bridge to the little hole in the wall in Superior called the Anchor Bar - their burgers come in many varieties but all are fantastic. :D
Using this as a basis to plan my trip here. Thanks for all the information! I definitely want to visit that pie place. As someone being from New Hampshire, I can definitely say I have seen some beautiful views but from this planning, Minnesota and Wisconsin are absolutely beautiful.
the malt shop during the summer is a great place to get wonderful malts. it is located by fitger's, you can take the lake walk and walk up some steps, and come up right next to it.
We live in Bemidji Minnesota and drive over to Duluth a couple times every year. One of our favorite things though, is to drive up north of the city along the Superior North Shore. It's a spectacular drive just by itself, but is dotted with quite a number of state parks all the way up to the Canadian border. Pro tip: If you go in winter all the waterfalls (there are MANY) are all frozen into beautiful sculptures. Last year, when my wife and I went, we saw an otter playing in the open pool under Devils Kettle, it was a magical and quiet moment. You really should come to Minnesota, we love it here for a reason!
I grew up in Duluth and it was a nightmare. The winters like you said, are brutal. I don’t mean to be negative, but the winters make it miserable. The economy is very heavily medical and tourist based, which means that the economy is really pigeonholed. The north is most pretty if you want to do free stuff in nature, as Duluth doesn’t really offer much of anything else; once you’ve seen all the tourist spots there’s not much else. Late September and Early October (if warm enough still) is the best time to visit; the trees become magnificent colors in the fall! Don’t wait too long because summer and fall is short, with long winters and slushy springs.
I was born and raised, also raised my kids over the bridge in Superior Wi. Glensheen Mansion is absolutely beautiful when decorated for Christmas and Bentleyville is also fantastic. Also north of Duluth is Gooseberry Falls. Yes lots of snow but when you live there it's fantastic and you get used to it.
I live an hour north of Duluth. What a great video! What's more, in your few minutes you couldn't squeeze in even half of what's all there to do. Also, a lot of it is very inexpensive by tourist place standards. It's such a great place to visit I'm going there tomorrow.
Hi Marc, I am at home because of a flue, I did a binge watching session the last 5 days since I dicovered your channel. Chapeu for your work. Can not wait to see more. Greetings from Hamburg!
Somebody finally figured out where Duluth was! LOL. I lived in and around the Duluth area for 25 years before I moved to Texas, and I do miss many of the natural beauty that is North eastern Minnesota. Thanks for the video. BTW I notice you folks go to Brazil quite often. Let me know of your next trip. If you get up to Bahia, I have a house in the little town of Itamaraju, and would be happy to have you visit if I am there at the time. Ate depois, tchau.
Also, Weber Music Hall has shows all the time during fall through spring. It is connected to UMD and it's not a bad place to go if you want to see a good show.
Dad was at the Air Base there when I was in 5th & 6th grade. Went there a couple years ago and stayed at the hotel at the base of the bridge where you can watch the boats come in and out of the bay. Yes, winters are brutal but they complain if they don’t get enough snow to do their huge variety of winter stuff. There’s a lot of untapped tourism potential there.
The video leaves out so much! The geography of Duluth is narow and very long, about 15 miles, and sits mostly on a hillside sloping down to Lake Superior. It makes for thrilling bike rides or winter sledding down steep hills. Duluth sits up against an easy to reach countryside with many lakes to enjoy with swimming, waterskiing, fishing, and cabins. Somes lakes are: Island Lake, Pike Lake, Fish Lake, Rice Lake, Caribou Lake. ...A very good place for fishing. Lushious green in the summer. Very colorful in autumn. Lake Superior has a lasting problem with asbestos fiber water pollution from Iron Range mining operation dumping long ago. So the city filters the drinking water.
I love living in this beautiful place my older brother thinks it's so boring but it's such a great and unique place to live and it draws a ton of tourists it's so fun living hear come if can you won't regret it
Chameleon GVA I agree fully with you it is a beautiful city with lots to do I have lived here for 14 years and even I haven’t done everything there is to do and I fully agree with chameleon that you won’t regret it
Duluth certainly is beautiful? Were you guys able to make the trek further to the Canadian border on the gunflint trail? A town called Grand Marais is there with an amazing pizza place called Sven and Oles. The town is amazing with tons of little shops right on the lake. My favorite place to visit!
Did you stop at Fitger's Brewery? We have stayed in the hotel there and enjoyed the shops and restaurants in the complex. It's been several years, but we have great memories.
In Minnesota there is a very cute town near the Twin Cities called Stillwater. If you get a chance you should go there, it's a lot like Duluth. There is so much to do with the family and great antique shops. I'm so lucky to live there!
The Northern Waters Smokehaus in the DeWitt-Seitz Marketplace is a Diners Drive Ins and Dives eatery. Get the Pastrami Mommy. To die for. Also, each year in Jan or Feb is the John Beargrease dogsled races. They start in Duluth and go up the north shore. Spectators are welcome at the staging area, and there are dinners and other activities with this event.
I was surprised how much I enjoyed this one. I've been trying to compile a list of places to see on the Lake Superior shoreline for a roadtrip I'm planning (for 'one day' you know); but you went above&beyond with this one. V enjoyable and informative and great to see Jocelyn looking so at ease in front of the camera (it doesn't have to be perfect hon, ppl just want to hear your perspective).
I could see how moved Jocelyn was with the historical preservation. I know what you mean. I love houses that have been preserved so well. But please, I implore you, don't leave Duluth until you've had a pizza at Sammy's pizza.
There were two families murdered in the glensheen mansion. So its supposed to be haunted . You can also go to enger tower, to get a better view of Duluth. (Stay away from Fond Du Luth Casino) they'll take your money. Don't fall for the people asking for money especially if they say it's for food. There are 3 places that feed those who can't afford food. And shelters, plenty of shelters. If you need a tour guide I'll show you around for free ,cause it gives me something to do . I lived here for 38 years born and raised. But I guess there's always GPS. I have nothing more to add this video pretty much covered everything there is to do here .

One thing I would add is Jay Cooke Park. It's a bit south of Duluth in Carlton, but it's worth adding into a trip.
Thank you, really nice! In Germany you hear and watch lot of the USA but these personel views are really great!
+peter patzig cool to hear. Thanks
peter patzig i live in duluth
nick b Vikings!! ☺
peter patzig Compared to most places in the US Duluth probably conforms to most stereotypes than anywhere else lol

Duluth sounds amazing quaint & clean...my dream!
Don't miss the waterfalls. They're amazing.
Love Duluth.. and missed Duluth so much.. was there as a student at UMD from 1982 to 1987.. love from Malaysia

Highway 61 - made famous in a song by Minnesota native Bob Dylan. Great video as usual!

Thats the one place in minnesota i have never been but would like to visit.heard the fishing is really good up there.
CapeCodBelle thankyou. I'm trying to compile a list of places to see on Lake Superior shoreline
I’ve been their before and I love it. It’s like Duluth 2.00

I'd also recommend checking out the Enger Tower Park overlook. It has a fantastic unobstructed view of the city, Lake Superior, and surrounding areas.
I only ever passed through Duluth twice, going to and from the Boundary Waters. I’d love to explore Duluth one day!
I went to Wisconsin n Michigan from Mississippi didn't go all the way north to Minnesota though
It's great that you lucked out and had a good meal there, but for anybody reading this just understand it's a kitschy tourist trap. :D
It really is a wonderful place!
Like in....the tv show Fargo ?
The northern waters smoke house in the dewitt building is amazing
You just made me reconsider moving to Duluth - maybe the hell that is Texas summers are not that bad.
Duluth is going to be wonderful during the summers!
You certainly made Duluth look and sound very attractive, Wolters. Well done. 👍
+Tosh T thanks TT
I have to say the duluth aquarium is one of the best ones I've went to
I was born and raised, also raised my kids over the bridge in Superior Wi. Glensheen Mansion is absolutely beautiful when decorated for Christmas and Bentleyville is also fantastic. Also north of Duluth is Gooseberry Falls. Yes lots of snow but when you live there it's fantastic and you get used to it.
Not one mention of Enger Tower? That is by far the best place to go!!!!!
especially late at night, when one of your buddies has a "finger cutter" to pop the lock... hahaha ooops.
I live an hour north of Duluth. What a great video! What's more, in your few minutes you couldn't squeeze
in even half of what's all there to do. Also, a lot of it is very inexpensive by tourist place standards. It's such a great place to visit I'm going there tomorrow.
+B Laquisha I know. So much up there. Loved it
From Duluth here!
Thank you for this video! Great information as always :) I feel like you would love Canadian cities (Duluth reminds me of Canada)!
Hi Marc, I am at home because of a flue, I did a binge watching session the last 5 days since I dicovered your channel.
Chapeu for your work. Can not wait to see more.
Greetings from Hamburg!
+sunnysu I hope my videos didn't make you more sick :) hope you are feeling better!
Hahaha ganz im Gegenteil!
This place is beautiful! I live maybe 2 hours south of here and it's a place I like to go with family/friends in the summer.
Because of this video, I’m taking my family there this weekend
The Lake Superior Zoo is also worth a visit
Oh yes I went there great animals!
i like duluth if lived in duluth for 7 years i like it here
Dad was at the Air Base there when I was in 5th & 6th grade.
Tomorrow I'm going to Duluth
Lady Gaia lol funny u abviously deserved it
Madison Jo YOU would laugh, you must be from Dull Youth. Have a good time, soon you'll be spending eternity in the lake of fire.
Lady Gaia umm wtf? im not from Duluth u creep? u r

Lady Gaia lmao rasist 😂 Watch urself
I love this channel especially that you did a video on Duluth!! Definitely subscribed! -18 here I’m Duluth right now brrrr
I love Grandmas
Duluth, all of the "North Shore" drive up Hiway 61 to Grand Portage, and Grand Marais are paradise.
+CapeCodBelle all my pictures from Fitters brewery were crappie so I didn't use them.
wow this guy has talked about the 2 places ive lived in america duluth minesota and tucson az
Did you get any further up highway 61? The North Shore is absolutely amazing and there is a string of great state parks to visit.
Don't forget the races in Proctor !! Never a let down.
Tyson DeVente ayyy! You from proctor? That’s my hometown
Thomas I'm from Thunder Bay, always go down for the races though.
Yeah unless you want hundreds of drug dealers flocking you forget about it
In Minnesota there is a very cute town near the Twin Cities called Stillwater. If you get a chance you should go there, it's a lot like Duluth. There is so much to do with the family and great antique shops. I'm so lucky to live there!
+Maggie Jones we will be back next year so will check it out. Thank you
yeah i go to stillwater and bike a lot there in august.
Hell yeah i love downtown stillwater

The Northern Waters Smokehaus in the DeWitt-Seitz Marketplace is a Diners Drive Ins and Dives eatery. Get the Pastrami Mommy. To die for. Also, each year in Jan or Feb is the John Beargrease dogsled races. They start in Duluth and go up the north shore. Spectators are welcome at the staging area, and there are dinners and other activities with this event.
You guys have me wanting to move to Duluth!
Trust me, you don’t.
Park Point is one of the longest sandbars in the world.

Sammys Pizza Downtown duluth is a must as well!
Actually the bells sound when the bridge is going to go up or is coming down
I was surprised how much I enjoyed this one.
Thank you so much
I could see how moved Jocelyn was with the historical preservation. I know what you mean. I love houses that have been preserved so well. But please, I implore you, don't leave Duluth until you've had a pizza at Sammy's pizza.
+Bill Green thanks Bill. You were not the only one telling us about Sammy's:)
Sammyʻs is really good
That’s something you have to do
There were two families murdered in the glensheen mansion.
And yes it’s beautiful
Is there a place to get some traditional pastys up there?
You and your wife are so cute! Love the pics! #couplegoals
We went there on our honeymoon and stayed at the AG Thomsen house that you pictured!!
Look at that sky y'all got a special place up there
I get to go to Duluth next month
I've heard Minnesota is actually colder than Alaska. Is it?
hittingtax26 last time I checked Duluth was like the 3rd coldest city in the us
Duluth also has lots of lake effect because we’re next to the largest freshwater lake in the world
I Live in Duluth
If you're a train fan, see the train museum, there's a Yellowstone type steam engine there
