⚓️Way over Speed Limit! Ship 'American Mariner' arrives Duluth, MN

  • This is my first video with a brand new view from the top of the south pier in Duluth, MN. I was able to see the 730 ship American Mariner arrive from Lake Superior and watched it pass under the Aerial Lift Bridge. The American Mariner was really speeding coming through the ship canal! Almost 12 knots! Being at the top of the pier gave me the best view of the crew members working on deck!

    I love those horn blast signals. It was great. Thanks for the vids.

    • @vibewithmike
      @vibewithmike  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      There have been a few questions about the boat and bridge signal horns when the boats are entering and leaving the Port of Duluth. In most cases, once radio communication with the bridge has been established, use of the boat and bridge sound signals are not necessary and operation of the sound signals is left up to the captains. Often, boats will not use the loud horns after dark as a courtesy to city residents. So, most often when you hear the customary whistle/horn-blowing sequence of "long-short-short" it is a friendly salute to the Port of Duluth from the ship captain and is responded to by the lift bridge operator with the same sequence. The Master Salute is an upgraded more formal whistle/horn salute. That is “long-long-long-short-short.” While the famous sound may be a courtesy, it has long been part of the nautical tradition of this great inland sea port.

    Sweet ship beautiful day :) What's the difference in a regular salute and a master salute?

    • @vibewithmike
      @vibewithmike  ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I knew that it had to be breaking the speed limit. It was absolutely flying and definitely more than 8 mph. You'd have to be running to keep up with her. Going that fast in a narrow channel was irresponsible.
    The speed limit on UK canals is 4 mph, and on our rivers, it's 6 mph. Although on canals, it's more about protecting the canal banks from erosion.

      @vibewithmike It certainly looked pretty with all of the colours in the sky. With those temperatures, I was expecting to see a lot more ice on the lake and in the channel.
